A sweet piano melody echoes in the hallway and the sound of small steps against the wooden floor accompanies the rhythm. And for a fleeting moment a pale silhouette appears with a twirl, only to disappear again at the end of the arched door. Her dress flutters behind before it also disappears behind the wall. You cannot help but blink, rub your eyes at the scene.

Wasn’t this house supposedly— neglected? You had just arrived to inspect it. It was something related to your work, something about photographing empty spaces, a possible scenery for your next photography session, or was it just your curiosity peeking? It didn’t matter in that moment since you had already snatched a photo. That you will later find out it’s nothing but an empty hallway.

You would pinch your cheek and arm and it would HURT!! It’s real!! You run down the hallway and a feast is awaiting you atop a candle-lit table. The room reeks of mold and as you look around your view is blocked again by that figure. Twirling around the room barefoot as her white transparent dress floats along. Long platinum blond hair touch your arm and a wave of strawberry and cream splashes on your face.

“Who are you?” You cannot help but ask. You reach out to hold her arm but she takes a few sprinkle steps backwards and escapes your grasps. Her pink lips curve into a smile and her lilac-colored eyes finally rest on you. You feel magnetized, charmed even; frozen in place for a moment. A moment that felt like an eternity. You would come back to this memory in the future. To dive into this unexplainable euphoria you felt.

She giggles softly and with another graceful twirl she bows and disappears into the hallway along with the music. A wisp of air blows the candles and you stand in a dark room. It’s cold, and reeks of mold. The food on the table is rotten and you feel a chill run down your spine.

“I’d better get outta here.” You mumble to yourself and open your eyes.

A strawberry in hand, massacred by her pearly teeth; The sweet crimson nectar is revealed as it painted her lips upon the bite. Adalina has been sitting on the rock stairs of the garden with a huge bowl of the red fruits between her nude legs. The short dress she is wearing is but a light cover under the hot sun. It’s this season between Spring and Summer; the intertwined insufferably warm mornings and chill nights that still need the protection of a cover. The scent of Jasmine and citrus flowers is intoxicating, whiffing it as she pauses before every bite. Her violet hues are gazing at the green grass, the olive trees and the sea that sparkles in the distance. These little moments give her the solidarity she needs. Alone yet not lonely, the nature surrounds her in every way possible. The tender touch of grass, the aroma wrapping around her as the soft touch of sun rays… comforting.

“Adalina?” She hears a voice in the distance and glances above her shoulder to meet with her eyes the figure that approaches her. A smile curves on her lips and she raises her hand to wave for them to come join her.

Trauma makes you stop aging the moment you were scarred. Wounded and broken the years that follow are stagnant. Like you are stuck in a frozen lake… watching your surroundings change, the seasons pass yet the ice you are stuck in never melts. And so you physically age yet you are still this little fragile broken child… the one who was abused and robbed of your most precious thing. Your own life.

Adalina has this softness this purity… soiled purity one would say. And despite what someone would expect it’s not painted in this white clean color. But it’s dirtied with smudged hues of black and red.
