Chapter 3
Louis never forgot a promise and he definitely was not going to forget Zayn’s promise from the previous night. With no shame, he opened Zayn’s door and wandered in. He found Zayn sleeping. Like the usual.
“Wakey wakey Zayny boy.” Louis yelled jumping on top of him.
“Lewis!” Zayn yelled.
“It’s Louis.” Louis said cuddling with Zayn.
He groaned inwardly. His legs were aching. Not only did he run two blocks last night, he was learning basic dance steps until a quarter to eight. He was tired.
“Why are you here?” Zayn mumbled opening up his eyes to a very happy looking blue eyed white boy.
“You said we would hang out in the morning and well it’s the morning.” Louis said animated.
“I swear to god, you’re a five year old.”
“Once a kid at heart, always a kid at heart. I have a perfect bro date planned.” Louis smiled happily.
Zayn rolled his eyes. Louis was definitely something else.
When Zayn didn’t answer, the blue eyed took up the chance to recite the plans, “breakfast at that café; the one that’s three blocks away. While we eat you tell me where you ran off to last night and didn’t return home until nine. Then we get breakfast for the boys and we’re going to watch movies all day in your flat and make Haz cook. Perfect huh? I’m a great planner.”
“I thought we were only hanging out in the morning.” Zayn said slowly blinking his eyes before reaching for his glasses on the side table.
“Yeah, but since we’re on break and all of us do nothing I thought we could just watch movies all day. Bro bonding time you know.”
“Lou?” Zayn questioned.
Lou hummed in response.
“How long have we been in this band?”
“Four years.” Louis said immediately, “See I know my dates.”
“We see each other on a daily basis, how much bonding do we need?” Zayn asked stating the obvious.
“I’m the leader, I make the decisions around here.” Louis said as Zayn rolled out of bed to get ready for the day with Louis.
The two eldest of the five boys of the band shared a nice breakfast at the café with small conversations. It was nice and relaxing and something Zayn always looked forward to. He loved Louis. He kept his life interesting and was just fun to go out for casual breakfasts. Maybe it was his sass or his leader persona – whatever it was, Zayn loved it.
“So where’d you go last night?” Lou asked after taking a sip of his tea.
Zayn tensed up.
“For a walk like I said.” Zayn answered after a moment to think what he had told Louis yesterday.
“Almost a three hour walk? Zayn you could’ve been adultnapped!” Louis burst.
“Really Lou?” Zayn laughed, “I just wanted to walk around really. And what have I said about you looking through your peephole?”
“That I shouldn’t do it. But I feel very protective of you and you know Zayn.” Louis mumbled looking at Zayn in the eyes.
Zayn sighed knowing it was true. Zayn went through a rough patch and ever since that Louis had always been super protective of him. Maybe that was the reason the two grew even closer than ever.
“Are you doing anything stupid again?” Louis asked seriously.
“No. I would never. Lou, it was just after the breakup I got funky. I’m back to normal again, I promise.” Zayn replied honestly.
“Cross your heart?”
Zayn demonstrated crossing his heart, “Yah Lou.”
“Good. Now lets get to your place. We have movies to watch and bro bonding. Haz texted me saying they’re already there and waiting for breakfast.”
“Why my house again, Tommo?” Zayn asked putting on his sunglasses.
“Have you seen how freaking cool your television is? Plus you always have the best food.”
“True.” Zayn said as the duo walked down the three blocks to reach their apartment complex.
They passed Aarti’s studio on the way. Zayn looked through the windows to see her dancing with a group of what seemed like six-seven year olds. The smile on her face immediately brought a smile upon his face.
“We bring food.” Louis yelled as the duo entered Zayn’s flat.
The other three puzzle pieces ran towards the door.
“Single file line people. This is not a concert.” Louis smarted off.
The four boys rolled their eyes at his comment and lined up. Niall first with Liam and Harry behind him.
“Two things of french toast, waffles, and egg benedict for me right?” Niall asked running towards them.
“There you go Irish.” Zayn said handing him the brown bag he was holding – all that contents were designated for Niall’s stomach.
“Hell yeah. A whole bag of food for me.” Niall said happily before walking off to Zayn’s living room.
“A fluffly white vegetable omelet for me kind sir.” Liam said sweetly.
Zayn handed him his box of food.
“Just give me anything. I’m famished.” Harry growled taking the remaining food from Zayn’s hand.
The five at and sat around Zayn’s living room-watching movies after movies all day. It was nice. There wasn’t much talking among the five. Each of them were in their own little world. Zayn was thinking about dancing. Surprisingly he liked dance classes. He was reluctant on mimicking some of the steps Aarti was teaching him. But with his eyes closed he was able to. It was nice and he actually enjoyed it. It wasn’t like the time where tour choreographers would yell at him for not getting a move right. Aarti wasn’t like that and he liked that. She was patient. She understood that he wasn’t the best dancer out there but instead of ridiculing him or taunting about him, she was teaching him – something every dancer should do.
Zayn eyed the clock countless times during the movie marathon. He wanted it to be a quarter to six so he could go to dance lessons.
“Why do you keep staring at the clock?” Liam asked once the movie was done.
“I’m hungry.” Niall piped in.
“What are we eating?” Louis asked.
“Grilled cheese.” Harry said getting up and dragging Niall in the kitchen with him. Whenever Harry cooked when the boys hung out, Niall was his helper. Well Harry never initiated it but Niall being a gentlemen thought a cook should always have an assistant.
“No reason.” Zayn shrugged finally answering Liam’s question.
Louis looked up noticing there were a few minutes left until a quarter to six.
“Walk?” Louis asked.
Zayn nodded reluctantly.
“Go. I’ll handle them.”
Zayn stood up to give his best friend a hug before reciprocating the act with his other best friend.
Zayn ran to his room to put on a pair of sweats and a comfy sweater before dodging out of his door with a pair of converse and socks.
“Where’s he going?” Liam asked.
“I don’t know.” Louis replied looking at Liam.
“Louis, remember last time.” Liam reminded wearily
“He’s better now.”
Zayn sped down through the chilly weather completely erasing the thought of how messy his flat would be when he returned later that night. He ignored the rumbling in his stomach as the four boys in his flat devoured Harry Styles grilled cheese featuring Niall Horan. He forgot about everything and smiled genuinely as he opened the door to the studio.
“You’re right on time Future Happy Feet.” Aarti smiled putting down her file and leading the way up to the studio on the second floor.
Chapter 2
“Where do you think you’re off to?” Louis sneered from the hallway.
It was a quarter to six and Zayn decided it would be perfect to arrive just on time.
“Do you always have to stare out of your peep hole when you see me leaving then come out?” Zayn sighed.
“Being the leader of this band, it’s my duty.” Louis said in a matter of a fact tone.
Zayn rolled his eyes, “I’m going for a walk.”
If he told the guys he was getting dance lessons, he would surely get snide comments and surely Zayn didn’t want that.
“It’s cold outside.” Louis whined, “Come hang out with me.”
“Louis, leave me alone.” Zayn said eyeing his watch, thirteen minutes till six, “I really want to go for a walk.”
“Fine. I’ll come too. I hate being stuck in this house all day.”
Zayn’s eyes widened. Louis was sometimes way too much to handle.
“Niall’s at his flat playing footie, he’s loosing. You could totally own him.” Zayn said thinking of the quickest thing.
Louis squinted his eyes and sighing, “You just hate me, don’t you. Niall is at a pub with his friends. I have none.”
“Lewis, shut up.” Zayn hissed noticing it was ten minutes till six. He could always make a run for it and get there right on time.
“Hey guys.” Harry said piping his head in, “Lou I bring Japenese. Z, You can join us if you want.” Harry said sweetly.
“Thank you.” Zayn mumbled in his breath before sprinting to the doors exiting the building. As he ran he shot Louis a quick “I’ll hang out with you tomorrow morning, promise.”
The two brown haired white boys just stared at Zayn and went into their flat to enjoy a nice Japanese meal.
Zayn hated to run. He could’ve easily just told Aarti that his band mate was being overly dramatic. But the thing was, Zayn didn’t want to. He wanted to be on time for at least one thing. He was usually the last one at everything – eating, waking up, and getting ready. He just wanted to do something right for once. And he chose that with being on time tonight.
After two blocks of running and an imaginary bucket filled with sweat, Zayn was positive that was the most he ran in twenty-one years. He was proud of himself and his sweat was proof. Panting he opened the door leading him inside Aarti’s studio. Black walls surrounded the area where a small desk area with a computer sat on the left. A wall covered with names of the attendes of the studios with pictures hung on the wall adjacent, a case of stairs towards the back of the room and a glass door leading to what Zayn believed as the studio where he watched the olive girl dance on numerous occasions on the right. A minute till six, he made it.
“Ah, right on time Kind sir.” Aarti said appearing from the glass door on the right.
“I like to be punctual.” Zayn said with a goofy smile.
“Seems like you came from running a marathon. You look out of shape.” She said bluntly.
“Well aren’t you an honest goose.” He teased.
The two laughed softly at the olive boy’s comment. It was nice.
“So, first things first, new students or any students for the most write their name on the wall over there.” Aarti said pointing to the adjacent wall, “There’s chalk in the holder. We’ll take a picture later to plaster.”
“Do you think I’m six or something?” Zayn asked with a funny face.
“Nope. Go write your name on the wall happy feet.”
Zayn let out a chuckle and dragged across to the wall. He picked up a piece of chalk and turned to Aarti who had her hands crossed. She nodded her head telling him to continue. Zayn decided to write ‘Z. – Future Happy Feet’ and drew a pair of penguin feet on the bottom before placing the chalk where it belonged and walking back to his former position.
“Wow I’m a hundred now.” Aarti mumbled dryly.
Zayn rolled his eyes as Aarti began to open the right door.
“This is the studio. You know that because you watch me dance quite a bit.”
Zayn looked around. The walls were plastered with mirrors and the floor shiny. He felt self-conscious and the paneled windows didn’t help. Any one would find out he was taking dance lessons.
“Erm, is there another room where there isn’t a window. I’m self conscious.” Zayn mumbled shyly.
“Yeah, there’s one upstairs. It’s actually a bit bigger. We could go there.”
Zayn nodded gratefully as Aarti led the way upstairs. So that’s what the staircase led too.
She was right; the studio upstairs was more spacious. It was nice and there wouldn’t be peeping toms who would look through.
Aarti pulled her hair up in a bun and turned on the music with the control.
“So, I just want to see how you dance, so do anything.”
“I really can’t dance. Can we just start from the beginning?” Zayn asked.
“Who’s the teacher, me or you?” the twenty one year old dancer asked once the music was paused.
“You.” Future Happy Feet mumbled.
“Dance.” She said turning the music back on again.
“Wait. I have a question.”
“Yes Questionnaire Q.” the music was paused once more.
“Can you play like something more modern? I don’t know if I’ll be able to show you what I know when there’s an orchestra playing.”
Aarti sighed and rolled her eyes playfully skipping through the tracks until an upbeat song came on, “Happy?”
Zayn nodded.
“Dance.” She motioned as she sat down against the wall.
“Don’t laugh.”
“Shut up and dance.”
He was way to self-conscious. It was absolutely adorable in the tiny olive’s eyes.
Zayn shut his eyes and began to sway his hips and dance. Some of the moves were from the tour, the others just rotating his hip and moving his arms. Being from an Asian country where dancing was prominent, he decided to mimic bhangra steps – the steps he was forced into dancing at brown events back home. It took his best to suck in his pride and dance but he danced. Aarti enjoyed every bit of it. She saw that he was conscious; she saw that he was shy about dancing. And that’s what made it even better. A happy smile formed on her face as he mimicked bhangra steps – she loved bhangra so much. She saw the potential in him and she was positive that he would definitely become Happy Feet by the end of the twenty-one days.
She cut the music and stood up.
“Okay sad feet, let’s start with the basics.”
The music was turned on once more now to soft melodic music that wasn’t modern nor old. It was just the perfect tune to teach with. She used it with all the beginners. The dance class went on while the London streets never grew tired, Japanese food still being eaten in the flat across Zayns, all whilst an Irish lad drank away pints at a pub.
Prologue/ Chapter 1
Zayn Malik knew it was an absolute horrible idea to spend his first day of his vacation walking the streets of London. People always found out about him, no matter how he looked. All he wanted when he stepped out at that October afternoon was a cuppa and sandwich from the local bakery and a glimpse of the dancer he always saw whenever he was out. The studio dancers movements always made Zayn smile no matter how crap his day was. He looked forward to coming on the bustling streets whenever he did.
Zayn shielded his face from the gusty winds and the fans as he walked down the road quickly with her cuppa. As he neared the studio his pace slowed down and he began to watch the girl through the windows dance. Even though there was no sound radiating due to the windows, Zayn found himself enjoying the current routine she was dancing too. Her body seemed to flow to whatever was playing inside the studio and that’s what made Zayn happy. He spent a good few minutes watching her dance and enjoying the fact the fans had lost him.
Aarti Amin spent her whole days at her studio. It was her home. She on occasions noticed a familiar boy who would watch her dance through the windows but never said anything. Today was different. The second she turned a bit, her eyes locked with his. She smiled a bit. Zayn froze on spot. He didn’t want to seem like a stalker. Avoiding her gaze he began move along the streets but Aarti had other plans. She ran out to the front door and thought of a way to approach him. A way of talking to him popped up in her head a few seconds later.
“That was contemporary dancing what you watched today. The week before it was Classical.” She called out, rubbing her hands to warm her up.
“Excuse me?” Zayn said turning around.
“Types of dances.”
“Oh.”
“Specific reason why you muster along the windows and watch me dance?” she asked, curiosity getting the best of her.
Zayn shrugged, “it fascinates me.”
“I’m glad. Are you a dancer? Other dancers get fascinated easily by others dancing.”
“I can’t dance to save my life. Therefore I watch.”
“Like a stalker.” Aarti mumbled to herself.
Zayn smiled small.
“I highly doubt that you can’t dance. Everyone is born a dancer.” Aarti said in a matter of a fact tone.
“Is that so?” Zayn smirked.
“Duh. I’m a dancer. Dancers know best.”
“Well Miss. Dancer, this boy isn’t Happy Feet.”
Aarti giggled at his reference. An idea popped into her head.
“I can get that dancer to come out.” Aarti stated.
“How so?”
“I teach kids how to dance. You seem easy to teach.”
“I’m twenty-one, its too late to learn how to do something.”
“Oh hey, that’s how old I am but if you can develop a habit in twenty one days, I’m sure I can teach you how to dance in twenty one days.”
“Is that a done deal Miss Dancer?” Zayn said cocking his eyebrows.
“I’m not spitting on my hand and shaking hands with you, if that what you’re trying to ensue. Six tomorrow evening in sweats, t-shirt, and of course a smile.”
Zayn smiled, “Tomorrow teach.”
Aarti returned the smile as she walked into the studio. Her movements became more flow full and her routine had much more energy in it as she repeated the moves over and over again. She couldn’t fathom why she wanted to teach this guy how to dance, what had gotten in her mind, but one thing she did know was that she was glad she asked.
