ILYA ROZANOV WEEK: DAY FOUR FAVORITE TRAIT ↪ HIS EMPATHY AND KINDESS 🥺💕
“When our childhood homes are chaotic and dangerous, we learn that the way to stay safe is to always be on alert — hypervigilant. Our nervous system never calms down because it’s constantly on the lookout for the next bomb that is going to explode [...] As the show goes on, we will learn that underneath Ilya’s extremely hard shell is the heart of a squishy teddy bear wrapped in a warm blanket, but it takes YEARS for Shane to see it. When we look at Ilya through the lens of what he learned as he grew up, it makes sense why he behaves the way he does. We can even have empathy for the level of hypervigilance and fear he lives with. I like to lay things out this way because it’s usually a hell of a lot harder to give ourselves that same grace. We have an idea of who we “should” be in our heads, and when we don’t live up to that we assume it’s because we’re a failure, a useless waste of space. None of that is true: we are behaving in ways that make complete sense when we understand how our nervous system was trained to respond to our environment.” — Reading Ilya Rozanov through the lens of trauma.
barbie is one of the best aroace characters ive seen on the big screen yet. in a world where aspecs are slowly getting more recognition, hence increasing the targeted negativity from others that comes with not confirming to societal standards, having such a well known character not only have no interest in sex or romance while others in her environment do, but showing that her lack of romantic or sexual feeling is not something that stands in the way of her being her true fulfilled self sends a powerful message against amatonormativity. in this essay i will
and so, the misery persists

Rock-and-roll? The sink is broken. What the heck is wrong with you?
Rose Landry highest self esteem of all time. she has mediocre sex a couple times with a guy who seems not all that into it and goes "hm. Well, I'M definitely not the problem. the only possible answer is that he is Gay."
impeccable reasoning, no notes.
and she was RIGHT

Wow. So, when? Since our, uh, rookie season. Since your rookie season? No, it's not true. Since before that. Not helpful.

Hollanov + season 1 timeline
Okay, so now that Heated Rivalry season one has come to a close, let’s talk about why it was such a success.
Setting aside the brilliancy of the cast and crew for a moment (that’s definitely the main reason), there’s something that is so singular about this show that has broken the mold. It’s also why we all are in agreeance that this is hands down one of the best adaptions we’ve ever seen.
It’s the fact that every scene is about them. Even episode three where it’s focused on Scott and Kip, is about them. Their relationship. Episode three was a vehicle for episode five and that was for its impact on their relationship.
Other than that, every scene and every moment focuses on either their own individual POVs or their scenes together. And even when they are apart, their scenes are there to instruct the audience about their characters and their feelings AND HOW THEY RELATE TO ONE ANOTHER.
This is the first time I have seen a show that understood it was a romance novel.
If you read romance, you get what I’m saying. Watching this show for me was surreal because it’s literally, actually, the book just come to life. It’s excellent in its delivery because of the care and the PRECISION to which everyone involved took to elevate the storytelling instead of trying to “reinvent it”.
This show really and truly is a masterclass of show running, writing, adapting, acting, decision making, etc. From episode one cold opening on them meeting to the last moment with them driving off into the sunset, every single decision that went into this show was sooooo intentional.
There weren’t any superfluous scenes about anyone or anything else because that’s not the story. The entire focus is on them. And that’s what makes it so good. That’s what makes it, truly, a masterpiece.
