The Heroic Age of Polar Expedition had many contenders seeking to be the first to reach the South Pole. Robert F Scott and Roald Amundsen were the two noted people who took the epic task of reaching the End of the Earth. Both used different tactics to reach this place and proved some facts about how an expedition project should be handled.

There is definitely, a lesson to be learned from the experiences of the explorers, which is still valid even today. The explorers Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen had some experience working under hard and cold terrain in their respective previous projects. So they made their decision based on the fact that they had collected from their own experiences and those of their fellow polar explorers. The exploration to the South Pole may seem daunting to any adventure seekers much like the PMP Application, but yet, both the teams set out to reach their destination at any cost, which could be the inspiration for any new challenge.

The available terrain information was minimal and most of the challenges lay in the facing of change in weather condition and terrain-based difficulties. There is a marked difference in the way Robert Scott handled them and how Roald Amundsen handled them. Robert Scott made plans based on the go and didn’t have a game plan while Roald Amundsen planned his expedition as close to terrain requirements.

So when there were hiccups in the expedition each of them used their own style for solving the issues. Their choice of solving proved to be harm to one and a joy to another. Scott gambled on the untested transportation technology in Motor sledges. He chose to take along ponies which were not selected without the complete knowledge of their endurance quality. In Amundsen case, he chose to rely for the transportation on good breed of dogs, skis and good animal skin coats for the harsh Antarctica cold weather. He made good time with his dog-sledges and warm cover which enabled the team to concentrate their effort on the trek to the South Pole. The plan that Amundsen had drawn using his previous project experience gave him the insight to take the right decision along his challenging trek.

Amundsen and team along with his dogs reached the South Pole in December 1911 leaving Robert Scott trailing behind. Scott and team were discouraged after noting that Amundsen team had already planted the Norwegian flag in the South Pole. The team were so dispirited that their trek back to the “One Ton Depot” became all the more difficult. Scott and his small team of men died 11 km from “One Ton Depot” suffering from frostbites and hypothermia and never made it home. Once again proving that an ill-planned project is usually is headed for failure.

Amundsen’s plan about the right choice of men, resources like transportation equipment, dogs, and good cold protection had ensured that he brought back his men safely to the land.
