Katherine nearly snorted at his question. If only he knew⌠There were a lot of things Jon Snow did not know. But she wasnât about to present herself as an open book to him. Not when he clearly assumed the worst of her when he saw her on the plane with Klaus. He had every reason to, since Klaus took the ring from her. But she got it back now that he was dead. God, she had run into the jungle by herself and screamed in delight for ten minutes after he took his last pitiful breath. She had even shed a couple of joyful tears, too, before composing herself and returning to the beach. But she would never, ever forget what that initial and alien feeling of freedom was like.
âI havenât given up. Iâm simply a realist. And Iâm sure my friends and family will fare just fine without me,â she responded, snaking around the question she didnât have an answer to. She didnât have anything to go back to. Friends? Katherine didnât have friends. She had allies and lackeys, and they wouldnât miss her. And as for her family, her dull as dishwater twin sister was the shining daughter for some fucking reason. Her mother was dead, had been since their births. And her father would only mourn the loss of the alliance her union with Klaus would have brought. And then there was Robb⌠Beautiful, wonderful Robb. He would have no trouble finding another girl to wed. So, yes. They would all be just fine without her, and she would be more than fine without them.
âSo generous,â she mocked him in response as she leaned against one of the cave walls. It was too quiet for her not to have heard his little comment. Generous little Jon Snow, of course he was leaping to help everyone out. The Stark men were honorable like that. She could admire it, if honor didnât fuck you over in the end. When he spoke to her of his own accord, not answering any questions or returning snark, she rolled her eyes a bit at his words. He did have a point. She dearly missed her luxurious lifestyle, and it took a few days for the shock to wear off before she could get accustomed to this new way of life. But she was adaptable like that. No use in wasting precious time and energy on nostalgia when you had polar bears and monsters and mosquitos to fight.
âIâm a complex woman, sweetheart,â she said, her tone sassy as she scrutinized her ruined manicure with a slight grimace. There was no point in doing your nails on this island - she had tried, and chipped and broken them almost immediately. Her gaze shifted to the shiny ring on her finger and a feeling of melancholy washed over her for just a moment before she cleared her throat and pushed it down to make way for her usual cockiness.
âI may be high maintenance, but that doesnât mean I donât know how to get down and dirty.â The glint in her eyes as she stared him down suggested a double entendre in her words, carefully picked to make him uncomfortable for her own entertainment. There wasnât much else to do on this island other than mess with Jon, after all, and he made it so easy. âAnd for the last time, Snow, I never said I wanted to stay here. But Iâm ready to accept my fate now. It beats being heartbroken later because I dared to hope. If weâre rescued, fantastic. If weâre notâŚâ Katherine shrugged. She wouldnât dare let herself consider any option that would end in despair. Sheâd felt enough despair to last several lifetimes already - she was very much done with it.
Iâm sure my friends and family will fare just fine without me. Those words caught him off guard. Sure he didnât know her very well from the handful of times they had actually been around each other, all of them with Robb around, but with a person who had her kind of family and lifestyle surely someone would miss her. Robb would. The second he thought that his uncertainty came to a halt. Why did he care whether or not people were missing her? He shouldnât. He doesnât. On top of his fiance going missing now his would be best man and brother was missing too. Despite the fact that they were the ones stuck on an almost deserted island, he felt terrible that Robb and the others would have to deal with that.
Jon rolled his eyes when she repeated him mockingly but chose to bite his tongue. All he had to do was finish up there and he wouldnât have to see her again hopefully for a while. The island was big sure, but it wasnât that big. He was bound to run into her every now and then, he just preferred those encounters to be few and far in between. Once the first container had finally filled he let out a sight and reached for the other one, stretching out his back a little as he set to filling the second container.
âiâm sure you are, sweetheart.â He couldnât help but grumble in return. Whe was she still here? Didnât she have somewhere else far away from him to be? Surely she didnât want to stick around him any more than he wanted with her. He went back to ignoring her presence again, instead willing the container to fill faster. Heâd rather get lost in the jungle than be here around her. When she spoke up again he snorted out loud and shook his head softly. âI donât doubt that at all.â Jon had to admit, when he first met her he liked her. She kept Robb on his toes and he absolutely loved how she mad Robb squirm. Sure she was a little high maintenance but at least she didnât glare at him every chance she got. She made his brother and that was enough for him.
Though suffice it to say, he doesnât think that way about her now, not after seeing her with that prick on the plane, the engagement ring Robb had give her having mysteriously disa- âWhat the hell is that?â Jon bit out, staring directly at her hand, or rather the ring that sat on her finger. Heâd recognize it anywhere. Against his better judgment he had glanced over at her again and thatâs when he had seen it, the tiny glint catching his eye. âYouâre kidding me right?â Jon dropped the container he was holding and stood up straight before he turned to face her, anger clear on his face, âTake that off. That doesnât belong to you.â The fact that she would be wearing that now after what she did, and after all that crap sheâd said about accepting her fate.
It was obvious that the guy heâd seen her with on the plane didnât make it after the crash, so seeing her with the ring and wearing it proudly as if she expected she could just go back to being Robbâs fiance - it pissed him off to no end.
