OKAPI Okapia johnstoni ©Laura Quick
Okapi are strange animals that look like a combination of a giraffe and a zebra. They live in the jungle of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it’s very hot and predators, such as leopards, are always lurking. To stay alive, okapi have a three key adaptations.
they have scent-glands on their feet to mark their territory
they have infrasonic calls, which allows them to communicate with their calves without predators hearing their call.
they have 14-18 inch-long tongues, which can be used to wash their eyes and ears.
They are nearly horse sized about 5 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing about 450-750 pounds.

Female Whalefish (Cetomimidae sp.)
Whalefishes are a rare deep-sea fish named for their resemblance to baleen whales. They are characterized by their flabby, scaleless skin and their reduced or vestigial eyes. They exhibit extreme developmental changes and males, females, and juveniles all have drastically different forms, once thought to all be entirely separate species.

Ascending manatee and her baby.
Went to the zoo today and had to share this adorable baby with you guys.
One more video of the baby manatee and I’m done.
I especially enjoy the commentary by the English speaking tourist in the background.

Yesterday I had the fantastic luck to swim with a Dugong in the Red Sea, Egypt. The dugong is a medium-sized marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. The dugong is the only strictly marine herbivorous mammal. The dugong is easily distinguished from the manatees by its fluked, dolphin-like tail, but also possesses a unique skull and teeth. Its snout is sharply downturned, an adaptation for feeding in benthic seagrass communities. The molar teeth are simple and peg-like unlike the more elaborate molar dentition of manatees.
Dugongs are found in warm coastal waters from the western Pacific Ocean to the eastern coast of Africa, they are generally found in warm waters around the coast with large numbers concentrated in wide and shallow protected bays.
