@stellascriptum kinda plotted. / he thought he'd told her a lie when he sent her off on a lifeboat with a promise he'd make it on the next one. the odds were unlikely, the rich would claim their escape first. yet, somehow he managed to make it onto one with his buddy fabrizzio.

the few months that follow come in a blur. they'd set foot in the streets of new york, gambling their way until they had enough money to get an apartment together and have enough food to keep them going. all the while, jack never stopped looking for rose. everywhere he had gone, he asked for her. his eyes would scan each corner. month after month passed and there had been no sight of her. there was a part of him deep down that wondered if her lifeboat had even made it. (a part that wondered that if she did, maybe she came to her senses and had run off and gotten married after all, rather than choose the life with a nobody.)

and then came the day he stopped looking. a day in which he'd walked the street markets without studying his surroundings, in which he stopped asking if she'd been seen. he had all but accepted defeat by now. choosing to focus on the fruits in baskets and deciding which to buy and take back home. by a stroke of luck, he'd heard a familiar voice. with but a glance, he'd caught a glimpse of the back of a head full of red hair. jack had been prepared to turn back to the baskets of fruits, convinced he was only seeing what he wanted to see. but before he could stop himself, ❝ rose? ❞
