Ghost Hunt Fandom Survey

Hello all! I thought it would be interesting to see a follow-up to the previous Ghost Hunt survey (results) with some additional questions. Since the original creator is no longer around, I decided to create my own survey. :)

This survey is open to anyone who has seen and/or read Ghost Hunt by Fuyumi Ono and Shiho Inada. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to answer.

Read a dialogue between Ghost Hunt manga illustrator Inada Shiho and the author of the original novel series, Ono Fuyumi.

This is the last translated article in the Da Vinci’s Reprint Commemoration Special Feature. The magazine had another Ghost Hunt feature a year after, in December 2011, after the rewrite was fully published. I hope you enjoyed it. Before I do that, I’m going to tackle two Ghost Hunt-related interviews published in the Yuu magazines. Look forward to those sometime in summer!

This is the second readers’ column in the Ghost Hunt Reprint Commemoration Special Feature (2010). Read the first one here.

Column: The charms of our beloved Ghost Hunt

I was a second year middle school student when I read Ono-sensei’s works from the beginning to the end after getting into the “Twelve Kingdoms”. “Ghost Hunt” was already out of print, but my local library miraculously had it, so I was able to read it. I was excited before reading it and my heart beat quickly after reading it. These books were a bite with multiple tastes. (F - 21)

I didn’t easily reach my hand out to scary stories in the beginning, but I wasn’t able to stop once I started reading! The activities of the characters were really cool and my heart was constantly racing. (F - 26)

I loved all of the members, not one exception. I often talk about these characters with my family, but the more I talked, the more I actually felt that I loved each of the characters. I love them to the point that I can’t stop talking about them! (F - 17)

Although it is a light novel, I never encountered a work which has such elaborate foreshadowing and treats spiritual phenomena as science; I got obsessed in one go. Could it perhaps be that I’m attached to my current occupation (psychiatrist / cerebral functions research) thanks to this series? (F - 36)

After I graduated from high school, I nonchalantly bought the the first two volumes. I read it in one go after I got home. I was also afraid of going to the toilet that same night, but whenever I had time, I would keep rereading it. Every month I would check for new publications, and wait for the new book. When it ended, I got lonely, and wished that it would never end. That’s what I ended up feeling about the series. (F - 40)

When I was in middle school, the friend of my older sister read it to me against my will, but I thought it was fun! I was completely absorbed and finished reading it within one week. (M - 32)

I bought Inada’s version of Ghost Hunt, because Ono-sensei’s other writings suit my tastes. I thought the various attitudes regarding the mysterious phenomena have an extraordinarily clever balance. Personally, I’m a skeptic when it comes to the occult, but the books absolutely do not blindly accept or negate it; it’s a rare work. (M - 30)

I thought it would be fun to translate the readers’ columns in the Ghost Hunt Reprint Commemoration Special Feature (2010).

The first column shows the reactions of Japanese Ghost Hunt fans when they heard about the novel rewrite. These answers were collected from a survey on the official rewrite website.

I was saved by Ghost Hunt’s feeling of treasuring your comrades . It’s a story which had a huge influence on my life. (F - 21)

The main characters as well as the supporting characters are awesome! (F - 19)

I read it for the first time when I was in elementary school. Now I’m the same age as Bou-san... But my love for this series has not changed. (F - 25)

I borrowed it at the library numerous of times. Now I can finally line it up on my bookshelf. (F - 29)

Emperor Ono*, I’ve waited so looong! (F - 18)

Because of this story I know how to cut the Nine Syllables. (F - 23)

I can’t sleep because I look forward to the release date.** (F - 21)

These are the only books of which I can say that “I love” everything! (F- 21)

It’s top-notch as a mystery and horror. Although it’s Ono-sensei’s starting point, it’s a brilliant masterpiece . (M - 26)

It feels like my lover, whom I thought had died, has lived. This is the best news of the year (F - 27).

* Ono Fuyumi is nicknamed “Emperor Ono” (小野主上 Ono-Shushou) by her fans. ** This seems to be a pun on the title of volume 3: I Can't Sleep Due to the Abundance of Evil Spirits.

This matrix sorts the Ghost Hunt characters according to their abilities. It does not tell us where the characters are placed precisely, so I used two tables. Table 1 (red) uses the placements of the pictures, and table 2 (green) uses the placements of the texts.

Below these pages: 1) An introduction to the characters’ abilities. It doesn’t say that much, actually. 2) An occult/psi glossary.

The Ghost Hunt Wiki (GHWiki) strives to become the most accurate and comprehensive Ghost Hunt resource ever. GHWiki will be loosely modeled after the Detective Conan Wiki.

@thisurlplease did a lot of hard work to get things ready, such as creating the character infobox, the manga, novel and anime pages, and more… So we’re actually a bit further along than expected! But there’s still a long way to go…

If you’re interested in helping out at the wiki, please create an account to start editing. :P If you don’t know where to start contributing, I suggest you take a look at the Contribute list. If you want to work something else, that’s also fine… Because there are a lot of things you could do!

Okay, these pages are part of the Ghost Hunt Reprint Commemoration Special Feature of the Da Vinci December 2010 issue. I’m not going to translate and put these on Story Unlocker because this section is just fluff.

The section is titled “A thorough dissection of Ghost Hunt: the seven mysteries which decipher the series”. It basically goes through each of the seven books: an accompanying photo, a teaser of the book, and a blurb about Naru and Mai’s relationship development. ... It doesn’t containing anything new.

The column on the last page is about real life cases, like the Winchester Mystery House. Another example given is a ghost photographed in an old castle in Wales in 2004. I believe it’s referring to this: Ghost snapped at Welsh castle.

Still, it’s nice fluff to look at, so I’m leaving it here!

The Ghost Hunt Reprint Commemoration Special Feature of the Da Vinci December 2010 issue contained an interview and a book guide column on ghost hunters and ghost hunting books.

This is obviously to promote the books, but it might be worth it check out because the majority of the suggested books were originally written in English!

A chronology of the Ghost Hunt franchise and real life events, along with a short introduction which accompanied the chronological table.

This bit in the magazine was quite interesting. It clarifies something about the sequel Akumu no Sumu Ie... But otherwise it doesn’t really tell us anything new. It’s basically a chronological recap of the Ghost Hunt franchise up to 2010, along with its historical context. Though it did make me wonder why they selected certain events listed in the chronology...
