i know this is an unpopular opinion but like,,,, the “im a lesbian and you can too!” mindset honestly helped me so so much in with feeling comfortable going from calling myself straight to calling myself bi to actually calling myself a lesbian. Theres definitely something to be said for the fact that there are women who want to be lesbians. 

men make me nervous, and angry, and even tho its hard for me to parse through past emotions and figure out whether my minimal crushes on boys were compulsory heterosexuality or if i was genuinely attracted to them, i do know that i love women. 

imagining spending the rest of my life with a wonderful woman i love who loves me too is something that gives me reason to want for a future where im a wife and a parent…. something i know i did not want for when i thought that type of future would inevitably involve a husband, and i know this is a common lesbian experience. 

the thing about “im a lesbian and you can too!” is that like. if you exclusively want to pursue women, be pursued by women, have relationships with women, etc. and dont want to do those things when they involve men regardless of whether you are genuinely attracted to men or not (and even regardless of whether you know whether or not the attraction is genuine) then YES, you definitely should be able to call yourself a lesbian. 

obviously, if you realize you want to and start acting on attraction to men then more power to you and you should switch to a label thats not about exclusive attraction to women, however what I’ve found with a lot of ‘im a lesbian and you can too!” lesbians is that we tend to come to the conclusion that our attraction to men is/was very not genuine and we are indeed exclusively attracted to women. 

which is the whole point of lesbianism! which is why this mindset works! if you prioritize your attraction to women and want to be exclusively attracted to them then yeah you should feel comfortable using a label thats entirely about being exclusively attracted to women especially because you may find that you dont just want to be a lesbian, you are a lesbian.

(Disclaimer: uh btw this is definitely not to say bi women are secret lesbians, if you identify as bisexual then yeah absolutely you’re bi, the point of this post is to say that a common lesbian experience is thinking youre bi/straight/attracted to men in any capacity but wishing you weren’t)
