They remember the scene between Robin and Will, the avalanche conversation. Robin tells him the signs and all that and then we see that scene between Will and Mike which ends with a little push from Will towards Mike (flirting) but Mike doesn't reciprocate, he doesn't realize it. Could it be that this was the writers' way of justifying telling us that Mike doesn't feel the same way about Will? I try to make sense of everything because it affected me a lot that Byler was not canon...

that kind of reaction isn’t random. you don’t get that level of visceral, immediate response unless the general audience has already internalised the pairing as narratively plausible. they saw those two faces side by side and their brains went, “oh. yeah. that tracks”.
