Ryan Cassata is one of the subjects at the heart of "Songs For Alexis," a beautiful docu-love story about a teenage trans male musician (Cassata) and his girlfriend, Alexis. Directed by Elvira Lind, the film just had its world premiere at Hot Docs, where Ryan was in attendance. And he's shared his experiences here on /bent.

A cis-guy on facebook wrote “A girl with unshaven armpits is probably one of the worst things I’ve [seen] on the Internets and I’ve seen some pretty gross things.” I tried explaining to him and his friends (both male and female) that comments like this are part of what oppresses women. Hands of Hate - Ryan Cassata
Email Interview with Ryan Cassata
Interview by Molly Louise Hudelson.
(Photograph from Pulse Magazine- April 2012.)
Once upon a time, I took a course called History of Rock and Roll. We had to write three papers, and for the second paper, an option was to interview a band or musician and write a paper based on the interview. So I reached out to my friend Ryan Cassata, and called him up for the interview.
Here’s a fun fact for all of you reading this: I was so nervous for that interview, I almost puked! I didn’t, though, and wound up getting an A on the paper. I knew I wanted to keep interviewing musicians, but had no idea where to get started. As fate would have it, not much later I heard that Call Me Anything was looking for people to interview them, and soon enough, Circles & Soundwaves was born (you can read that first interview here).
But it’s been nearly two years since then, and last month Ryan approached me about doing a follow-up interview for the blog. I agreed that we were definitely due for another interview, as over the past two years Ryan’s released two albums (The Theme of Humankind and The Rhythm), an acoustic EP (Oh Alexis: Acoustic Sessions, Vol. 1), and a handful of music videos, not to mention moving across the country. At only 19 years old, it’s no question that Ryan’s accomplished a lot for his age, so read on for our interview.
