waddled - walked like a duck The gander waddled aglong behind the sheep.

salutations - hello Salutation is Charlotte’s way to say hi.

dreadfully - bad or unpleasantly Charlotte is dreadfully near-sighted, which is unpleasant.

blunder - move clumsily as if unable to see The end was now near, and Pompey blundered into a false political position and an open quarrel with Caesar.

plunge - fall/jump suddenly from a place As she watched, the horses plunged down a dune, sending a spray of white sand into the dry air.

gloomily - dark Wilbur told Charlotte that her inheritance is miserable gloomily.

wit - knee intelligence Charlotte lives by her wit to survive in the wild.

lest - for fear Charlotte needs to be sharp, lest she goes hungry.

fierce - violent Wilbur thinks Charlotte is fierce because she hunts insects for food.

scheming - a clever and often dishonest plan to get something. You truly are an innocent caught in the politics of the Immortals and the scheming of deities.

Wilbur was looking for his mysterious friend, then he found out it was a fierce, brutal, and blood thirst friend. Wilbur knew very little about life, he didn’t even know he was going to be killed.

Charlotte’s Web - IV Loneliness

eaves - lower border of roof The rain is dripping steadily from the eaves of barn.

grazed - kettles eating grass in the field Rain fell on the backs of the sheep as they grazed in the meadow.

trench - a long narrow hole Wilbur planned to dig a trench that is long and narrow.

provender - dry food for domestic animal Provender is a dry food for Wilbur.

marmalade - a sweet jelly that contains pieces of fruits marmalade is a sweet jelly that contains pieces of fruits.

gloomily - not bright Wilbur was standing gloomily indoor where sun cannot reach.

groaned - make a deep sound Wilbur groaned because he is feeling lonely.

budge - make or cause to make the slightest movement. Wilbur was very upset and it didn’t budge when Lurvy was checking on him.

crept/creep - move slowly with the body close to the ground Templeton crept along the wall and disappear into a rat hole close to the ground.

stealthily - quiet and secret in order to avoid being noticed Stealthily, she moved the cup over the edge and spilled it on the floor beneath the table, like a cat.

cunning - getting what is wanted in a clever and often deceptive way Templeton’s tunnel is an example of his skill and cunning to get a secret way around everywhere.

dreary - causing unhappiness or sad feeling Raining days make Wilburn dreary and sad.

dejected - sad because of failure Wilbur was sobbing because he felt dejected.

cud - the food that an animal brings back up from its stomach into its mouth to be chewed again Cows likes to chew its cud from its own stomach over and over.

rattle - rapid succession of short sharp noises Cow occasionally makes rattle while chewing its own cud.

Wilbur feels lonely, begging for love and friendship but no response from any animal in the farm. Mr Zuckerman thought Wilbur was sick and forced medicine to Wilbur’s mouth. Later, Wilbur hears voice that wants to be his friend.

Charlotte’s Web - III Escape

perspiration - sweat Zuckerman’s barn was full of tired horses’ perspiration.

grease - an oily substance Axle needs grease to keep moving smoothly.

pigpen - a pen for pigs Wilbur lived in a pigpen at Zuckerman’s barn.

root up - to tear or dig up by the root Just like other pigs, Wilbur like to root up the grass and everything else in the ground.

sob - turf sob Sob is a type of grass.

prance - to walk or move in a proudly or vivid way The barn animals want Wilbur to prance like a proud animal.

twirl - to turn around and around quickly It is nice to see a dog chases its tail and swirl.

holler - shout cry loud The goose started hollering to tell Wilbur to run!

commotion - noisy excitment The cocker spaniel heard the commotion from the barn and Wilbur, ran out to join the chase.

mending - to make something usable again, repair/healing Mr. Zuckerman was mending a tool when he heard the commotion from the barn.

slops - waste water from a kitchen, bathroom, or Zuckerman feeds Wilbur slops.

stirred - move or caused to move Every animal on the farm stirred to see Wilbur.

pail - bucket Mr. Zuckerman had a pail of food walking towards Wilbur.

hind - situated on the back Wilbur’s hind legs was caught by the cocker spaniel.

dazed - stupefy, make someone unable to think or act properly Wilbur was dazed by the chase, he was confused where to go.

hullabaloo - very noisy and confused situation, upset and angry situation The chase on the barn was such a hullabaloo.

middlings - animal food Zuckerman turns wheat middlings into slops for Wilbur.

popover - breadroll Left over popover was part of Zuckerman’s dinner.

trough - Wilbur ate its food from trough.

Fern came to watch Wilbur quite often. Then a goose lured Wilbur to escape. Wilbur cannot handle the hullabaloo and fell for Mr. Zuckerman’s food trap, returned to pigpen.

Charlotte’s Web - II Wilbur

stroke - to rub gently in one direction Fern loved to stroke Wilbur’s back.

bib - drink Fern tied Wilbur’s bib on and held the bottle for him every morning.

grunted - guttural sound characteristic of a hog Wilbur loved to grunt and walk sleepily into the box.

snout - long nose of an animal Wilbur was poking the straw with his snout.

waded - to walk through water Wilbur waded in to the water with Fern before he found the water was too cold.

brook - a small stream Fern was playing in a brook.

oozy - exuding moisture The edge of the brook was sticky and oozy.

scraps - leftover food Wilbur started to grow and eat scraps of food in addition to milk.

holler - to call out loudly On the phone with Aunt Edith, who hollered for Uncle Homer to come for the call from Mr Arable.

Wilbur was getting big so Arable family moved him to a small yard under the apple tree with strawsso Wilbur can stay warm. Wilbur liked Fern and always followed her around, stiars and brook. As Wilbur is big enough to have scrap food, Mr. Arable sold it to Zuckerman’s barn for six dollars.

Charlotte’s Web - I Before Breakfast

runt - small/weak Wilbur was born runt, an extra small and weak one in the litter.

shriek - loud, high pitched voice Fern was shrieking when she knew about her father was about to kill the runt in the pig litter.

sopping -completely or thoroughly wet The rain is sopping everyone’s clothing.

weakling - the weak one The weakling is a runt, small and weak.

carton - box made of cardboard School supplies are usually packed in cartons.

wobbled - to move or proceed with an irregular rocking or staggering motion, or unsteadily and clumsily from side to side. The carton was bobbling because Wilbur was moving inside of it.

specimen - animal/plant collected as an example of particular kind of thing Avery called WIlbur a fine specimen of a pig as a sarcasm.

rid - save Fern’s dad called Fern’s action as trying to rid the world of injustice.

blissful - extremely happy Fern was quite blissful when she was taking care the big.

Summary - Fern save a runty pig from her father’s ax, and started bottle feeding the pig. Avery, Fer’s brother, wanted one but was refused. Fern named the runty pig Wilbur.

Look for how each paragraph develops the topic

NOT a summary of details

Put yourself in the author’s shoes

Always expressed as an infinitive verb

Common functions include: describe, explain, overview, undermining, support, contradict, refute, etc.

What the author likes & dislikes

Look at the adjectives/adverbs he uses

Use (-) and (+) symbols

Can be neutral/scholarly

Example:

I recently decided on taking GRE within three weeks on top of many duties. I am desperate, and start searching online resources for study material. This is one of good ones I found. Good tips for improving vocabulary from the video clip:

Start a "Verbal Journal".

Read scholarly article for 30 minutes a day.

Make flashcards for tougher words.

Memorize common roots, prefixes and suffixes.

Download GRE/vocabulary app online.

And that is what I am doing now.
