Late Night Phone Call
The god looked down at his hands, wondering if he should invite him over or meet him somewhere. He was tired, exhausted, but he couldnât bring himself to go back to sleep. â⊠Could- could you come overâŠ? We could go to a diner down the street from here- if youâd like.â He felt odd. Inviting someone to his home wasnât something he normally did. It was his domain, his little slice of space, somewhere he could just be who he was without worrying about what might happen. Sure he couldnât cast certain types of magic, but he didnât have to fix himself up in such a way that made him look like âHoltâ.
"I could text you my address." Steve was a really nice guy, and he felt bad for not trusting him completely, because here he was now in a position where it would have been nice for the other to know his address.
Come over?
Steve mulled over the request in his mind. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it, initially, and you just couldn't fake Loki's current state of distress.
Two things came to mind: 1) Loki was distressed. 2) Steve personally felt he should be a whole lot more suspicious than he was. Sure, Steve didn't completely trust Loki, either, but situations like this were classic red flashing signs for trouble. Yet, Steve's intuition kept telling him otherwise.
"Sure. That would be fine. Unless you would rather come to my apartment? I know you appreciate your privacy. Otherwise, you can text me the address right now and I'll be there right quick."
The soldier was already up so he could change into some fresh clothing while he waited for Loki's reply. He put the phone on speaker and pulled on a tee shirt over his tank top.
And then he thought of something; "We can stay on the line until we meet."
An Unusual Meeting in the Park
Loki sipped his milkshake in silence, trying not to think about those things. He didnât want to, but now that Steve had brought it all up- he kind of had to. â⊠Well⊠I donât know. I guess Iâll cross that bridge when I come to it.â He looked up at Steve. The trickster really didnât know what heâd end up doing in the end⊠Heâd probably run first, try to find someplace to hide, someplace to slip away between the cracksâŠ
As for SHIELD⊠He knew they would find him eventually. His face was too recognizable not to be found out⊠âThank you for making a file for me- I appreciate itâŠâ He really did, even if it made him nervous.
Careful, observing eyes kept their attention on Loki, and Steve slowly nodded his head when the trickster finally answered.
Then he went back to scanning his short list of things. He'd make a more appropriate dossier when he made it back to his own apartment. Still, some things kept floating around in his mind. Part of him was worried about Thor finding Loki, too. Mostly because after seeing Loki today, he didn't want to think of the other being dragged back to Asgard. Thor seemed like a good guy and a steady battle ally, but when it came down to it Steve didn't know him or Asgardian culture. Steve looked up when he heard the reply of gratitude.
A half-smile tugged on the corner of his lip; "I'm just sorry it made you uncomfortable." Well, he was and he wasn't. Loki had brought discomfort down on a lot of people, but Steve was a fair person and Loki was genuinely remorseful. The Captain had an eye for that sort of thing. "I don't like these file things, either. It really shouldn't be SHIELD's business, especially when people don't want it."
Taking the paper, he folded it up and put it into the breast pocket of his shirt. He hoped it wouldn't get wet when they left.
"That's it. I won't ask you anything more, but I will keep this updated as we continue meeting up." Steve looked at Loki one more time; "Thank you. For cooperating, I mean. It'll mean a lot in the long run."
Ultimately, Steve realized that it was his job to protect people from SHIELD, even though there should have been nothing to protect them from in the first place.

Tony's hands slid easily along the holo-keyboard; "Hey, you know, this tumblr theme thing is pretty awesome. You know we can replace those boring quote brackets with symbols?"
"Mhmm."
"What do you think about little iron man helmets?"
"How very vain of you, dear."
"Pepper's bra?"
"Tony."
"What do you think about dollar signs?"
Steve's laugh slipped out, then he composed himself with a smirk as the only indication he had been amused; "Tony."
The mechanic grinned.
"How about a crown? It's simple."
"Nah. Neither of us are royalty."
"I'm technically a prince."
"Uh-huh. Since when?"
"... You know what, screw you, Rogers. I'm putting whatever I want." It was then that Tony thought of Pepper seeing the bra images and he revised his sentence; "Whatever I want that won't get me dead."
Steve knowingly grinned, then he glanced over Tony's shoulder and got a better look at the blog;
"Stony? Really Tony? It's not funny."
"Yes. It is."
"No, it's not. You just love egging on controversy, don't you?"
"Why, honey. I thought you figured out a long time ago that that was the sole reason I'm in a relationship with you," Tony pat Steve's cheek with a huge grin on his face.
The super soldier couldn't beat off his own grin, his eyes reflexively rolling.
Late Night Phone Call
Loki frowned a bit then looked down at the floor as he swung his legs over the edge and ran a hand through his hair again. â⊠Yeah⊠ I didnât want to bother you was all, this is not something I usually share with others. I havenât been able to sleep without having a nightmare since I last game to MidgarâŠâ Since heâd been tortured and subjugated by The Other and- âItâs just been getting worseâŠâ He gripped his phone tightly.
"Iâm loosing what little sanity I have leftâŠ" Heâd been working on it thanks to Bruce, but some simple breathing exercises and not drinking caffeine after a certain time only got you so far. Meditation heâd been doing daily for most of his life. "I am sorry, I am probably such a bore-"
"No!" His tone was almost urgent, so he paused to calm himself; "No. Don't.. You aren't. I'm glad you told me."
Although, Steve wasn't rightly sure what to do. He chewed on his lip. Back in the 40s, it wasn't unusual for soldiers to go for weeks on end suffering from nightmares. These days they called it PTSD, he guessed.
"It's true that I've been around a lot of people who suffered from nightmares, but it's never a bore. It's not unimportant, either. And the last thing either of us want is for you to lose your sanity, anyway." Back then, they just dealt with it as it came and somehow managed through, but again.. times had changed, so the captain asked; "How can I help? Did you want to keep talking about it or meet up somewhere? I mean, if you're looking for a distraction, I'm in a similar boat..." Steve scratched behind his head.
An Unusual Meeting in the Park
The trickster sort of smiled at Tonyâs observation that he wasnât happy he did not paint any longer. He supposed he was a little disappointed, but he supposed it was just one of those things that he just thought he could do without. It was just one more thing to worry over, stress over. Thankfully, with paint you can always cover up your mistakes.
"I suppose I should." He nods a bit, then looked up at the waitress as she came over with Steveâs plate, thanking her before she went off to take care of the others. He was uncertain as to what he should say now. The air was not necessarily tense, just, exhausted he felt. What should they even talk about now?
Loki looked down to his milkshake before taking another little sip, closing his eyes as he enjoyed the taste and coolness of the drink. He tried to think of something, something to say that would not let things fall into an uneasy silence between them.
"Thank you for the drink." He said finally. What kind of topic was what?
Before the fork full of dessert met his lips, Steve stopped. His eyes shifted upwards to view Loki, his lips parted and hovering over the food. He straightened his spine a little better then replied;
"You're welcome, L- Holt. I know this isn't usual." He gestured between them. "It's probably a pain in your ass, too, having ran into me in the park like that. I do apologize for ruining your day." The lines on his face returned; "But you don't know SHIELD as well as I do. If they find you, and they will, there needs to be some sort of report." Frankly, something just wasn't koscher about the organization, although Steve couldn't put his finger on it. It'd reveal itself with time.
Thunder softly clapped outside which drew Steve's attention; "I don't want to keep you much longer, because it might get bad out there soon. But.. I've been curious this entire time about something." His sky blue eyes shifted again to meet Loki's, their expression soft; "I know you probably worry about this enough, but what are you doing to do when Thor finally finds you? Not that I'll be the one to tell him."
Late Night Phone Call
Loki nodded as he listened to the other, trying to reassure himself that this wasnât a mistake, that he needed to talk to someone instead of let everything turn in on himself. âThings have been alright, betterâŠâ That was true, but still, he was having trouble from now and then. âOh, yes⊠I have been painting. I bought some paints a few days ago and some nice brushes.â He felt strange about having such a simple conversation with the man, but he didnât really know what else to do.
âI⊠I am sorry- again- about calling. I just-â He what? â⊠I needed someone to talk to was allâŠâ Best to be truthful in this situation.
He gave a soft sigh and ran his hands through his hair. âI havenât been sleeping very well for a while, and tonight I guess it just got to me and, wellâŠâ He fell silent.
"Hey, that's great," he replied when Loki said he had purchased some paints and brushes. Perhaps the goofy grin on his face reflected in the tone of his voice. He was going to ask if Loki could like to bring his paintings to their next meeting, unless they meet somewhere other than the diner.
Softly smiling, Steve had just decided to go get a weight when he stopped. The captain sat down on the top step, completely focused on the person on the other side of the phone now. "It's alright. If you want to talk about it, that would be fine. Might help you feel better and sleep easier. You won't keep me up. I've already stayed up too long on my own tonight for that anyway."
An Unusual Meeting in the Park
He smiled and then looked down at his hands. âI have not had the passion to do as such for quite some time I am afraid.â The god smiled again, but didnât seem to happy about that. He enjoyed painting when he was younger, but now it just seemed like a useless skill and hobby. Like playing an instrument⊠Music was more of his passion though, but he did not have any such thing to play.
âIf I still had some of my paintings I would have shown you, but I am afraid that they are all back in Asgard in my bedchamber.â Which probably was filled with dust by nowâŠ
âPerhaps one day I will paint again, and if so I do not see why I would not show you, considering you are an artist.â
Steve found himself wondering if Loki missed it back on Asgard. Though, he figured it was about like how he himself missed being in the forties: Miss some things and wish you could forget others.
"That would be great," he spoke honestly and with a soft smile. "You should, because you don't seem to happy that you don't anymore." He laughed softly. Steve was just..kind of feeling good right now, for some strange reason. "It's a nice recreational thing, I think. You can make a small amount of money from it too if you find people who are willing to buy. The internet is a good terminal for that these days, at least. If you do start again, you should show me what you paint. And I can show you some of my sketches, if you're at all interested."
The waitress rolled by with a "Sorry to interrupt you boys" and a soft smile. She sat Steve's plate down in front of him along with the check, then skimmed away to new customers.
Late Night Phone Call
Oh, well that was good at least. He hadnât woken the man up. He still felt a little bad though, like heâd bothered the man, like he shouldnât have called and interrupted him.
At Steveâs question, he tensed. âYes- everything is alright-â He noticed how quickly heâd answered that and decided to try and sound a bit more certain of his answer. âIâm alright, I just-â just what?
He brought a and to his face and let it slide down before falling into his lap. âI am alright⊠I suppose I just wanted to give you a call and talk?â He sounded a little uncertain again. âI could not sleep, and we have not talked in quite some timeâŠâ
The swift answer didn't get past Steve, and he listened while Loki stumbled to find words. As he did, Steve sat on his desk. Yeah, the first sign someone isn't okay is when they stress that they are a lot.
Pausing momentarily, he froze. "Oh, yeah. We haven't. We need to schedule another meet up. I'm sorry for kind of...yeah." Steve sighed.
Actually, the days had started to meld together again. The soldier let himself be lost in the endless, timeless loop. This was getting bad. He was starting to leave everyone out of his life again, fall back into that void.
He shook his head and tried to focus. "How have things been?" the Captain smiled a bit into the phone. "Did you pick up painting again or gone anywhere lately?"
Meanwhile, Steve looked around. His body needed physical stimulus of some sort. Drawing would only lead him into an unfocused daze, which was the last thing he wanted. Steve enjoyed talking to Loki. But his body needed to keep busy.
An Unusual Meeting in the Park
The god listened to what Steve said, glad to see that Steve wasnât looking so solemn anymore. At least he seemed to brighten up when he mentioned art, smiling at the story of when he was a child. For some reason, it just seemed out of place for him to see the man like that, so deep in thought, out of place, lostâŠ
It had bothered him.
âWell, the buildings and architecture is much different from here on Midgar, then again, so is our technology⊠For instances, the Tesseract⊠I cannot say for certain, but I have heard that Odin was using itâs power to rebuild the bifrost, that way the bridges between worlds can be open once more without using as much power.â he had just barely made it to Midgar on his own.
âPerhaps one day I can show you some pieces of Asgardian art and architecture, though I suppose Thor would be a better choice since he could actually bring something back to show you⊠I would say simply provide him with a camera, but he would certainly break it without meaning to. Sometimes he does not realize his own strength.â He couldnât help but smile at that, remembering on a few occasions when Thor had accidentally broken something.
âI once painted, yes, but it has been a long time sinceâŠâ He enjoyed painting more abstract things though, nothing defined.
The Tesseract.
The mention of that made his jaw slightly clench. In a way, he took some of the blame for everything that happened. After all, he was the reason that Howard found the thing. Another reason for him not feeling right about being out of his time. But he shook it off, attempting to keep his focus on art.
Steve continued to eat while listening. He soon finished his plate, and soon an actual smile was brightening his face. The captain almost laughed when Loki mentioned Thor possibly breaking the camera. And when all was said, Steve leaned back, resting his arm along the booth headrest.
He nodded, "Actually, that sounds like a good idea, if it's not possible go myself one day. If they do use the Tesseract to set up passage between the worlds, that should also mean quick, efficient travel," Steve lightly scratched at the hair on his jaw. He had witnessed twice how fast the Tesseract transfers organisms. Though, he supposed he shouldn't assume humans could physically take the ride. "Hopefully I'll get the honor of visiting Asgard sometime."  His smile was warmer now, muscles relaxed. "Why not start painting again? Or did you lose the inspiration?"
Late Night Phone Call
Loki could hear the other on the other side of the phone, emerald eyes staring down at the device in hand, hesitant to bring it back to his ear. There was a long pause, waiting for a few moments before finally he decided to bring it to his ear.
â⊠Hey-â He said, feeling a little strange for just saying something so simple. He wondered if heâd possibly woken the other up, but that did not seem likely with how he sounded on the other end. âI am sorry, am I interrupting? I did not mean to do so- I just-â He just what? He was babbling on nowâŠ
He felt so stupid for calling, but then again, it had seemed like a good idea at the time, just like all the other bad Ideas that heâd had before in the past.
"Hello?" Steve hesitantly asked again.
Maybe it was the wrong number? he thought until he heard a familiar voice. Quietly processing that Loki had just called him at 4am in the morning, and also very surprised, he patiently waited for the other to finish speaking.
"Uhh, no. I was just," Drawing you, so this isn't an odd coincidence at all. Shit, does this make me a stalker? Note: Use Google to look up the exact definition.
"-drawing." At that moment, he felt an irrational paranoia, so he lightly pranced back upstairs to close his notebook. It's not like Loki was there to see. Okay, it was possible that he might just pop up, but Steve didn't think he would, anyway. "Nothing that can't be put off. What's going on? Are you alright?"
Late Night Phone Call
Loki suddenly jolted awake, hands fisting white sheets, trembling. He stared, wide eyed across the room, then raised a hand and covered his mouth before screwing his eyes shut, stifling a small sound. He hadnât had one like that in a while now. He wasnât certain what had caused this nightmare, but it had seemed so real so vivid. A tear ran down his cheek as he tried to calm himself, assure himself that it had just been a nightmare, nothing moreâŠ
Heâd been practicing some of the techniques that Doctor Banner had told him to try out when they had last spoken. Theyâd worked fairly well for a while now, allowing him a bit more of a restful sleep for the past few weeks.
He swallowed a lump in his throat, then reached over for his cell phone, hand still trembling. He looked through what few numbers he had in it till he came across Steveâs, and paused. His thumb hovered over the âCallâ button for what felt like an eternity before finally pressing the button and bringing the phone to his ear to listen. He felt kind of bad for calling at such a late time, heâd seen on his phone that it was 3:41 AMâŠ
It rang once- IÂ shouldnât be bothering him-Â twice- maybe I should hang up-Â a third time- he probably wonât even pick up-Â a fourth-
He pulled the phone away from his ear getting ready to hang up before he heard him pick up.
Only the occasional, soft scratching of pencil marks filled the much too silent air. Steve didn't feel like listening to music. He couldn't sleep, hadn't for a couple of days.
At first, the sketching had just been an exercise to relax him, though as he continued to draw, the Captain seemed to go into a trance. The first few pages of his fresh sketchbook were filled with the Howling Commandos, General Phillips, Peggy, Howard - and even Lorraine, the woman who had kissed him at their base of operations. So maybe things had not worked out between them, but they had somehow ended up becoming friends. As the pages turned, more recent faces began to blend into the grains: Nick Fury, Bruce, Natasha, Tony, Clint... It went on until he was unconsciously drawing Loki's face - That subtle look of calm on his face while he was reading or feeding the birds, yet his eyes held a different emotion: Cautious, far-off, tired.
Steve had just begun drawing a more complicated pose: Loki's torso from the waist up. A bird had perched onto his finger, and Loki's lip was upturned just a bit; when the phone rang.
He nearly jumped, his pencil falling from his fingers and skidding to the edge of the desk, clattering on the floor. The soldier checked the clock momentarily, noting the time. Was it really almost four? He rubbed his face. Oh, the phone! Quickly pushing away from the desk, he jogged down the stairs. It must have been important for someone to call this early.
Just before the fourth ring, he picked up: "Hello?" Steve may have sounded more winded than he was, the sense of urgency in him on high due to being jolted from his world and the lack of sleep.
#what I love about this is #neither of them would have a clue whatâs going on #neither of them would know about Starkâs love of AC/DC #or who the hell AC/DC even was
Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that neither Loki nor Steve know what the fuck AC/DC is?
An Unusual Meeting in the Park
âIs that an invitation?â He questioned, raising a brow when Steve began talking about Ellis Island. He smiled after a few moments, knowing that that probably would make the other feel rather awkward, trying to show that he was making a bit of a joke. Loki probably wouldnât go to any of these places. He wasnât ready to go venturing out on his own, he didnât want anyone to notice him.
âI did not know you went to art school, though I suppose I should have guessed from your skill.â he looks down at his sketchbook. âWe do not have those sort of classes in Asgard, but that does not mean we do not have artists.â Loki knew how to paint but his skill was nowhere near as well defined as Steveâs skill with a pen and pencil.
âHave you always enjoyed drawing?â he hoped he wasnât prying, but if they were going to make small talk, he might as well askâŠ
An invitation?
Steve was caught off guard. Not in a bad way. He opened his mouth, eyes widening a bit from the surprise, then he thought about it, slightly pouting his lips during the process - it seemed to be an intermittent habit. Okay, he realized that Loki was just joking, but hey maybe that wasn't such a bad idea.
Then Loki started talking about art, and Steve's face lit up. He blushed when his skill was complimented on.
"Actually, yeah. I drew on everything and with anything I could get my hands on as a kid. It used to drive my mom up the wall when she would walk into the living room on her good days and see scribbles all over the place. It's, uhm. It's a relaxing pass time and it's solid." He smiled bashfully again. "Art from Asgard must really be something else. We don't have any of it here from my knowledge, though." Steve was curious about it. He liked seeing art from everywhere. "Do you draw or paint at all yourself?"
An Unusual Meeting in the Park
Loki listened very closely, those bright green eyes watching him intently now, taking in every twitch of a muscle, every expression the man made as he let himself get lost in the memories. He knew it had to be difficult for the man, difficult to live in a time that was completely different from his own.
He could relate in some way though. He was from a completely different world and although he could grasp many of the concepts and ideas of Midgardian technology, he often had trouble learning how things worked. He was lucky that his coworkers had been willing to train him after and before work to help him get used to the machines or he would have never made it here.
Perhaps he could help the captain as well. Steve seemed to want to help him, but he needed help as well, it was written all over his face. Steve was lost, in a world he was having trouble adjusting to, in a world where he could be considered an antiqueâŠ
Without realizing it, heâd gently placed a hand over Steveâs, green eyes still fixed on him. Steve seemed like he needed a friend just as much as he didâŠ
He caught himself before Steve may have noticed, quickly returning his hand to his malt, taking a sip. âI do not know what places there are. I have heard of the Statue of LibertyâŠâ He didnât know anything else really. The Stark Tower was something heâd seen up close, so he didnât need to have a look at that any time soon.
But Steve had noticed.
Unsure what to do about it, he decided just to keep the conversation going. He started to eat again, despite his appetite having dropped a little. "Mm," he lit up at the sound of the Statue of Liberty. "That place is great. I've been there once, back in the 40's." It almost seemed surreal to say that, but he needed to get used to it. "It was an assignment spot at an art college I was going to." There was a bashful smile on his face and he laughed, "I, ah, almost didn't make it up to the top. Let's just say, I wasn't always this fit. That's a great place to go, I hear, these days for a good lunch and a great view."
Slowly, his appetite built up again. "You can catch a ferry from Ellis Island. It's all one big National Monument, but ah.." He blushed, the bashful smile returning. Loki might not have wanted to hear all that. "I could tell you about other places, if you're interested enough. Of course, the facts I give you probably aren't accurate. I've been meaning to have a look around New York extensively, see everything they've changed, but..." He lacked the motivation. "I just haven't gotten around to it."
