Nocturne in Black and Gold, The Falling Rocket - James Abbot Whistler (1875)
Okay, so this painting has a whole bunch of controversy surrounding it. Whistler painted this as a slightly abstracted view of a fireworks show in London, and Whistler also wanted to link his abstraction to abstraction in music, hence “Nocturne”.
But then, England’s most famous art critic pretty much told everyone that his work was shit, asking how an artist could “demand 200 guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face"
