Gangs With Greek Names
The whole thing started when I saw this kid, Greg, from my Italian class getting bullied by three big hoods in an alleyway as I walked home on Beaumont Avenue after school. I'd just crossed Long Beach Road. To my right, a tall chain-link fence with razor wire atop it bordered the parking lot of an ugly, run-down strip mall. I daydreamed as I strolled along and gazed at the old rusty fence, which was surprisingly beautiful, in a dumb ugly way, when you took a good, close look at it. They had attempted to spruce it up with a layer of silver spray paint, but the rust had continued rusting, as rust will, and as it flaked off, it took the thin veneer of silver with it.
When I reached the end of the fence, I heard someone shout, “Hand it over! Hand it over, or we'll beat ya silly and rip it right off your back!”
I glanced to my right up the alleyway between the rear of the strip mall and the side of a red brick apartment building. Greg stood there with his back to the brick wall. Three menacing hoods in black jeans and black leather biker boots surrounded him.

I slouched across the room and flopped down into a blue beanbag chair. I gazed at the Farrah Fawcett poster on the wall above Greg's bed. I'd made the right choice during my questioning at Hell Night. If I had to pick only one of Charlie's Angels, yeah, she'd be the one. Beside her on the wall were posters featuring Barbie Benton, Brigitte Bardot, and that awesome one of Jacqueline Bisset from the movie The Deep. On the opposite wall, he'd taped a Sylvester Stallone poster from Rocky, and a Bruce Lee poster from Enter the Dragon, and a Tom Laughton poster from Billy Jack, and one of Charles Bronson from Death Wish. It interested me that Greg had arranged the female celebrities of sensual desire on one wall and the male celebrities of righteous anger on the other. All these idols gazed straight ahead out of their respective posters at the viewer. Because they were arranged across from one another, however, they appeared to be taking part in a big group staring contest, the muses of feminine beauty staring down the idols of masculine violence. Where do poems exist? I thought about that and about reading versus listening and writing for the page versus writing for the stage while simultaneously reading and listening to poems by Stephen Roxborough. Fourteen poems on his fine new cd, Poetica Dystopia, also appear in his book, I Feel You
