β happy south asian heritage month to all my beautiful sβ₯οΈuls . south asia is officially recognised as eight countries: Sri Lanka, India, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Maldives β Φ΄ βͺβ Λγ. ΰΉ this month celebrates the diversity that each community holds and recognises their achievements and contributions to the world we have today . also this helps bring to light the struggles of minorities and systemic issues they have to face . one day we will all be able to live peacefully on this earth and not be afraid of war, poverty and racism .
i have gone through and researched these countries and their problems to put together a list of ways we can help through donations and petitions or learning more about them to be inclusive and welcoming π’
one of the most common issues we face is colourism β especially by our own people. from skin bleaching and brightening products to light-skin bias, colourism is an extremely common form of racism and often starts at a young age at home. in south asia, parents are praised for having children with fairer skin tones because of the hurtful ideals from the west and believe that the lighter you are the prettier, which is ultimately not true. the most beautiful thing you could be is yourself and that includes showcasing your skin the way it really is.
it's not their fault that they think that, due to colonialism especially from the british in the 1700s, there was a colour bias implemented that meant that individuals that were light-skinned had more opportunities and government roles with higher powers. this increased the lack of representation and made us feel inferior.
the film and media industry is such a huge part of south asia and for the longest time actresses with lighter skin would get cast for innocent, heroine roles but people with darker skin were made the villains or background characters to seem less important which further cemented the idea of a colour bias.
Sri Lanka
in sri lanka today, tamilians are still affected by the genocide that began almost 70 years ago, due to the atrocities of the war many people have been internally displaced and forced to constantly migrate. almost a quarter of the tamil population live as refugees or migrants; and the disappeared are known to be dead.
40 years ago, a mass anti-tamil riot broke out that left 3,000 people dead and 150,000 homeless; businesses were targeted and buildings were looted. the problem is that there has been no justice served or meaningful accountability and there are major concerns for laws that enable human rights violations. to avoid a repeat of this incident the UN should follow their way to investigate the tamil genocide.

Afghanistan
afghan women's rights are being reduced to almost nothing under taliban rule, facing an enormous humanitarian crisis international aid can only do so much. in june, the taliban intimidated and threatened women who worked for UN agencies and their families in the capital city Kabul. they have also continued to oppress and attack independent journalists and media outlets criticising the talibans' policies. right now we need to close the major international funding gap to prevent the total collapse of basic rights and needs.

Bhutan
more and more families in bhutan are beginning to suffer from food insecurity due to climate vulnerabilities and extreme geographical isolation, almost 50% of all imports are food that is from neighbouring countries like india. because of the extreme weather patterns and limited local yields bhutan frequently suffers damage to critical roads and farmland; cutting off food supply chains to remote villages that make up most of the country. they are in need of infrastructure upgrades and farming methods that are able to withstand the mountainous climate, also food reserves for populations like the bhutanese to protect from global price strikes.

nepal struggles to access basic health services and the ones available are often badly equipped, the staff lack training or are unable to help in complex situations. mothers are severely at risk and most cannot afford to pay for something so important like life saving medical treatment. hunger and food shortages are also very common; due to the fact that only 20% of nepal's land area can be cultivated. many people in villages only have food security for a few months each year however with donations change is possible.

Bangladesh
due to climate change, the coasts of bangladesh have started to slowly submerge underwater; this is very alarming for the country and because of it they are susceptible to natural disasters like floods, cyclones and hurricanes. it was due to graduate from the UN's least developed countries list by 2026 however now it is becoming harder than ever to fulfill that goal. bangladesh needs humanitarian action now more than ever and emergency relief. we can help by providing medical aid, food parcels and the access to clean water through donations that support them fully.

Maldives
the maldives consists of 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks which are mostly low-lying. they have barrier reefs that protect the islands from the destructive effects of the monsoon seasons however due to plastic pollution the coasts of the maldives are being threatened. the largest industry in the country is tourism, who heavily contribute to the consumption of single-use plastics that programmes like Parley Maldives are trying to put a stop to. most clean up work is done by volunteers and local communities because if we are able to protect the ecosystems now we are definitely able to visit the maldives in the future and keep this country alive.

Pakistan
marginalised communities in pakistan rely on water that is contaminated by bacteria and chemicals that impose diseaseβthis is one of the many important issues. the population struggles with food insecurity; many children are malnourished and due to internal struggles there is a lot of displacement within the country. people experiencing extreme poverty are prevented from accessing services and ways to lift them out of the cycle and although international petitions lack legislative authority, meaning that we do not have legal power, the most helpful thing we could do is donate.

the heat has affected a lot of countries around the world, one of them being india, although harsh summers are not normally something to worry aboutβthis is becoming an even greater problem. india issued a heatwave warning from mid-april 2026, since then the temperatures started to reach abnormal, critical levels specifically in the central and eastern parts. this increases the chance of developing certain illnesses and diseases that can be costly to treat. *there has been an enormous surge in unemployment that vastly affects a big chunk of the educated youth; parents spend lots of money to pay for private education, tutors and programs to study abroad for their child to be successful however there aren't any jobs being created for them to take in the future. there is also severe smog and pollution currently that impacts public health and further weakens economic productivity.
