Backstory
Dr. Joshua Strongbear Sweet grew up straddling two worlds, his African-American father taught him discipline and strength, while his Native American mother taught him the importance of stories, traditions, and listening to the earth. This balance shaped him into a man who could break bones and mend them, sometimes in the same day.
He served as a combat medic, patching up soldiers under fire and learning to stay calm in the most chaotic situations. After the war, he joined the Atlantis expedition, where he not only saved lives but also fell in love with uncovering history. He collected some arrowheads, feathers and little statues, journals, and stories from every culture he encountered, building a quiet personal museum of memory and meaning.
Now, Sweet works as a doctor in a normal hospital, but the call of adventure never really left him. He still keeps a packed travel bag in his closet “just in case” and is known to disappear on long weekends for hiking trips, archaeological digs, or cultural festivals.
Sweet secretly keeps a journal of every patient he’s ever treated, not just their symptoms, but their stories. He believes that understanding people’s histories helps heal them better. Sometimes, when he’s alone, he rereads those pages and wonders if he’s meant to be just a doctor… or if the world still has more for him to discover.
"Oh you are just loving this aren't you? Go ahead you can let out a small victory dance at your win." She was only mildly teasing since she wasn't that upset by losing but a bit flustered at how she was so close yet still lost because of this one puzzle piece. "This game is more difficult than I thought, and mind you I can be rather good at most board games."
Margo glanced up at his direction realized that it would be impossible to stay annoyed for long at how he was smiling giving her a soft nudge against her arm only made her roll her eyes playfully. "That's quite the strategy that helps in your favor. I guess I have to respect that about you skill set, those hands of yours are more multi talented than I thought." Jist as she said that her face flushed and even further when he admitted to wanting to get close to her. Was he just flirting or being playful? Maybe it was both yet she certainly wasn't complaining.
She honestly tried to focus on the game and what he was instructing her to do but between his closeness, his deep voice and his hands, it was proving a bit difficult. She sighed with a grin appearing on her face as she glanced up at him. "Untangling this puzzle definitely seems harder. I could say that the cases I've cracked are more simple even it most can be challenging. Yet if you give me the chance I will figure this puzzle out and won't go down without at least a one win tonight." She playfully replied.
Joshua laughed under his breath, shaking his head and proceeded to tease. "Oh, you're one of those people." There was nothing but fond amusement in his voice. "The kind who would rather lose ten times than let someone hand them the answer." He folded his arms across his chest, making no move to touch another puzzle piece. "Alright. You've got my word. No more rescuing the puzzle unless you wave the white flag." A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Besides, I think watching you work through it is half the fun."
"It reminds me of medicine, actually. You can stare at something for an hour and swear the answer isn't there, then you shift your perspective by an inch and suddenly everything clicks into place." He nodded toward the scattered pieces. "I like puzzles, it's like a way to practice not overthinking things, and just focus on the whole picture as the guide."
His smile softened as he looked at her. "I do have to admit something, though. You're making it awfully difficult for me to concentrate on this." A quiet chuckle escaped him. "You get this determined look when you're trying to solve something, and it's... attractive." He scratched at his beard with an embarrassed little smile. "So if you catch me looking at you instead of the puzzle, I'm afraid that's entirely your fault."
[ puzzle ] sender helps receiver solve/put together a puzzle
Her face pressed against her palm as she was struggling with the last piece of the puzzle. This game seemed easier at first as she manages to get some connections together but with a small pout her face was narrowed in concentration. "I don't wanna sound like a sore loser but, this is getting difficult." When Joshua came by next to her to solve the puzzle for her lips were a thin line before looking over to him. "Okay first of all, didn't ask for you to help me. I could've figured it out." She said in a teasing manner not really upset but had a amused uet frustrated expression. "Let me guess, you played this game before haven't you?"
Joshua let out a low chuckle, folding his arms as he looked down at the puzzle instead of celebrating his small victory. "Mm. I noticed you were about three minutes away from declaring war on that last piece, so I figured I'd intervene before innocent cardboard got hurt."
He glanced sideways at her, the smile softening just enough to be genuine. "And for the record no, I haven't played this one before. I just spend my days putting people back together. Turns out that teaches you to recognize how things are supposed to fit." His shoulder nudged hers lightly. "Though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking for an excuse to stand a little closer to you."
Joshua reached over, hovering his finger above two pieces without actually touching them. "What do you think? Try that edge there... and rotate this one once." He looked back at her with an amused tilt of his head. "So tell me, what's harder? Untangling this puzzle... or cracking one of your cases? I imagine the type of puzzles you deal with don't come with a picture on the front of the box."
Dr. Joshua Strongbear Sweet
Emergency Medicine
Attending Physician
But, if his badge is for an expedition, it reads:
DR. JOSHUA STRONGBEAR SWEET
Chief Medical Officer
Expedition Medical Team
Some extra details:
The plastic is scratched from years of use.
There's a faded blood type sticker on the back: O+
It's in a small cedar-colored leather badge reel, which is a subtle nod to his heritage and love of handcrafted things.
He's the type to clip a tiny penlight onto his lanyard because he uses it constantly.
Someone has stuck a tiny teddy bear sticker on the back of the badge after nicknaming him "Dr. Bear." He pretends to be mildly annoyed by it but has never taken it off
"I don't think medicine takes a vacation in July. I always notice that heat injuries climb, dehydration sneaks up on people, fireworks keep emergency rooms busier than anyone would like, and every summer I'm reminded how quickly a perfectly good day can become a medical emergency."
"Drink your water, wear sunscreen, and for the love of all things healthy, don't tell me you've only had three energy drinks and called that hydration."
"Wow, doc. I have to explain rhetorical questions to you? I thought you medical people were smart." Was this a simple trick to make Ilyas feel intelligent and good about himself? Wasn't working.
"I'm not too fond of bears, hence my reaction." There was the slightest of snorts - or maybe it was a laugh. "Not all that fond of people either. Explains a lot, doesn't it? Good thing you're not a head doctor."
"Fair enough. Guess I walked right into that one." Joshua's grin lingered, easy and unbothered. "Lucky for both of us, I patch up broken bones, not bruised egos."
He noticed the snort, however small it was, and counted it as a victory. If letting Ilyas score a point meant hearing him laugh instead of watching him retreat into himself, Joshua was more than willing to play the fool now and then.
"Truth be told, I've always felt connected to bears. Big, stubborn, happiest out in the wild, and usually misunderstood before anyone bothers getting close enough to know 'em."
He shrugged one broad shoulder, his voice still light. "Maybe that's why I don't mind being compared to one. Now- what is a head doctor?"
i think people assume healing always looks like something soft.
clean sheets. quiet rooms. steady hands.
but sometimes it looks like holding pressure on a wound while someone is still screaming, and telling them “hey, stay with me” like your voice can anchor them back into their body.
sometimes it looks like mud on your boots and blood on your sleeves and still choosing to be gentle anyway.
Laughing with his whole chest. Hands covered in tiny scars from years of carving and medicine. Always carrying extra medical supplies "just in case." Smelling like cedar, soap, and campfire smoke. Sitting on a porch quietly sharpening a carving knife. Remembering everyone's name. Looking up whenever birds fly overhead. Picking the biggest chair in the room without realizing it. Quietly fixing something that's broken without being asked. Sleeping like a rock after a sixteen-hour shift.
