I’ve seen a little too many depictions of this trope(?) with S-Ranks, particularly Yoonho and Jongin, and it’s starting to piss me off, so. Here I am

The trope: S-Ranks using money like water. I think that’s a phrase that might not make much sense, but basically, spending money without a care in the world

I’ll start with Yoonho because I already know the arguments for why Jongin would buy expensive stuff. I think Yoonho is a minimalist. He only buys what he needs, really wants, and keeps a strict budget. I feel like he had to because of his experiences at the Fiend Guild. I’ll leave that open to interpretation. Even when he buys gift for friends or Jongin, he doesn’t just get a huge amount of expensive presents for them. I think he puts a lot of thought and energy into each gift he uses. Even if it’s something that catches his eye, he thinks about whether it’s really worth it or not. It usually is when it comes to Jongin, but it’s only ever so often, not every day

As for Jongin, I get that he dresses fancy, wears jewelry, and has more expensive tastes. He would find it easier to just buy something he needs if it’s convenient. However, I don’t think he ever purposefully flaunts his wealth, if anything, he would be really humble about it. There’s that saying where the actual rich people are quiet about their wealth. That’s Jongin

I get that S-Ranks probably get a ton of money, but most of them, it’s because they literally lead major guilds. Of course they’re going to have money. But it makes no sense for a good chunk of them to spend money however they wish without planning. “It’s easy for them to buy expensive stuff though.” And why would they waste money on something frivolous? Makes no sense to me

I also wanted to rant about how people portray Jinwoo’s relationship with other S-Ranks, but I’ll save that for next time

I personally think he should share more with the class

It does make me wonder though. I haven’t watched season 2 of the anime, but I think the manhwa is the only adaptation that has this Jongin monologue. He says he hasn’t played with ants since he was a child. I know that the anime has him participate in the third Jeju raid, but according to his lines in the manhwa, is the manhwa implying that this is his first Jeju raid? It certainly would be interesting if it was, especially with how well he handles it in the manhwa because he took more of a backseat role in the novel as far as I remember

For anyone who has done the recent archon quest in Genshin or at least knows what I’m talking about:

Pantalone is just Choi Jongin but actually canonically fleshed out and morally grey. Like, they both smoke cigarettes, wear an insane amount of jewelry, look too pretty for how sus they actually act—

I just need Jongin with those fancy glasses that Pantalone has. Ugh, if someone doesn’t draw Jongin with Pantalone’s style, I will. It fits him insanely well

I feel like a whole arc was missing somewhere between Jeju and the double dungeon, not including the school dungeon break. I fill it with ChoiBaek, but that’s not the point. I feel like it was supposed to be JinHae stuff, but it was so vague and weird? Why is Haein suddenly fighting Jinwoo’s shadows? Fight her yourself, coward

While I liked seeing the Knight Guild in the manhwa, there really wasn’t a need to show that off? There are a dozen other better things that could have been shown instead that would have kept Jinwoo away from Jinah during the school dungeon break

I just think Jinwoo should have spent more time with the other S-Ranks, especially after the Jeju raid concluded successfully. It’s not in Jinwoo’s character at all, but let me live—

It is possible they didn’t celebrate because of Byungyu’s death, but you know, if you kept him alive, that wouldn’t be a problem—

I dunno, maybe I’m just being sensitive again

Not only did we miss out on seeing so much angsty backstory from Jongin, but we also missed out on seeing potential parallels between Jongin and Jinwoo. These two are like polar opposites. Jongin hides his thoughts and feelings behind a smile. Jinwoo keeps his face neutral but his actions say all of this feelings. Jinwoo grew to become the strongest hunter in Korea. Jongin was the Ultimate Hunter who basically got completely shoved out of the spotlight by Jinwoo (in both good but mostly bad ways)

sometimes i think about jong-in passing out alone in his office and then jolting awake, in near tears, from a nightmare, and all he can do is sit there and shake. i want to hug him and force him to go to therapy. i think he does shoulder a lot in silence and hide behind his smiles and i need him to Get Therapy

We’ve seen this happen once in the anime, but I wonder just how many times that has happened to him. Imagine if he has tried going to therapy, but he’s so good at hiding his emotions that therapy wasn’t able to help him

This is why I just throw Yoonho at him. Can’t say no to cuddles and sad kitty eyes

I think more people should know and talk about this. The man does not like fires he can’t control, which can sometimes be his own. I think Jongin feels a mix of fascination with fire because of its beauty and power but also hate because of its destructive nature

Now I wonder if he has a tendency to flinch when something or someone suddenly comes near his face because of the firecracker. Hmm

tholenn concepts part too many (they been in my brain a lot recently)

if they were teachers in the American public school system, Lennart would teach AP German Language and Culture and AP Latin. personally I hc that Lennart on the upper end of average in high school but let’s say he’s a bit smarter than that for the sake of the au. this is also assuming that he doesn’t have to provide for Bjorn for whatever reason because he would not have the time, money, or sanity for that while teaching two different AP courses…

Thomas is the head wrestling coach, and he also teaches Algebra 2 but he’s shit at it and focuses more on coaching so the class is an easy a (cuz there’s no state test or anything for it). students like him despite that because he’s generally a chill guy and he’s actually pretty funny (for a teacher)

they’re married but they kept their last names so no one knows because their classrooms are in different wings of the school so they never get to interact until their home

bonus:

Jong-In teaches all levels of Chem (he likes blowing stuff up) including general, honors, and AP and coaches tennis (he loves overworking himself so I’m giving him a big workload)

Yoon-Ho is the powerlifting coach and a volunteer firefighter (he’s the one who’s always on standby when Jong-In does class experiments. they aren’t together yet but one day)

Hae-In is the track coach

Jin-Woo is her househusband (jk he has a job just not at the school. he pops in occasionally and helps out with track meets (and sometimes other school events) so all the students on the track team know who he is)

Jin-Chul is the head of campus security and one of the school police officers

Gun-Hui is the principle

Byung-Gu teaches all levels of geography and world history

Meri, Bjorn, Jin-Ah, Song-Yi, Mirei, & Suho are all students

I really like this AU and the headcanons for it, but I did have some of my own that I wanted to add. Some are different from the above but only because of personal preferences (I don’t have anything to add onto the original ThoLenn headcanons because they were already good in my opinion):

Choi Jongin: I like the idea of him teaching chemistry a lot, but I imagine him being good and coaching archery rather than tennis. Just a personal preference

Baek Yoonho: I imagine him as a biology teacher for some reason. Maybe because it would mean his science classes could conflict with Jongin’s. He would definitely be a volunteer firefighter too though like in the original post

Lim Taegyu: I see him as a tennis coach more than Jongin (which is funny considering who the actual archer is), but I could also see him teaching an economics class. He does seem to know how money flows based on how he ran his guild

Min Byungyu: I do think he would teach world history, but I also imagine him being a theater arts teacher too. As for geography, I think it would be cute if Lee Eunseok taught geography alongside him

Lee Juhee: School nurse. I don’t have much to say on her, I just think she would make a great school nurse

I have some more, but I don’t want to make this too long. Might make another post about the rest if something motivates me again

When you go to reread old SL fics you used to love, but your headcanons changed so drastically that those fics now fill you with rage, but you can’t say anything about it because it’s very much just a “you” problem

The fics I’m talking about aren’t bad fics. I’m just upset about the characterization. Specifically making other characters weaker/stupid to make Jinwoo look better. Maybe it’s just because I don’t like Jinwoo all that much, I dunno

I would mention the fics, but I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings or discourage anyone from writing, so I might just stew in silence

my ideal jin-woo - jong-in - hae-in dynamic is guy w/ his girlfriend and his gf’s friend on an outing except he’s lowkey third wheeling his own date. yes i think jong-in and hae-in should be friends and i think she deserves to get a little snarky with him sometimes while on their hangouts. he’s like “what eyeshadow would suit me best ^-^” and she’s like “sir you’re going to pick red anyways you always do”. and then jin-woo behind them is pondering how he managed to third wheel his own damn date. in his head he’s side eyeing jong-in. why are you here where is your bf

Have I mentioned that I have this AU headcanon (that I kind of stole from @esquitor) where Yoonho saved Jongin from a fire when they first met? And I headcanon that Jongin finds Yoonho’s tiger/beast form very comforting because Yoonho saved him in his beast form? Think of the We Bare Bears burrito thing

I keep forgetting how deep Choi Jongin’s voice is. It’s deep in canon and makes sense because he smokes. Do you think people get taken aback by his voice? Like, you see his face and think he has a soft, light voice, but then you’re hit by sudden bass. Like Felix from Stray Kids

It would be funny if Yoonho got kind of startled by Jongin’s voice when he heard it for the first time and tried to play it off but failed miserably

thinking about how Thomas Andre (a man who could basically get anyone to do whatever he wants with a look and has the power to get away with it) probably does all of his chores himself

meanwhile, Lennart Niermann (who is known for being capable and responsible and all that) most definitely has burned water and made terrible mistakes while learning how to cook, clean, etc.

*taps original post* All of this. Both of them have had to do things themselves at one point, just with different levels of success. Which could explain why both of them came in person to Korea and went to see Jinwoo themselves rather than send someone to get him in their place

I like to think that in their first meeting, Lennart only backed off because he wasn't expecting a National Ranked hunter of all people to be in Korea at the same time as him. However, I head canon that after that interaction, Lennart is more mentally prepared and willing to talk back to Thomas Andre. He might even be more blunt than Thomas because he's German. I say "might" because that's a stereotype, and I don't know if that's true

Speaking of German, I think more people should mention that about Lennart. No big stereotypes or anything, but I feel like some people make him a bit of a pushover. Listen, if you insulted one of the strongest people on the planet for the first time without realizing it, you would panic too. I won't talk about it too much here because that's not the point of this reblog, but if what anything I've see on the Internet about an average German's diet is true, Lennart might not even know how to cook. He and his brother probably lived on bread, cold meats, and cheese

if they call members for the White Tiger Guild White Tigers and members of the Scavenger Guild Scavengers, what do they call members of guilds with names like the Ahjin Guild, or the Justitia Guild, or the Richter Guild

I was thinking of Shadows for the Ahjin Guild because someone probably asked Jinwoo who his members were, and he said “Shadows” because he misunderstood. No idea about the other two guilds

In the novel, the Fame Guild is called the Shining Star Guild in some translations, so I think Shining Stars would be cute. Fiend Guild also goes by Reaper Guild, so I think Reapers would be cool

For the Hunters Guild, I wonder if Jongin chose that name because it would be too generic to refer to his members as “the Hunters,”which forces people to refer to his members by name. To humanize them in the way that he isn’t with his Ultimate Weapon/Hunter title. I dunno, just some shower thoughts
