With Steven not knowing what to do with his future, there’s a lot that could be said for where he may end up after the series. I’ve decided to throw my metaphorical hat into the ring and say where I think this epilogue series is going.
I think Steven is going to become a rockstar.
Since I don’t want to flood the tags or anything, I’ll put my reasoning under the cut for if you want to read it!
Steven Universe: Future seems to be setting up for Steven to take on a more “Human” path in life, and distancing himself from the path of his mother, and I believe he might end up taking up a similar path in life to his father, I have a lot of reasons for this, so I’ll list them in (what is hopefully, I could be misremembering) chronological order!
S01E22 Steven and the Stevens: Steven starts a rock band with... himself. The songs he makes were fairly odd, but did end up foreshadowing some certain future events (”I learned to stay true to myself, by watching myself die!”, foreshadowing both the truth behind PD’s “death”, and Steven’s separation in CYM)
S01E48 Story for Steven: We see Greg in his Rockstar prime, rocking his old merchandise and singing “Just a Comet”, a song which fits both Greg and Steven’s characters well. (“Some say I have no direction, that I'm a lightspeed distraction, But that's a kneejerk reaction. Still, this is the final frontier, everything is so clear. To my destiny I steer!”).
Webisode Steven Song Time: Steven writes a song to vent his feelings about his adventures, the war and his mother.
S02E17 Sadie’s Song: Steven showcases his excitement for stage performance by pushing Sadie to perform as Beachapalooza’s “Mystery Guest”, admitting after Sadie’s freak out that “[Sadie] never wanted all of this, It was always [Steven]”. He performs on stage happily and
S05 E09 Sadie Killer: Once again, Steven helps the cool kids perform, but this time allows them much more control of her direction. Sadie shows increasing amounts of exhaustion and frustration at her job, culminating in her quitting her job at the end of the episode and forming her band, Sadie Killer and the Suspects. Greg is involved, as the groups manager.
SUF: Steven is shown growing more and more tired of his life as the gem ambassador, leader, teacher of Little Homeworld, and all his other responsibilities. He’s becoming exhausted and frustrated at his job. He doesn’t know what his future holds or what he’s going to do now things have calmed down. Steven is portrayed in Future wearing a black shirt with a yellow star, exactly the same as his father used to wear, save for the lack of ripped sleeves.
Out of Universe: Zach Callison, Voice actor of Steven, released the album “A Picture Perfect Hollywood Heartbreak“ An Alternative Rock style album, and its really good. He has the r a n g e.
The series as a whole: Steven has gone from Idolising his mother in season one, to tensing up at the mere mention of her in Future. He’s fed up of being compared to her, but throughout all of this, he has never wavered in his love for his father, Greg. I think a nice rounded end to this series long arc would be, instead of being “Chosen” by everyone else to be like his mother, he himself could choose to follow in the footsteps of his father, Greg Universe.
