Contrast

There is a line in the article about contrast that says we know a line is long when a shorter line is next to it for comparison. I thought this was a really smart way to open the discussion about contrast; it is a simple but effective way to introduce the concept. I thought it also reminds me of the Josef Albers color study and how colors take on new meaning depending on what colors are next to it.

Matisse

During the podcase on of the guests talked about how he doesn’t know where inspiration comes from. I think he was a painter and he said he tries to think of things to create but ultimately inspiration comes at random and isn’t something you can just will out of existence. I resonate with this a lot because I struggle with being creative a lot and when you are faced with school deadlines it can be overwhelming coming up with ideas.

I found it interesting how Josef Albers talked about the relationship colors have to others versus how they stand on their own. I think this reflects how most people are; we change our personality slightly depending on who we are around and when we are alone we are our true selves.

He said something to the effect of “every color goes with every color if the quantities are right.” I like how he is not stating there is a definite answer to creating art, rather as long as it evokes emotion and makes people respond than you have created art. This is later echoed when he says art can not be taught but can only be understood.
