Chapter 1 -Â KatarinaÂ
The pills were starting to feel warm because of the amount of sweat that had formed in the palm of her hand. She had no idea if it had been seconds, minutes, or hours. All she did was stare at the large number of pills in her palm ,tears dried against her face.
She closed her eyes, lifting her hand up to her face.
Three loud pops rang out and her eyes opened again.Â
The pills flew from her hand and she jumped up quickly.
âWhat was thatâ, she said sluggishly. It wasnât unusual that she heard gunshots, especially in her part of town, but these were loud and sounded closer than usual.Â
Hesitantly she walked out of her room into the main living area. She and her mother had lived in a two bedroom apartment, it was quite small.
The television had been muted but was stationed on Channel 23 Global News.Â
She grabs the remote and unmutes the television.
âAnyone displaying the symptoms previously mentioned, should seek urgent care. The organization âAEGISâ has organized pop up shelters providing immediate care for those possibly infected with this virus. Please remain indoors to prevent the spread of XBYT105. The future is in your hands-â
Another round of gunshots rang out, and it was closer than the last.Â
She walks towards the door and looks through the peek-hole. Her neighbors had also been investigating the noises. However they opened their door.Â
It was an older Hispanic man, he had two kids. He looked both ways but abruptly stopped all movement.Â
âHey- What are you doing?!â, he shouted, raising his hands in the air.
Then another round of gunshots rang out, however this time she saw the impact.Â
Blood splattered, some ended up on the glass of her peek-hole.Â
The man instantly fell to the ground.
Two men appeared. They were geared up with bullet proof vests, helmets, with guns in hand.Â
They stormed into the dead man's apartment and the screams of the man's two children echoed in the hallway.
She immediately stepped back and covered her mouth.Â
âWhat the fuckâŠâ she whispered.
âWhat the fuck... what the fuck⊠what the fuckâ, she said as she quickly walked back to her room.Â
Immediately she grabs her phone and dials 911.
âSorry the line you have tried calling is busy, please call back or try calling back laterâ
She tries calling again but this time it doesnât go through. Checking her service, she realizes she doesnât have any bars.
She starts to hear loud knocks on her front door.
Squinting, she notices that she had forgotten to lock the door.Â
The knocking turns into banging and it feels like time is slowing down. Quickly she ran to her balcony, there was a connecting staircase down to the street.
âShitâ, she says aloud.Â
The cityscape view that was once clear was different. There is smoke emerging from buildings and a lot of people on the street below. People looked angry and confused.Â
A helicopter labeled AEGIS passes over the neighborhood and she sees something being dropped from above. She doesnât know what it is.
Quickly she closes the balcony door behind her and starts to rush down the stairs.
When she reaches the street, she immediately starts coughing. She can hear yelling in the distance accompanied by cries of women and children. Smoke had started to fill up half of the street and people started running to the opposite end.Â
She grabs her shirt and puts her face in it to stop any further inhalation of the unknown substance.Â
