What does it mean to you when I say “run like a girl?”

I hope that whatever I do, I make a difference in the lives of young girls.  That is why I am committed to Girls on the Run.

We need your help.

We set out to put a show on TV about joyfully making the world a brighter place. We wanted to try and put something out there that felt and looked and smelled a little different. You can see the show on The Hub Network. We’re thankful for the opportunity, but we need people like you to help spread the word. Never did we imagine our little family project would ever spread this far. It’s only because of people like you who believe, like we do, that every voice matters. We’re working to make Kid President not just about one kid, but all kids. We want every kid and grown-up to realize they can make a difference. It’s why every episode begins with:

"This program is being broadcast at a special frequency. If you’re receiving this transmission: Congratulations, you are officially awesome."

and every episode ends with a pep talk. We don’t want to make stuff that people just watch. We want you to take action and give the world a reason to dance.

Tell your friends. Write about it. Spread the word. It wasn’t easy to get our happy little show on the air, but thanks to people like you - we did. Let’s keep going.

Outsmarting the Media... Not just for girls?

We talk a lot about how made-up, retouched photographs that have faces reformed and slices of waists and legs removed or built up create unrealistic and unattainable expectations for girls. Do they do the same for boys?</p> Because boys have also been inundated with these images and ‘definitions of beauty,’ has this created an unrealistic expectations for them, too? Does it affect how they treat girls? Are some men less invested in relationships because they think what they really deserve is a girl that looks like the one who was labeled ‘beautiful’ on a magazine cover? Are there guys that think a girl like that is waiting around the corner? Perhaps boys need to be educated as much as girls do about the media and healthy, realistic images. Maybe boys’ brains aren’t wired the same way as girls, but thought it was a perspective worth posing.

No Make-Up Monday, The Naked Face Project, Mean Stinks Gang Up for Good, Operation Beautiful, Girls on the Run... Lots of great initiatives to help us become healthy,strong, and secure people who define for themselves what real beauty is. Here is another project that shines a light in a place that's dark for many. How awesome would it feel to know that the very same things we feel insecure about are actually what others admire about us.

"I was looking through my selfies last night and I realized I am beautiful. I’m pretty cute."

As I watched Selfie it broke my heart to hear what the girls (teens and grown-ups) had to say about themselves. The girls were adorable! The women were so naturally pretty! What an incredible lesson in how critically and differently we see our very own selves. It was amazing to see that some of the compliments people left on selfies were the "flaws" the girls saw in themselves. It can be so uncomfortable to look at ourselves. I admire these mothers and daughters for taking on this challenge (publicly no less). I'm inspired and hopeful that I can come to a realization and comfort level like they did. Thank you, Dove and everyone involved in Selfie, for helping to spread real images of real girls. Thanks for your encouragement to get comfortable in our own skin and appreciate each other.
