His body glistened as the sunlight spread across his frame, each droplet of water glimmering like a gemstone as he walked in my direction.
I cleared my throat, eyes returning to my magazine, pretending that I hadn’t been staring. I flicked the page and gazed at an article about some miracle face lotion, but it’s no match for when he squatted in front of me and gently touched my calf to get my attention. As if he didn’t already have it.
I lowered the magazine to meet his eyes, the corners of his mouth already easing into a gentle smirk.
“Excuse me ma’am, I think you might be sat on my towel,” he uttered softly, causing a small grin to settle on my own lips.
“Oh,” I said as I leaned forward in my chair, “My apologies sir,” I countered in the sweetest Southern drawl I could physically muster.
He just breathed a laugh and reached his right hand up my leg tenderly, stopping at my waist and lingering for a second before grabbing the beach towel I had been leaning against while he swam. He pulled it back towards him and stood, beginning to dab the water from his body.
I tried to turn back to my reading but honestly, who could give a fuck about some $40 anti-ageing cream the size of a quarter, especially when Billy was around, shirtless, and dripping wet. My eyes travelled across his shoulders, then down his stomach as he gently rubbed at his skin.
“Hey creeper, my eyes are up here,” Billy laughed, catching me ogling him.
“And they’re beautiful eyes, Bill,” I said, dropping my magazine on top of my bag and standing up from my seat, “But you can’t deny me a sight like this,”. I stepped up to him, placing my arms on his shoulders and gently combing my fingers into his soaked and already-tangling curls.
Billy wrapped the towel around my back, using it to pull me closer and hold me to him, adding, “I guess I’d be pretty pissed if I didn’t get to see you like this too,” and nodding his head down to gesture to my attire, a cherry-print two-piece swimsuit I’d been waiting to break out. Unfortunately, life in Hawkins is rarely sunny, so when an opportunity arose for the two of us to drive out of town to a nearby lake for the day, we took it with both hands.
It felt good to see Billy like that, not weighed down by his home life, not even having to act up like he sometimes did in front of his friends. There, by the lake, bathed in sunshine and calmed by the soft breeze passing through the trees, we were just teenagers. And by God, we were going to cherish every moment of it.
