Hannah is two years old today
Niece of mine, you have been an absolute joy. Everyone has their bad days but I honestly can't remember any of yours. Happy Hannah, Hannah Banana, thank you for putting up with us and smiling almost all of the time. You're lovely. In four or five days, baby girl, your whole Winnipeg family is going to descend upon you and then there's going to be one heck of an elmo-themed party. I hope you're ready for what two years old will bring. I hope you're ready for Adam, he's been growing again. I hope that in the coming year you continue to throw smiles at us as fast as we can catch them, and do things just a little ahead of Adam so that I can figure out what's coming and how to deal with it. Happy birthday, banana, love Auntie
Adam is 23 months old today
Time flies when you're raising babies, kid. Soon you will be two. Let's all let out a big Keanu-Reeves style "whoa." Whoa. A year ago around this time I went back to work, and thinking about you a year ago is a great pastime of mine. Come to think about it, thinking about you any time is sort of my thing. But a year ago, you didn't walk, and you didn't talk, and you were what, a good six inches shorter? You've accomplished a lot, buddy. When you started daycare for the first time you crawled away from me with no fear and off towards your own independent life, and with the exception of a few rough days here and there you've continued to go and thrive. It never stops amazing us when you come home knowing things that we haven't taught you. Like the abc song, and how to count to 10, and of course plenty of French niceties (please, never stop saying "Merci beaucoup mommy"). Every stage of yours is my favourite yet. I imagine that when you're potty trained I'll be over the moon and ready to just stick you in a jar so you stay that way. Adorable and small but no longer pooping your pants? Sign me up. Whatever the future brings, you have to know how much your dad and I love you. Don't let it go to your head or anything, but yeah. We play favourites and you're our favourite. There's not much I wouldn't do to keep you happy, healthy, and astounding me with your ever expanding knowledge. When we catch up in a month's time here, I expect you to be capable of book reports. Love mom
Where the weekend took me
Many thanks to Courtenay for being an awesome photographer, a patient and hospitable host, an awesome cook, and a beautiful pregnant lady.

Adam was stung by a wasp today. He cried in my arms, every so often stopping to say "mean bug!" Then he fell asleep for about half an hour in my lap. This meant that after lunch and after the sting seemed to stop hurting, he wasn't sleepy and he didn't really care for our ideas about cribs and napping. But he did spend the afternoon very quietly, and for a good half hour he sat in this corner looking at all his books. My heart.

Daddy is camping all weekend and the weather is only so so, so we are watching the lion king and rocking the couch cuddle.
Kristyn is 28 years old
It could be worse, folks. I'm not as famous as I thought I'd be but things are pretty alright just the same.
Adam is 22 months old
The latest milestone for you, little boy, is I have stopped giving your age in months. When someone asks, and they often do, how old you are I now say that you'll be two in October. Welcome to the rest of your life, rounding up or down your age to make a whole number. You didn't think the months thing would last forever did you? The fact is, that while you still change incredibly fast and "two years old" only kinda sorta sums you up developmentally, we have run out of fingers and toes with which to calculate your month age and that seems as good a time as any to simplify. Believe me, we're already brainstorming about the second birthday party. I think this time around you might understand how presents go. Things you're up to this month include: speaking more and more English every day and even telling us things we might not otherwise have known, like there's a rock in your shoe or you love grandma; drinking from a cup without a lid or spout; and OH WAIT HOLY SHIT SWIMMING BY YOURSELF. Kid, we put your life jacket on and throw you in the pool. Please, when CFS gets wind of it, tell them we're standing by the whole time, ready to launch ourselves at you if you so much as get a swimmer's booger. But you don't want us! You dog paddle around so happy and so pleased with yourself that it's pretty hard to get in your way. So congratulations kid, 22 months is when you officially became a better swimmer than your mom. I say this all the time, but you really do get more and more fun with every day. You're interactive and funny and surprising, and sometimes I see little babies and I croon just a little thinking about how small you once were, but mostly I'm glad to have gotten through what I now consider the dark newborn days and emerged out the other side with such an awesome toddler. I look forward to whatever comes next kid. Talk to you soon.

Cosleepin'
Last night Adam kept crying out and then crying some more. No amount of cuddling seemed to be enough. So for the first time since he was about three days old, I took him back to bed with me. And it was nice. We have our thought-out reasons for not having a family bed and cosleeping and all, and those reasons still stand, but it was pretty adorable to get to hang out and listen to him suck his thumb at three in the morning. And it's good to know that not only did he sleep, he slept IN (for him). It can't hurt once in a while, can it?
Adam was 21 months old the other day
Okay kid, you're on to me. I know you're on to me because you've gained enough capacity for language to tell me you're on to me, and then quote some Thomas Pynchon. You're on to he fact that I missed the 20 month post altogether and now I'm a good three days late on the 21 month. Mea culpa, little boy. I'm only glad you still can't read, write, or notify CFS. Life gets in the way but you should never doubt the influence you have in our lives. In the last few days your father and I have forsaken all other forms of communication except for staring at each other in amazement and saying "DID YOU HEAR THAT?" You have tried every word we can throw at you - I really need to stop swearing now - and you've started using phrases like "I got you!" and "it's Bruce!" You've also taken on a tone I thought I wouldn't be on the receiving end of for at least a couple more years, it's in the way you say "I kno-ow" like you're rolling your eyes every time we tell you something that's clearly yesterday's news. There's a lot of pressure to impress around here, I can tell you. What else are you up to? Only showing us your muscles, learning to swim, and demanding cookies from grandma. To say nothing of your continued love of trucks (last I checked we owned about 50) and your constant practicing for a future in eating competitions. How many blueberries can one 30-pound child eat? You're here to find out. One more big thing, and when a kid hates getting his diaper changed as much as you do, it's pretty damn big: you've started telling us when you poop and sometimes when you pee. I've got a potty training book and a potty, I'm ready when you are. You're growing up fast, kid. As always I'm just running as fast as I can behind you, doing my best to chronicle every now and then. I'll check up with you soon, I expect you'll be ready for med school by this time next month. Love mom
One more
Say hello to my third niecephew! So far all we know about him/her is that he/she has a heart rate of 143, and is a mighty 3.5 inches long. We're all doing our best to convince kaylin and Jared to find out the gender (because auntie hates surprises) so stay tuned for the next ultrasound in about two months, when hopefully genitals will reveal themselves.
I don't always steal photos from my sister
But when I do, it's because it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
long time no blog
no guilt trips, here. I've had a busy month of adjusting to the new job (it's going great, thanks) and adjusting to everything else around it. some things about life are easier, like getting to see adam every single evening. some things about life are a LOT harder like, when do normal-job people go for groceries? when do they run every stupid errand ever? bear with me, I'm a little spoiled, but it's taking me FOREVER to finish a book all of a sudden. I blew right through the deadline for the 20-month post, but believe me he still turned 20 months old. for a few days I thought to myself "oh tonight, tonight it'll get written." but here we are creeping up on way-too-late-why-bother, so I promise to make a big deal out of 21 months, 'kay? the ways in which I know this boy is growing up are many and terrifying. he's saying, on average, about one new word a day. he's game to try whatever you want to throw at him, but this weekend his favorite is "big truck" - perfect for a seven hour drive to regina because BELIEVE ME HE POINTED OUT ALL OF THE BIG TRUCKS. he's also finding new ways to let us know that the world outside our home has influenced him. as a small example, we don't watch dora in this house. why is she yelling? and does she really think the kids at home are answering her questions and screaming backpack? give us some credit, you poorly supervised child. but then we got to brielle and hannah's house where (surprise!) there are a LOT of pink things including a couple featuring that football-shaped bobcut head, and adam walked right up to one, pointed at it, and said "dowa!" where has he encountered dora? which daycare has been showing it to him? they both claimed to not show a lot of TV but hey, so do we. no hard feelings. all I know is we got home today and I put dora on for him, and he shouted BACKPACK at the television, right on cue. speaking of hannah and brielle and long-assed road trips, I just got back from regina and HOLY CRAP my parenting muscles are tired. family vacations (this is what we take, now, doug and adam and I, WHEE) are exhausting marathons. given the time difference, I had to struggle every night to stay up until at least the girls had gone to bed. it doesn't help that adam is still, 20 months running, the earliest waking baby I know. but hannah and brielle? greatest nieces I know. brielle is fascinating and scary smart (we had a long conversation about her elmo doll eating my fingers), and hannah is so sweet I want to dunk her in my coffee. another big highlight? uncle jared is a firefighter. when you are a little boy who absolutely loves BIG TRUCKS (have you heard?) and your uncle is a firefighter and gets to work with BIG TRUCKS, well... it's not too hard to make your canada day. wow. adam got to run around the big trucks, and touch the big trucks, and get in the big trucks, and nearly fall out of the big trucks (good reflexes, uncle) and then just for good measure he got to play with a fire hose. and I felt so happy, like I'd taken him to disney world. I suddenly understood my dad's tendency to go out shopping on christmas eve every single year, to make sure he hasn't missed that one gift we were really hoping for, just for that look on our faces on christmas morning. I want to give adam gifts that ALWAYS make him look as wide-eyed as he did at the fire hall. I could eat and drink that joy and never want anything else. so what I'm saying is, thank you auntie and uncle for everything you did for us this weekend. we appreciate your hospitality, your food and drink and entertainment. thank you for letting us cuddle and love your children. and from adam, thank you so much for fire trucks. in other news that will eventually involve babies but doesn't quite yet, I'm happy to report that my sister is glowing, GLOWING, at three months pregnant with baby the third. just because I think she's crazy, doesn't mean I'm not totally ecstatic about a new niece or nephew to play with. I'm already thinking of names (kristyn? kristyn?) and speculating on the gender (and if it's a boy, I've got about fifty boxes of clothing to send to saskatchewan). my own self remains wise to this whole baby thing. I've got my hands full with the most awesome kid who ever crapped in the bathtub two nights in a row. people like to ask when he's going to become a big brother, and there's nothing I can do about that, but some day I'll hit menopause and maybe it'll stop. maybe. he's an awesome cousin, for what it's worth. only very occasionally stealing their toys and teaching them bad habits and eating all of their food (kaylin, I warned you). I love watching these kids grow up and interact with each other, I hope to some day sit them down and show them all the pictures of them smooching and thus earn a whole lot of teenage eye rolls. so thank you, thank you, kaylin and jared, for letting us hang out with your children. so this is the awesomeness of long weekends now that they actually exist for me. I'm still adjusting to not needing to check my schedule when someone asks what I'm doing the next holiday. I'm off! I'm always off! no shift swaps, no overtime, no vacation hours to be used up. I don't work. let's go to the beach or something.
