Since my little brother’s passing 10 months ago, I have held out hope to see him again in my dream life. He appeared last night for the first time, in a fairly atypical fashion. While in real life he was very handy with tools and tinkering, he was never that interested in activities that required self-propulsion on wheels. I had to convince him that posing on a skateboard was a fun thing to do. But in my dream he was popping wheelies on a vintage bike that my parents had held onto in this dream world. His favourite thing in the world was to crack jokes, and enjoy the company of others who liked to laugh along with him. This time of year will be bittersweet forevermore. While December 18 is my birthday, December 21 is the birthday of my little brother Michael, who would have turned 53 this year. I will always think of his ready smile and lighthearted humour. His eagerness to please and to make everyone feel comfortable and included. The tributes that poured forth at his funeral this year, from his coworkers, customers and community, summed up all the love he offered to everyone he met. Michael, you will forever be in our hearts.
