Steptoes Yard provide stone for large Tennants Auctioneers project
During the early part of 2014 Tennants Auctioneers commissioned an £8m expansion of their Leyburn, North Yorkshire centre, to create new facilities that will support further growth. The project included an extension to the existing auction house and the contract was awarded to Esh Build who are the delivery arm of Esh Construction Ltd; and part of the ESH Group from County Durham. Esh Build deliver quality building projects to a wide range of clients in both the public and private sectors.
The auction business, which was set up over 100 years ago by Edmund Slinger Tennant; operates internationally from its purpose built premises in the Yorkshire Dales and offers 24 specialist departments with 35 full-time staff. The new extension incorporates two multi-purpose sale and function rooms; two brand new restaurants and a selection of display galleries.
Prior to awarding the contract, the architects for the scheme; Langtry Langton from Bradford went in search of a supplier for the large volume of stone and masonry products that would be required for the scheme and to ensure that they could procure the stone from a reliable and plentiful stock, and we were pleased to be on their select list of potential suppliers.
As far as the architects were concerned; it was critically important to guarantee that the stone used in the new development closely matched that of the existing building, and could be found from a source that had sufficient in stock to complete the project. And as the development was within the National Park, the Planning Department were also keen to ensure that the aesthetics of the new building were sympathetic to the surrounding area.
Steptoe’s Yard were delighted to be able to offer a plentiful stock of reclaimed natural stone, which we hand chose for the Tennants scheme and then dressed ahead of delivery to ensure that the masons on site could wall the stone straight away with the minimum of effort. As well as providing the reclaimed walling stone, Steptoe’s were also able to offer a bespoke masonry service for the manufacture of the sawn stone window and door surrounds, and the hand-made arches; copings; columns and quoins.
We are delighted to have been chosen as the stone supplier for this prestigious project and we’re sure that you agree that the finished building looks absolutely superb… it is even difficult to see where the original building ends and the new extension starts, which is credit to the architects for identifying a good quality source in the first place; to ourselves for hand selecting the stone, and to ESH Build for employing good quality bricklayers to piece it all together.
