How do people manage to meet without the help of the internet? Go to bars? Go to bars dressed presentably? Go to the mall looking cute? Grocery shopping in something other than pajamas? Honestly, I don’t know. I tried all of those things and then some. I tried going to different bookstores, coffee shops, video game stores, etc., and did I meet a single, like-minded individual? Nope. Then I did something I never thought I would do. I went to Facebook.

I wasn’t looking for the romance of the century. Honest. I was looking for someone to hang out with, someone to grab dinner with on occasion, and/or maybe someone to go see a movie with every now and then. Nothing extravagant. I pulled out my high school yearbook and began searching. Here is where I found quite a few potential male friends. I can’t claim to have known any of them in high school, but I did know of them. And after sending out what seemed like a thousand friend requests (I graduated in a class of 375-ish, so it was probably closer to 12), I sat back and waited to be accepted.

But this time was a little different. Younger me wouldn’t have understood the dedication from Suzanne. She wouldn’t have understood the song lyrics in the song Suzanne wanted to dedicate to George, which means she also wouldn’t have understood what kind of “good times” they shared if the song choice

I've waited literal years since my last written publication--three to be exact.  I've dabbled with photography while waiting for any of my writing to find a home somewhere.  I have received rejection upon rejection; sometimes multiple rejections per day.  Some of those rejections were for this piece.  I'm not sure I can put into words how much it means to me that Drunk Monkeys found some merit in my work.  This is a great lit mag, filled with with some of the most wonderful pop culture writing I've read in a long time, and I'm truly honored to have my writing featured in it.

“Lose weight,” they said. “Exercise,” they said. I’ve steadily lost weight to my high school weight over the last 4 years…then I had a flippin’ heart attack. 😒

Who would have thought that a new pair of headphones and an “in the last decade release” would transport me back to 1989 when lying on my bed listening to NKOTB was best thing eight-year-old me could ever imagine?
