her resolve had shattered the moment she'd been alone with benedict. weeks of yearning, years to be exact, poured into a moment she allowed herself to be lost to. (nevermind the fact they were on the staircase in possible public view.) she'd kissed him – allowed him to touch her in ways that be saved if she had been a lady. but she is no lady… and he certainly hadn't treated her like one when he uttered those damning words. ‘be my mistress’, he had said. the illusion of this being more, of her meaning more to him shatters in equal measure in that of her resolve. the hurt etched into her features as she pulled away from him and sophie scurried down the stairs quickly needed to seek space from him. she maneuvered through the hall and made her way to the servant's entrance when he blocked her way. unable to meet his eyes, her own burned with hot tears unshed.  ❝ what is there to say, mister bridgerton? ❞ her voice devoid the of life she had been full of just moments prior.

most days it's still strange --- isaac gets up in the morning , pulls on his big boy pants , leather jacket and bad boy persona then heads to the institution where he'd formally played the part of invisible nobody. now , he straightens his shoulders , takes up space. erica shoves aside the oblivious outliers and those stupid enough to try and make a stand , and the huff of laughter that escapes him is genuine. there's no pang of sympathy , no one had ever really been in his corner before erica and boyd had come along , both lured into the same pyramid scheme of werewolfy - ness by derek hale ... and if the general population of beacon hills high wasn't scared of her , they deserved what they got. god knows isaac doesn't wanna be on erica's bad side ...

which is , in part , why he takes the tastycake without hesitation. ' 'm not , ' isaac protests , mouth full of stolen sweet. it's a knee - jerk reaction ( defend yourself , defuse the situation , apologize profusely , remember to duck ) muscle memory from his father's abuse. and while he's pretty sure that erica isn't going to punch him or throw a plate at his head , it's a hard habit to kick. no matter how strong he is now , that scared little boy still resides inside him.

he swallows hard , clears his throat of cakey residue and throws an arm around erica's shoulders. ' y'know , mccall has never stolen a tastycake for me , ' he points out , gesturing with the half - eaten snack as if to make his point. ' there's no beating that kind of loyalty. '

maybe she's a little nervous. they went from being betas and having a pack to … whatever they are now. party of three – practically a tight-knit family at this point. although, boyd seems to be getting out there more lately, leaving quite a bit of space for just a party of two. (not that she's complaining.) but with that at the forefront of her mind, what little they had glued together seems to be separating more and more and … the thought of going back to who and what she'd been, alone and rejected, weighs down on erica. isaac could easily join scott and his friends. he's the kind of guy who belongs with a group like that. and if that were to happen, how long before she's entirely left behind?

but that worry is easily diffused the moment his arm comes around her shoulder. her own arm lifts and she instictively hooks her fingertips over his – not quite holding his hand, but grasping on. her head meets the back of his arm as she tilts back enough to glance up at him. she's all smiles and lingering eye contact, perhaps a little too long. ❝ that's because he's too much of a moral compass. ❞ she walks in step with him for a brief moment before playfully bumping her hip into his – and reluctantly pulling away from his side with the action. ❝ play your cards right, and there may be more of where that came from. ❞

final stop for the day: she stands before her locker, spinning the dial of her lock, gaze now kept on the task of retrieving her belongings. ❝ so, uhm – are you spending the night over at his place? or are you coming home for once? ❞ her words oozed of jealousy. (so much for trying to play it cool and not look at him; she failed even with her back to him.)

his  swallow  is  dry  ,  but  his  gaze  is  anything  but.       he  blinks  back  the  stinging  as  he  tries  to  wrestle  between  mind  &*  heart.        he  could  tuck  tail  &*  run  –  he  shouldn't  have  come  to  this  house.       why  had  he  ?       for  the  chance  to  say  goodbye  to  the  memories  here  ,  not  the  hope  that  he'd  see  her.       he  had  no  reason  to  think  she'd  come.      but  she  had  –  unprompted  ;  unplanned.      had  fate  played  a  hand  ?      led  them  both  here  ?       what  a  lovesick  fool.       

such  a  fool  that  he  steps  the  last  bit  of  distance  over  to  her  &*  takes  one  of  her  hands  in  both  of  his.     his  side  aches  ,  earning  a  hiss  of  pain  as  he  stands  on  uneasy  feet.      that  wound  she  inflicted  has  hardly  healed  –  simply  stitched  &*  covered  with  herbs  &*  ointments.      ❛   …  antoine  is  waiting  not  far  from  here.   ❜        with  francis'  allowing  him  to  take  louis  to  navarre  ,  did  he  know  mary  would  go  with  them  ?       sparing  his  life  meant  losing  his  wife.       ❛    if  we  can  get  there  ,  we'll  have  some  sanctuary.    ❜

the silence and distance between them gives cause for her nervousness to spike. she knew what she was risking by being here.  (possible death, likely disappointment.)  and yet she knows now what she wants and can't go back. she'd be living a lie. her heart has belonged to louis for some time now, despite her faults and sins, and she'd rather the final blow be by his own hand than to return to the castle to play queen, to a husband she no longer loves.

the silence between them is so deafening. mary takes to picking nervously at her nails as her hands fold against her midsection. she holds his gaze for as long as she can, hoping he can read her utmost sincerity and take her offer into consideration. brows furrow just slightly and soon, her gaze follows with it. (she's grown afraid of his response – even if she will accept whatever he chooses. be it death, or sent away.) from the corner of her eye, she senses the movement first. just moments from accepting defeat, she now feels her hand held between his and stares up to his face, relief washing through her features almost immediately as a smile cracks through.

her free hand reaches to cup his cheek, concern laces within her expression as she notices the pain within his. (there is no time now, but she'll make up for her transgressions against him.) ❝ will you be able to make it alright? ❞ a moment of concern hits her -- she'll likely have to deal with questions from antoine given all she's done. but even this concern stuffed down in place of her worry over louis. ❝ by horse would be the quickest way, but you're hurt. if we have to walk ... then i can shoulder you. i'll see to it that we make it. ❞

oh – that irritated voice and those stomps up there stairs had been directed at her, huh? she feels like a deerin headlights: eyes wide, lips parted and jaw slightly agape as he finger releases its press against the hair spray nozzle. if this was off limits, why did the guys downstairs insist that she used it?

she snaps back to here and now, a playful grin gracing her features as she sets down the bottle and begins running her hair through freshly hairsprayed tresses, allowing for loose waves, big hair and bangs and patting the rest down where it should go.

❝ uh, like an hour ago – was that yours? i heard it was free game. sorry, babe! ❞  with a final shake of her hair, she feels public ready. hannah's been busy with garrett doing she knows what (and honestly, good for han!), leaving allie to herself. a single pringle with not even her distraction up for distracting her anymore these days. ❝ are you doing anything? say you're free and drinks will be on me. ❞ hands clasp together before her dramatically as he eyes grow wider. pleading. working her charm – whatever people call it. ❝ i'll even fix your 'do. ❞ hands unclasp long enough for allie to grab the bottle once more and give it a little taunting shake.

things escalated from zero to one hundred so quickly, it's a wonder they've managed to ever break out of malone's and find a moment to breathe. she's probably the last person he'd want around at the moment, but she's never been one to shy away too far. in fact, because she feels like she's the cause of tonight's mess is exactly why she lingers. this is on her, she might as well take accountability – and make sure he doesn't go off and do something stupid, like start a round two.

she sits at the end of the coffee table before him, ice wrapped in a towel pressed to his brow. (perhaps a bit too forcefully – actually, it was intentional.) for a moment, she holds onto the silence held between them. allie's eyes remained glued to the parts of him bruised and injured, concern etched in her features. but she does no more than hold the pack to his face, her brows furrowed so deeply that one would have to study her carefully to decipher where one ends and the other begins.

❝ i thought … we had an understanding, ❞ she starts off just above a whisper, but with them being the only two around the guy's living area, she sounds louder than intended. ❝ if i'd just known before everything … ❞ at last, she allows her gaze to find his. sincerity written within hers. ❝ it wouldn't have happened. it really was meaningless. ❞

i have no intention of marrying for love. for benedict or anybody else from bridgerton if you'd prefer tbh!

it's as though a wick has lit aflame. she speaks the words as though they've come straight from his own mind – and he realizes then, they might just be aligned in that regard. love seems a rarity. not all who who wed are as fortunate enought to find what his mother and father had. (their's had been a true and wholesome love.)

he is cursed as the second son: the lesser important son. anthony held the burden of the first son which allowed benedict to gallavant about with the only true concern of his being not to ruin potentials for his younger siblings. he's been discreet about his dalliances, has made it clear all these years he's no intention to wed. but his mother pushes and pushes – his resolve is crumbling before his eyes. he fears he has no choice but to give into his mother's demands. if only she knew the struggles that come with being the second son.

nesta's statement, while rather forward (and a breath of fresh air, really!), has renewed his interest in the prospect. no one will ever fully understand him; perhaps not even accept him for his hidden truths. he sees an opportunity here and offers, ❝ then you should know it isn't love that i seek. i simply wish to adhere to my duty, but i don't see a future of a loving marriage. – you'll be cared for well, money is no issue and you'd have the bridgerton name. ❞ he waits a beat to allow that to sink in. his family holds a lot of weight as far as social standing goes. ❝ we could wed with no expectations other than a marriage in name alone. ❞

crazy how one day you decided to join a hobby in an online space and meet random strangers from all across the country and all around the world just to write and gush about your favorite characters and original creations. crazy how this hobby can range from a short period of time to literally over a decade of your life - and in that time some of those people remain, some you lose and find again years later, some you had to part ways because they were simply a lesson. crazy how some end up transcending the line of being just a writing partner to maybe a life partner, long-term friend, found family. someone you can message with via text, call up on a moment's notice just to hear their voice and chat like you've known them for ages, play video games or share other hobbies, and details of your life with. crazy how this silly little hobby can make a crazy big impact on your life.
