her powers are definitely kind of similar to five’s. maybe she’s some kind of experiment gone wrong, like an attempt by the commission to mimic five’s ability to jump through time and space without a briefcase? i mean these people quite literally are enabling the apocalypse so morally i’m not sure i would put it past them.

There’s a brief moment in time that he believes she’ll say something nice- maybe compliment his appearance, his skills, his charm, his ability to carry and entire squad ( including her ) on his back to victory. Yet what comes from her lips is not anticipated, quickly wiping the smug look off his face and instead replacing it with a scowl.
“C’mon, that was one time- and I could have sworn you promised never to tell anyone about that or bring it up again.” A lie, obviously, for no doubt she’d use it to humiliate him time and time again. He took could play her little game however, giving her a little nudge and putting on a voice as if speaking to an upset child.

The Wraith was not the first one to ask them this, and thankfully not out of malice, but it remained a question they never quite knew how to explain. How did someone begin to explain what they knew so instinctively? “The same way you seem to know to react to events before they happen. I pay attention, and trust in my senses.”
But that was an oversimplification of the truth. A quick glance to the sky reassured them that Bastard was still flying in circles above them, entirely unworried, and with this momentary lapse in action they decided to try and explain themselves further.
“There’s a lot to be learned. See how one foot consistently leaves deeper tracks than the other? She was favoring that leg, and running.” They point out further down the path, to a messier set of tracks that seemed to step over themselves, and the glint of empty shells in the mud. “She stumbled here, and fired shots before she continued running. I would wager that we are not very far behind her.”
Wraith frowns. She had learned to adapt to her powers out of necessity, and even still her relationship with the Void remains contentious at best. Bloodhound, on the other hand, seems to have a genuine love for their craft. She almost envies it.
Her eyes glaze over the empty shells. In another universe, their plastic was used to make children’s safety scissors.
❝... But if she fired her gun, that means there was someone else. Someone she was fighting.❞ No victories, considering the lack of corpses. ❝Maybe several someones. If she was alone, they probably chased her down. If we try to go after her, too, we might be walking into an ambush.❞

Gunfire cackles overhead like hyena laughter. Wraith finds a bead in the universe. Coaxes it, pulls it open like dough until it gapes wide enough to crawl through.
She grabs Ana by the arm, pulling her towards it. ❝Come on.❞
They’re swallowed whole, quickly flowing through the arteries of reality. Infinite worlds pass them by like projector slides. Megafauna, so ancient they are nameless. Horse and carriage. Armies upon armies. A vast wreckage, something unnatural crawling inside.
They are spit up in seconds behind a Chinese restaurant, half a mile away.

Bloodhound traces a finger around the indent of depressed mud. Size 7. Industrial boots. Small, quick steps. Lifeline, if they had to guess. And she’s alone. The mud’s still soft. She passed through within the last hour, at least. Towards the treeline.
Wraith watches them work with a quiet fascination.
❝How can you know all this?❞
❝It just looks like mud to me.❞

The dome stuck out like a sore thumb, but Wraith couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief inside. It radiated with a warmth that contrasted starkly to the Void’s unyielding cold.
❝Thanks, Gibraltar.❞ Her bangs were plastered to her forehead with sweat. She’s surprised by her own breathlessness.
❝Maybe--maybe we’ll just stay here a minute.❞

They crouch inside the shack, watching the decoy trot out. It glides with a conspicuous ease through the thick swamp water.
❝They’re not noticing it.❞ Or maybe they were, and already figured out it was an illusion. This was, after all, the third one he’d sent out in the past ten minutes.
The illusion saunters on to the nearest cliff and plummets off.
❝Yeah, I think they’ve caught on, Mirage.❞

Wraith wipes her mouth with the back of her hand, shivering against the tin lean-to she’s taken refuge behind. Sweat beads her forehead, stinging with the whiff of toxins her body desperately tried to flush out.
She’d phased out too late, but all it took was a second of contact. She doesn’t even want to imagine how their enemies are fairing right now.
❝You could at least give a warning first.❞
