Doing a comparative study on women in Taoism, Islam, and Christianity. Theology is so fascinating!!
i’m like scared to do squats at home (and push ups) because i don’t really know proper form... do you have any tips?
HELL YEAH I DO!
so the thing about bodyweight exercises is that, for a beginner, you may need to start out with easier forms of the exercise. for pushups you can start with the anchor point being your knees rather than your toes (cutting out a decent portion of your leg weight, lifting less weight while you build up strength). for squats this really boils down to number of reps.
here’s some visual aides:
squats:
a few points of importance:
see how he keeps his feet slightly wider than shoulderwidth apart and keeps them planted flat on the ground throughout the exercise
use full range of motion- squat all the way down and return to a standing position during each rep
this is a good pace actually- do not rush squats, and settle into the motion, keeping your bodily integrity. if it feels too easy at this pace, give it a few reps- you’ll feel the burn
last thing- his arms. they go straight out to keep balance as his center of gravity (lower torso and butt) dip behind his feet a little. this is also helpful because propping your arms against your legs or doing anything too fancy with them might throw off your balance/form.
pushups:
okay, if you’re a beginner, you may not be able to go this low during each rep, but that’s okay. you can work up to it.
notice how he’s keeping his back relatively straight (butt is up a little, but he’s holding pretty steady regardless). you should feel your core engage in keeping your body straight.
his hands are planted shoulderwidth apart, and notice his scapula on his back- they are retracted together. this basically means that he is holding his shoulders steady and his upper back aligned to make sure that the chest/shoulder/tricep muscles specific to the exercise are being isolated properly.
i highly recommend having a partner spot your form- and if you don’t have somebody to do that i also recommend having a mirror set up so you can watch your form.
final note: this depends on your goals with these exercises. if you are planning on building bodily integrity (being able to do these exercises at bodyweight for prolonged reps) or strength training (working up to squatting/pressing *more than* bodyweight).
if you want to work on integrity/endurance- work until the set number of reps becomes easy, then increase the number of reps while still maintaining good form.
if you want to work on strength training- gradually work up to the point that you can squat holding a weight, or do pushups with a weight on your back (backpack recommended- dropping loose plates/weights/heavy things on your fingers is v. painful i nearly broke my hand with a couple of 25 plates once)
anyway, hope that helps! if you want advice on any other bodyweight exercises to try out, let me know!

Can I ask you a question about my academic paper? I just read a book and now I have to answer a question and write a paper off of that and I'm having troubles starting my introduction.
of course, i'd be happy to help you start it off
what's type of paper is it (research, debate, etc)? 🙂

Narrated by Ibn Umar: The Prophet (PBUH) said: The keys of the unseen are five, and none knows them but Allah: (1) No one knows (the sex) what is in the womb but Allah; (2) No one knows what will happen tomorrow but Allah; (3) No one knows when it will rain but Allah; (4) No one knows in what land he will die but Allah (knows that); (5) And no one knows when the Hour will he established but Allah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7379 (Book 97, Hadith 9) Translated by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan
رفعت رأسي الى السماء و هي تمطر و سألتها: لمن تبكي اليوم؟
I raised my head to the raining sky and asked her: for whom do you cry today? (via suhyla)
Writing An Academic Essay (Tips & Advice)
1) Have a good great introduction - The most obvious make or break portion of your essay will be your thesis/opening statement. You want to sum up your entire essay in your intro so the reader will understand the basis of your essay beforehand. An introduction can range from one sentence to a whole paragraph- use what works best for your paper!
2) Transitions - You want your reader to smoothly go from one paragraph to another. For example, if you’re writing about food and say, “There are many components of food that make it so appetizing, such as flavor, appearance, and scent,” you want to go on to break down these components. Explain it. Use transition words.
Flavor makes food appealing because…
For example, the colorful aspects of candy draw in people by…
The smell that complements a big, juicy burger captures one’s attention through…
3) Layer your paragraphs - You want to use parallel structure throughout your paper and write evenly. If you have an opening sentence, three details, and a concluding sentence for each paragraph, make sure you keep that pattern for the rest of your essay. It creates a rhythm for the reader to follow and makes your essay more readable.
4) Be concise - Eliminate everything you think your essay doesn’t really need. Avoid being repetitive. The person reading your essay will most likely grow bored if you say “For example…” a lot or if you keep bringing up the same points. A thesaurus is handy in cases like these!
5) Make your conclusion memorable - Your conclusion should be what you expect the reader to get out of the information you supplied. “These aspects are important because…” Sum up everything in a few points. Your conclusion should be a reworded version of your introduction, but with extra details and finality. If you connect things in your essay in the end, it’ll make the reader go “Hmm, I understand,’’ but do not add anything that wasn’t originally in your essay. Remember- be concise!
Happy essay writing, and if you need any help or have a question, feel free to shoot me an ask! This is just a few basics but I’m considering going deeper with this in a few upcoming posts. Stay tuned!
To all those who said we were overreacting about Trump: congratulations.
Those who complain about others taking politics “a little too personally” are fortunate these policies don’t affect them personally.
