Grammys 2015 Reflection
Last night's Grammys were definitely eventful. A clear winner for the night would be Sam Smith, who took home four awards and performed his hit song "Stay With Me" with the legendary Mary J. Blige. Here are a few parts I thought I would highlight:
Annie. Lennox.
Annie Lennox blew the roof off the Staples Center last night. I'm not the biggest fan of Hozier and found his performance to be droning and boring, but then came Annie Lennox. Performing her cover of "I Put a Spell On You" from her latest album, Lennox showed that stunts and shirtless men with bull horns aren't needed to remain relevant after the 80's(I'm talking about you, Madonna). Lennox caught everyone's attention with her passionate singing, dancing, and just performance as a whole. She's an electrifying artist who in my opinion, upstaged Hozier and stole the show. To his defense, it's kind of hard to perform with a legend like Annie Lennox.
Barry Stopped By!
Right before Katy Perry's performance (She's had a good week!), Barack Obama appeared on the screen. The President delivered a strong message, calling for the artists in the audience to take a stand against domestic violence towards women and help make their fans do the same. This was an important message for everyone at home and I am so glad this happened. It is so important for these PSAs to be played at major television events, like the Superbowl and Grammys, where millions of people can watch and see how important these issues are. I've seen a lot of news organizations say that this was "inappropriate," because people such as Phil Spector and Chris Brown were in the audience. In my opinion, that's what makes it all the more important. This was a great way to reach artists and fans alike for a good cause. You may not agree with everything our President says, but this was a good move and a good cause!
What the Heck, Beck!?!
So Beck took home Best Rock Album and Album of the Year for his comeback record, Morning Phase. This was a great record that deserved recognition, however, I'm not sold on it being the album of the year. I'm not someone who votes so who cares. However, I saw him at Firefly Music Festival and he was incredible! Sure he isn't the most relevant artist anymore, but that's why this was a COMEBACK record. Congratulations Beck!
Pharrell Williams Performance
Pharrell Williams took the stage to perform his successful track, "Happy." The song won him two awards that night, one for Best Solo Performance and Best Video. At the beginning of the performance, Pharrell and his dancers raised their hands to create the "hands up" gesture that has been a huge part of the #BlackLivesMatter campaign. This was a powerful moment that I hope happens more often. As Barack Obama pointed out in his PSA, it is important for artists to talk about issues and share their opinions to help make a difference.
Sam Smith Wins
Sam Smith took home FOUR awards last night! This was huge for the breakout artist who has won over the hearts of millions. A year ago no one knew who this guy was. However, last night he won 3 of the 4 big awards, Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Sam Smith has had a great year and I look forward to seeing what he does going forward not only with his music, but with his social activism and work trying to change the industry.
