Sentence Break Down with KBO

There are two grammar points used here 로, 면서. 로 is used in many different ways; here with “난조로 자멸하다” 난조 means a rough time and 자멸하다 means to destroy oneself so with the grammar 로 here it shows a ‘method’. It shows that the way they are ‘destroying themselves’ is there the troubled times stated before the 난조. So the phrase “키움 장재영이 고질적 제구 난조로 자멸하다“ can be translated to “Kiwoom’s Jang Jae Yeong destroys himself through the trouble of his chronic poor ball control”.

The second grammar used is 면서 which is used to show to actions or events happen at the same time. So with "하면서 양 팀의 선발 맞대결은 일찌감치 마무리됐다" it can be easily translated to "while/as [__ action} the teams early showdown comes to an end" And altogether it becomes "Kiwoom’s Jang Jae Yeong destroys himself through the trouble of his chronic poor ball control while the teams' early showdown comes to an end" To make it more natural it can turn to "Kiwoom’s Jang Jae Yeong gets himself in trouble with his chronic poor ball control while the teams' early showdown comes to an end"

1사 후 김성윤을 기습번트로 내보낸 게 대량 실점의 씨앗이었다. 

Again there are 2 main grammars used here, 로, ㄴ 게. In the phrase "1사 후 김성윤을 기습번트로" 로 is being used to say how the next sections of the sentence aka next events came to be to it could be translated to "After 1 out, Kim Seong Yoon's sudden bunt was" or you could "After 1 out, through Kim Seong Yoon's sudden bunt".

Going to the next section “내보낸 게 대량 실점의 씨앗이었다.” We can see the grammar ㄴ 게 in the word 내보낸 게. ㄴ 게 is actually a shorthand version of a common grammar point 는/ㄴ 것이 which is a verb-> noun grammar, when spoken quickly the 것이 can sound like 게 instead so it is often shortened this way. This changes the verb 내보내다 from “to let out” to “thing that let out” or “letting out” so here we can see it is being used to help describe the noun at the end of the sentence 씨앗 or seed, taking out the things in I between for now 내보낸 게 씨앗이었다 can be translated to the seed that let out__ adding the middle back in “대량 실점의” means a great deal of lose points/ runs, together it becomes “ the seed that let out a great deal of runs.

And all together it becomes “After one out through Kim Seong Yoon’s sudden bunt was the seed that let out a great deal of runs” and making that sound more natural we can write it as “After one out Kim Seong Yoon’s Sudden Bunt was the seed to allow a great deal of runs.”

This sentence has a very interesting and not very commonly talked about grammar point of using a 아/어 verb ending in the middle of a sentence. It has many uses but here it is used to show a reason or cause of the next sequence of actions and/or events.

We can split this into two sections, the first will be "사구 1개와 볼넷 4개를 연거푸 허용한 장재영" which used the verb-> noun grammar again with 허용한 which is being used to alter the noun 장재영. This can be translated to "Jang Jae Yeong, who allowed 1 walk based on hitting another player and 4 walks based on balls..." As you can see "사구 1개와 볼넷 4개를 연거푸 허용한" which comes before the noun, 장재영, is used to describe it. The next section "장재영은 급기야 9번 김지찬의 머리를 맞혀 자동 퇴장됐다" can seem daunting at first but can also be broken into two parts "9번 김지찬의 머리를 맞혀" and "자동 퇴장됐다". Firstly 맞히다 means to hit so "9번 김지찬의 머리를 맞혀" is translated to "Hit 9th batter Kim Ji Chan in the head" 9번 being used to show what place Kim Ji Chan is in within the lineup (타선) "자동 퇴장됐다" simply means "automatically got sent off" adding it all together with 급기야, which means at last or after all, turns to "Jang Jae Yeong at last hit 9th batter Kim Ji Chan in the head automatically sending him off" Altogether it is "Jang Jae Yeong, who allowed 1 walk based on hitting another player and 4 walks based on balls, at last, hit 9th batter Kim Ji Chan in the head automatically sending him off" However you can change the 'at last' to "then' to should more natural making it: Jang Jae Yeong, who allowed 1 walk based on hitting another player and 4 walks based on balls, then hit 9th batter Kim Ji Chan in the head automatically sending him off.

급히 마운드에 오른 하영민마저 김현준에게 2타점 적시타를 얻어맞으며 키움은 1회에만 타자일순 6점을 헌납했다.

In this last sentence, there are two grammar points connecting three sections of this sentence. The first seen is 마저 which is used to say even or even though. It is always negative and often means this noun it's connected to is the last option. In the sentence "급히 마운드에 오른 하영민마저" it's used to show the meaning of "Even when/with Ha Yeong Min coming to the mound quickly".

The next grammar is 며 which is used the same way ad 면서 which was previously explained. Here we see "김현준에게 2타점 적시타를 얻어맞으며" without the grammar turns to "Kim Hyeon Jun hits 2 timely run hits" but with the grammar and it explains that the last section "키움은 1회에만 타자일순 6점을 헌납했다" is happening at the same time.

"키움은 1회에만 타자일순 6점을 헌납했다" translates to " Kiwoom allows the whole batting lineup to bat and 6 runs in only the first inning" so with adding the part beforehand it becomes "Kim Hyeon Jun hits 2 timely run hits while/ and Kiwoom allows the whole batting lineup to bat and 6 runs in only the first inning".

Finally adding all the parts together it becomes "Even when/with Ha Yeong Min coming to the mound quickly, Kim Hyeon Jun hits 2 timely run hits while/ and Kiwoom allows the whole batting lineup to bat and 6 runs in only the first inning"

Today we will be going through 송경모 기자's article and translating it. We will also find some key vocabulary, today's theme is baseball terms specifically, and some important grammar points!

Tomorrow I will be selecting 1 paragraph to do a sentence by sentence complete breakdown as well as sharing my notes over the full article to show how I tranlate.

삼성 라이온즈가 주말 동안 시즌 승률 4할에 복귀하며 탈꼴찌에 시동을 걸었다. 트레이드로 토종 에이스 최원태를 LG 트윈스에 내준 9위 키움 히어로즈는 승리 없이 3연전을 마치며 고개를 떨궜다.

During the weekend the Samsung Lions returned their winning rate to 40% & started to escape last place. 9th place Kiwoom Heroes, who lost the nation's ace to the LG Twins in a trade, finished 3 games with no wins and their head low.

Veteran Park Jeong Hyein responds to the cohesiveness of the driven batters who scored 9 runs early in the game, with 2 runs while completing a winning series with 2 wins and 1 draw. Through the 3 games, the gap between the teams decreased.

Samsung's lineup's fire didn't stop even in the 2nd inning. Ryu Ji Hyeok's right-handed hit with Kang Han Wul's 3-base run and the opponent's mistake caused 3 more runs.

마운드에선 백정현이 꾸준히 주자를 내보내면서도 위기관리 능력을 앞세워 5회까지 키움 타선을 무득점으로 묶었다. 6회 2점을 만회한 키움이 7회 삼성의 불펜 난조를 틈타 4점을 더 냈지만 더 이상의 추격은 없었다.전날 7대 2 승리로 시즌 승률 4할 고지를 수복한 삼성은 이날 승부까지 잡아내며 7월 18경기를 9승 1무 8패로 마쳤다.

Samsung, who through the previous day's win of 7-2 repaired their win rate to 40%, found a win this day ending July's 18 games with 9 wins, 1 draw, and 8 losses.

After Park Jeong Hyeon Kim Tae Hoon, who overcame crisis in the 6th inning with one ball, only after 2 outs in the 7th inning, got 4 batters out in a row bringing their own demise.

Grammar

대가를 톡톡히 치렀다- a phrase that literally means "to pay the cost/ price" However similar to the English phrase it means to suffer the consequences of an action

고도- this is used to add a new phrase tied closely with the first phrase. It does not have to be contradictory, here when they say "결과적으로 여유 있게 이기고도 남을 경기에 필승조 우규민까지 투입됐다." it can be translated to "even though they were winning" or "while they were winning with ease".

Even though they are winning with ease at the end of the game they put in fierce winner Wu Gyu Min. Kiwoom, who sent LG Choi Won Tae who has a 6-4 win ratio and 3.25 ERA, paid the price. In the previous 2 games, the starting pitcher was taken out early which was the flow that lead to the stream of losses. On the contrary, the batters including Lee Ju Hyeon hit 12 hits, however, this wasn't enough to reverse the early tilted game.

To start will add some vocabulary needed:

수비- Defense

Now we’ll go sentence by sentence and break it down~

“삼성 2루수 자리에 지각변동이 일어날 수 있을까.“

The grammar here is an important part to understanding. 을까 is used to ask or give an opinion on a topic, so to start out in the article it seems they are giving an opinion. Working backwards we see the phrase 지각변동이 일어날 수 있다, breaking it down to grammar and vocabulary we have: 지각변동이 일어나다, and ㄹ 수 있다. 일어나다 here is used different than is often seen, most know it as “to rise” or “to get up” but it can also mean “to occur” here combined with the grammar ㄹ 수 있다, to be able, it means something along the lines of “[is it] possible for a change of perception about _”

Looking at the first half of the sentence we see 삼성 2루수 자리에, which means “Samsung [lions] 2 baseman seat/spot” Together we can see it means “[is it] possible for a change in perception about The Samsung [lions] 2 baseman spot.”

“김지찬(22)이 수비로 애를 먹는 사이 김동진(27)이 힘을 내고 있다.”

Again the grammar is important to understand in this sentence so to start well quickly explain “은/는 사이(에)”. It is used to show two situations or actions in which the second clause is caused by or affected by the first. Now well start with 김지찬이 수비로 애를 먹는, 수비로 uses the 로 grammar which has many meanings, here it is showing what is “애를 먹다” therefor this part means “Kim Ji Chan is having a hard time with defense” .

Looking at the next part 김동진이 힘을 내고 있다, here we see the grammar 고 있다, which is similar to “ing” in English. 힘을 내다 is a harder phrase to translate naturally into English however 힘 means energy or strength and 내다 to make ___ rise or come out, together it literally translate to “__ makes energy come out” but its more often understood as “to have energy”. All together this section means “ Kim Dong Jin has energy and strength.”

All together it means “While Kim Ji Chan has issues/trouble with Defense Kim Dong Jin has the energy and strength.”

“그러나 김동진은 후배를 생각했다.”

This sentence is a bit simpler. To start 그러나 means ‘but’ or ‘nevertheless’ and 후배 is a junior. In Korean culture this can be someone younger or someone who has worked in your company/field for less time, the opposite being 선배. All together this means “Nevertheless, Kim Dong Jin thought of his junior.”

“삼성 2루수 자리에 지각변동이 일어날 수 있을까. 김지찬(22)이 수비로 애를 먹는 사이 김동진(27)이 힘을 내고 있다. 그러나 김동진은 후배를 생각했다.”

Putting it all together gets you: “ [Is it] possible for a change in perception about The Samsung [lions] 2 baseman spot. While Kim Ji Chan struggles with defense, Kim Dong Jin has the energy and strength. Nevertheless Kim Dong Jin thinks of his junior.”
