This blog is about to be cleaned, gutted, and everything else. That being said, my following/followers list is heck outdated so I’m going to be softblocking things as well to clear it out and make it fresh. I’ll be back to refollow later since he’s going through a reboot.
Prior Relationships (as in friendships, acquaintances etc) || WIP
This to be rather helpful if you're playing a Unova character and end up interacting with Cheren so you'll know how he might act towards you :3 Again this is a work in progress so I'll update it more when I'm not so lazy
Touya(Hilbert)/Touko(Hilda) [remember I happily see either or being the protag as his rival]:
Touya: These two have a problem with being extremely similar that it sometimes causes them to buttheads. Despite this, Cheren views Touya as one of his first best friends and possibly one of his closest. The two know how to push each others buttons as they know each other inside and out, but that doesn't stop their lifelong friendship. When he went missing, Cheren was ultimately shocked and devastated mainly because he never thought his best friend would just disappear without a goodbye.
Touko: Depending on the situation, Cheren and Touko can either get along or butt heads. She always had a way of always outdoing him, even as kids which caused him to be rather jealous of her but he did put these feelings aside for the good of their friendship. When she disappeared, Cheren was completely confused and shocked to know that she had up and left but could only put his blame on the nuisance of the green haired man.
Bianca(Bel): Bianca is also one of his childhood friends. Growing up, he sometimes never understood how the girl could be rather optimistic at life and even found her aloofness to bother him. Despite this, he grew to be rather protect of her because of how her father wanted to control her decisions. Of course, this rather changed while he was on his journey and his views became manipulate thanks to Team Plasma, but once his head was cleared he regretted the mistakes he had made while under the influence. After the 2 years of not seeing each other after the events, Cheren was rather happy to see that the girl had forgiven him and had even matured. He's grown rather close and accustomed to her random visits into town since the departure of Touya/Touko.
N: There isn't much to say about N. Cheren isn't exactly a big fan of him, even after learning about the life the man went through. He was the one that caused him to lose his best friend and even if he won't admit it, he still holds a small bitter grudge against it. He tries his best to always have patience with him though as he knows his friends really do care about him.
Roxie(Homika): These two went through the gym leader certification together, as well as Marlon. Somehow, these two developed a terrible love/hate relationship based on teasing and arguments. Cheren will probably almost always say that he hates Roxie, but that is not the case. He really does care about her as a friend.....even if it is a small percentage.
Marlon(Shizui): These two went through the gym leader certification together, as well as Roxie. They don't have the closest bond, minus that Marlon usually wants Cheren to liven up a bit more, but of course Cheren wonders why he should listen to a guy who hardly ever wears a shirt. Regardless, he does have a little bit of respect towards him.
Elesa(Kamitsure): There isn't too much a history between them, but Elesa was one of the first people to tell Cheren that he should invest in contacts since he went through so much trouble with his glasses during his battles. He still doesn't understand why the girl is so....flashy since he hardly has much memory of what happened during most of his journey. But he did end up listening to her advice and is rather grateful for it.
Cheren didn’t really look into contacts until after he was suggested to wear them by Elesa. At first, he was highly against it as he really did love wearing glasses as he had worn them since he was a kid, but he did begin to see why they were useful. He still keeps his old pair of glasses updated with his prescription, just in case something happens to his contacts since he only gets a monthly prescription.
A few years have passed, but Cheren still sees Alder as his mentor and is still thankful for him in helping him get his teaching job.
Since it has been stated that Cheren is part manga verse, Cheren doesn’t have most of his memories from his Pokemon journey. If anything, he remembers bits and pieces. He does know that he upsetted his friends at the time, and even became focused on wanting to become champion for sometime. The fact still unsettles him to this day.
Like a few people in the community, I like to view passed the Sinnohian and Kantonese as well, but like to view them in our world realm. For this purpose, I view Unova more of America while Sinnoh (and a few others you can probably guess) as Japan. Because of this, Cheren is more so Japanese-American (Sinnohian-Unovian) with his parents being from Sinnoh, but he was born and raised in Unova.
Despite this heritage, Cheren doesn’t really care too much for it. He knows his family history and even knows Japanese fluently because of his parents, but it wasn’t his first language — that was English. Cheren finds himself more intuned with his Unova heritage and if he can help it, he likes to keep it that way. That doesn’t mean he’s completely against speaking Japanese as he tends to speak it around his parents as that’s what they’re most comfortable with. Otherwise, he will only let it slip when he’s completely passed annoyed.
But since Cheren’s family are still big on Japanese customs, at times he will participate in them since he had to most of the time as a child. Now…not so much since he’s adult and can make his own decisions. He always felt that it made him different and he didn’t necessarily like feeling different from other classmates. Of course, his childhood friends were more accepting towards his heritage and some things, even rubbed off on them (much to his annoyance/surprise)
Though he doesn't really go there now, but during the time after the events of BW, Cheren ended up spending a lot of his time on Victory Road. One could have said he had a small bout of depression as he felt utterly hopeless and lost. He wasn't sure what exactly what he wanted to do with his life anymore since the whole goal of wanting to be champion looked to be out of reach. So instead of returning to Nuvema, he stayed there for a few months. It wasn't until Alder located him that he finally left Victory Road and tried to figure out his path again. It was thank to Alder, that he became apprentice to Lenora. Cheren likes to keep the information of him staying on Victory Road between him and Alder and finds it to be a touchy subject since it was when he was at his weakest moment.
Cheren is a virgin. He knows about sex, but he finds it to be a touchy subject. Honestly, if he could keep the whole sex until marriage thing, he’d be a happy camper but he knows that the world doesn’t always work this way. Honestly, he really hates discussing anything sex related and usually will try to avoid it, or maybe even become slightly flustered by it.
Though Cheren grew up in Unova, he has some distant family in Sinnoh as that’s where his parents are originally from. He doesn’t know much about his family there as he’s only visited a few times as a child so most memories are hazy to him. If anything, he just remembers his grandmother’s Glameow that used to try and claw at him which has actually made him despise this Normal Type in particular. He still acknowledges the fact that his family is from the region, but will forever call Unova as his home region since it’s where most of his ties lie.
Cheren’s father was gone constantly during his childhood, usually because of work. Because of this, he spent most of his time with his mother and became quite attached to her. His mother had been restricted of going on a Pokemon journey when she was younger, which is what led her to read him so many stories about them when he was younger. All the Pokemon she received were mainly gifts from her husband and they were all Water Pokemon because she had a giant soft spot for them.
Cheren and his father pretty much only bonded when his father wasn’t busy from work. The young boy thought that was how one should spend most of their life since his father wasn’t always around which is why he became a studious person. When his father started noticing the change, he mentioned to him that everyone didn’t have to spend their entire life working, but it took many years for Cherry to see the truth in his words.
Cheren has a secret talent: playing the piano with almost perfect pitch hearing. His mother started him off as she believed it was a way to teach patience. At first he hated it; then he grew fond of it; and finally he loved it. He doesn’t really keep the hobby now, but does get the itch to play whenever he comes across a piano.
Cheren himself hardly laughs except if he’s around Bianca,Touko, or Touya. They know him the most so they’re the ones he feels most comfortable with when it comes to expressing most emotions.
As a kid, Cheren had bad asthma to the point that he usually had to have an inhaler. Luckily, his symptoms got better as he got older, but at times it can act up when he least expects it. This usually happens when he’s under a lot of stress or when his allergies have come into play. Though his allergies tend to happen in early spring.
Cheren isn’t exactly the religious type. Growing up, his mother did raise him to believe in Acreus as the creator of Pokemon, but as most children go through at some point of their lives, he started questioning once he found books and stories about other religions having to do with Mew and the weirdos who believed in Ditto. He eventually just made the choice to be Agnostic as he wasn’t sure which theory he actually believed or accepted because they all had valid points to him. Though if his mother asks, it’s Acreus. She pounded that into his skull….even if she’s an accepting soul.
On accident, Cheren found out he’s allergic to peanuts. His parents were suspicious since his father was allergic, but never took the time find out until they got that fateful call from daycare that he had to be rushed to the hospital. Why? Because the boy got a hold of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from one of his childhood friends and he never had one because protective/worried parents! His symptom usually includes the itchiness of the mouth and throat, short breath, and swelling of his throat. Basically, if he isn’t careful, he could die if not treated. He doesn’t really let most people know about the allergy and just tries to stay away from them in general.
It probably comes as no surprise since he’s a normal type expert, but Cheren has a bit of a fear towards ghost Pokemon. He never really understood why such a type of pokemon should exist and just wondered if they were really just dead Pokemon. The thoughts just really bothered and he’s always had a fear, even as a child.
Cheren tries to stay away from drinking just because he has a low alcohol tolerance that leads to him blacking out, though it does make him a bit looser around people. However, it also makes him more of a horny drunk as he gives into his desires a lot easier as he has less restraint. One can easily tell as he gets a bit more touchy feely which is completely opposite of his normal self that’s against PDA. But if he’s drunk, this rule goes completely out the window. Really, drunk Cheren is just prone to personality shift.
Though he trained under Lenora, Cheren is a secret fanboy of Whitney. She was one of the first Normal type gym leaders after all and he respects her for having a Pokemon that can easily defeat ghost types and is a giant powerhouse.
While training under Lenora, Cheren grew to finding himself drawn to the giant library. Eventually, Lenora gave him official access to it once he finally took over her position of giving out the Basic Badge while she took to looking after the museum. He tends to visit Nacrene a lot when days were slow just to go for the library as he can lost in there for hours
Cheren isn’t really the type set on revenge. There are things people have said and done that has made him hate them to an extent, but his mother always told him violence was never the answer to anything. Instead he just hold grudges, varying on different levels based on the person and what they did. He does learn to get over them unless it was a life changing matter…then he rather just holds it against them, but this still won’t cause him to act out against them. If anything, he’ll act more guarded because more than likely his trust in them has been broken.
Cheren hates the cold. He hates it pretty much with a passion that he still wonders why his birthday has to be in the dead of winter? But what more, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep himself warm and tough if he has to.
This is probably something very noticeable with Cheren, but usually whenever he’s nervous he tends to fiddle with his tie as if he needs to straighten it or tighten it. Of course, he’s OCD so that thing is hardly ever out of line.
Cheren has one of each out of the Stoutland family line. He might have just a tiny bit of favoritism towards the Pokemon line….slightly. Mainly because his Stoutland was the first Pokemon he caught on his own. He eventually got another Lillipup from Lenora just to test his ability of being a trainer that could work with Normal Types. That one eventually evolved into a Herdier, which he ended up growing closest with and is his most common companion. Because of this, he caught another Lillipup so new trainers wouldn’t have to face the two powerful Pokemon.
Cheren doesn’t rely as much on sarcasm as he did as a kid. Instead, he has put most of it behind him, usually when he’s with those that’s close to him like the Unova crew. Instead, he comes off rather blunt but it can’t be helped. With those he isn’t close with, his sarcasm seems to come back, but not as strong as it used to be. He just feels it as a need to keep people at a distance, but the strong ones can easily break this if their persistent.
From the beginning, Cheren had a hard time displaying any type of love and affection. He was a child that rarely gave his parents hugs or kissing, but accepted them fully. Typically, he shied away from the feeling as much as possible which came back to haunt him when he was told he wasn’t giving his own Pokemon the right amount of love. With time, he’s slowly coming out of that shell as he will give his Pokemon lots of affection now, of course most people can’t be around. He’s also beginning to learn how to display it with people.
Cheren isn’t the one to get completely angered. He’s easily annoyed just because everyone can’t see things the way he does, but he knows that isn’t possible in ANYONE’S life. Of course when he is angered, he usually becomes snappish and bitter.
Cheren usually tries to wear his contacts everyday except for those very long nights where he stays up doing work into the wee hours. So then he substitutes for glasses the following day in order to give his eyes a rest. Otherwise, he tries to stay FAR away from his glasses.
