2:20am. Mental status: Iâm still catching up with my brain, itâs going terribly fast
i keep seeing posts about âhow to get addicted to studyingâ and i cant help but feel a bit frustrated. i am all for loving what youâre studying in school and being consistent to get the grade you want but i also feel like people have really just forgotten the importance of rest?? i am a student, i wouldnât say that i love what i study but i enjoy it and there is nothing more i want than to just lounge around and be a couch potato for this next week and a bit before i go back to school so that i feel energized enough to put my best foot forward next semester. if you want to study during the break, that is amazing and i am in awe of your discipline but for those of you who do not want to study and just want to relax, please do not feel guilty or like you arenât doing enough đ€
đ§żđ§żđ§ż manifesting we all ace the fuck outta our next exam đ§żđ§żđ§ż
oh yes please
Final exam is coming up so fast! I have to stay consistent and everything will work out fine!
Finals studying starts tonight. Napped after my classes, did requirements, went on meetings with org and MSC, and now going to take a break to wash up and have dinner before I full-on study.

My vibe for my first day on campus đ
I just finished all my class prep work!!
hello!!! Iâm here asking you guys for advice this time!! Iâm going back to school very soon and this will be the first school year where I have a part time job. I am so extremely nervous about how Iâm going to manage my time and Iâm worried about deadlines already. Do any of you have any advice from personal experience or advice passed on from people in your life? I am open to hearing just about anything and I would be so grateful for any advice anyone would be willing to pass on â€ïžâđ©č

Surviving college
I saw a really helpful post by @daisystudies about tips for college (link to post) and I felt inspired to share some things I learnt during my first year:
Commute will get easier - If you live close enough to your college, that you donât have to move there, but far enough for it to be a long commute, I promise itâs worth it and it gets easier. Make sure to research ways to make commuting cheaper especially for students (most countries offer long term tickets for cheaper).
Everyone is just as lost as you are - Not even the older students are much wiser trust me.Being confused and stressed is super normal! Itâs a big change, but youâll adapt and it will get easier.
Everybody is lonely and everyone wants to make friends - People do not want to be alone and they will want to talk to you. Everyone seeks a companion and they are opened to a conversation. If youâre not brave enough to start talking to strangers (thatâs okay) just try to look opened to talking to someone. Smile a bit, donât spend all of your time staring into your phone, take part in class. I promise people arenât as terrifying as they seem.
Professors who try to scare you are assholes and are not worth to stress over - I meet two types of professors: those who try to encourage students and those who are proud of their class being difficult. My very first lecture started with the professor listing reason why we donât deserve to be there, which was scary. I later realised that people like that are not worth my attention. I promise you will meet great professors who will feel like mentors and will help you.
Youâre largerly on your own - I know this sounds awful but stick with me for a second. In high school you are told all deadlines, reminded of important tasks and you get a very rigid schedule. In college itâs up to you to look up deadlines, find all necessary requirements and sign up for exams. This will be stressful at first but it also offers far more freedom and often allows you to do things on your own schedule.
Physical health and activity is way more important than you think - I beg you to move your body at least 3 times a week. Walk, do yoga, stretch, do sports, go to the gym - anything. Just make sure you donât neglect your body just because of a busy schedule. It can and will do more damage than you might think.
College social life is a bit over romanticised - This might be the covid era student in me speaking but I still feel itâs important to mention. It wonât be like you see in shows and movies. Doesnât mean itâs never fun⊠but still make sure not to expect the greatest years of your life. Best case scenario: youâll be pleasantly surprised.
Get a light laptop - this depends on what you study, but most majors do not need you to have an expensive computer. Itâs just better to have something to have all your notes on and a lot of classes are so fast paced itâs impossible to hand write without having to go back and fill in large amounts of information, which in turn takes a lot of extra time.
Your mental health is not worth sacrificing for good grades or even a finished degree - Please set your priorities right in the beginning. Your health is the most important thing you have. You can always live an amazing life without a degree but not without your health.
Halo Effect in School
I have benefitted so much from the Halo Effect and I always take advantage of it every semester. This is how it works.
The first day of class is for setting yourself up: The professors will introduce themselves and would expect students to do the same. Take advantage of it and introduce yourself, don't be shy, remember your academics is between you and your professor, not your classmates. Take advantage of the "any questions?" I do this all the time. I ask the nitty-gritty questions about the syllabus and I also introduce myself to the professor immediately after class.
Read ahead of the class and participate: I like to come prepared, I want to have an idea of what the professor will teach in class, and this allows me to engage in class and learn as much as I can. Professors like it when students show readiness and are willing to ask questions or give educated opinions.
Volunteer: Today I volunteered to read a paragraph in my Management Class. I raise my hands to ask questions or give my ideas and professors love it. They love it because they also want to please their students, they feel better when students participate. So far, four out of five of my professors know me by my name, and it's only been a week. On Wednesday, my Finance professor asked me to help a student set up his My Finance Lab, it could be little but I am a strong believer in compounding things. It is your atomic habits that become your character.
Stand out: I am the only Black girl in all my classes, if that isn't enough to make me quiet and be an observer but sometimes, you have to put yourself out there, not for your classmate's validation but to be seen by your professor, to develop a relationship with them so that you don't get terrified of asking questions, I never feel alone because I know the authority (my professors). Even if I am yet to make friends I know I would always have a conversation with my professor in each class and it makes me feel wanted, and welcomed like my opinions matter.
The effects: Professors delegate to you, they trust you, and they would seek your opinion on things, often times this is how professors pick their Teaching Assistants. But what does Halo Effect do? Based on your participation, your professors think you are a bright student, who has something to offer, they assume that your participation will be relevant in the workplace as well (recommendations). To you, the Halo Effect subconsciously makes you show up, study effectively, engage with the material, enjoy the class, and do well on your tests. You want to be in class because who knows what amazing conversations you would have. Also, there is a difference between involvement and cockiness, always raising your hands and saying irrelevant things won't get you anywhere, you'd only be a nuisance. With that said, go out and win.
i know that itâs only the start of august and no one wants to be thinking about going back to school because yuck but i thought that i would share something iâve been thinking about. in complete honesty, last school year was horrible and i almost cried thinking about it because i realized that it was so bad because of me and not because of my professors or my crazy schedule or lack of good friends. i made it bad. i would stress about midterms and assignments and then get them back and realize i did fine and i wouldnât have the energy to celebrate it because i wasted it all stressing about if i failed. and itâs just like,,, why do i do that to myself?? and i think that itâs so important to not spend our time worrying about the what if until/unless it actually happens because time is SOOO PRECIOUS and the time i spend crying over assignments could be spent asking for help to understand. i want this year to be better and i deserve a better year but that responsibility falls on me. itâs always easier said than done but really, donât fall victim to stress, ask for help, donât be afraid to make new friends, invest in your old ones, and trust yourself and believe in your potential to do well. life and school is already so hard and the last thing you need is to make it harder by doubting yourself and believing that every what if and every worst case scenario will actually happen. i donât want my next school year (and frankly the rest of my life) to be controlled by so much negative energy !!!!!
long time no see everyone!!!! this is a very candid post about my relationship with school. despite having a studyblr, i can admit that my relationship is definitely not the healthiest and thatâs something i really want improve đ«¶
okay, so here in california precautionary measures against COVID-19 have become increasingly intense. most schools have closed and are preparing to make the transition to âdistance learningâ aka online classes. this is a big change for many of us â but donât panic!
welcome to surviving online classes 101!
â
â self discipline
this is more of a warning than a tip. working from home means you will have to exercise a lot more self discipline. it can be a little bit boring or lonely at times. you cannot count on motivation from others (professors, classmates, friends, etc.), so you will have to learn some self discipline.Â
â create your own classroom
a good way to make the transition is to try and mimic the classroom setting as closely as possible. something that might be helpful is to set up a space designated for work. try to avoid the temptation to work in your bed or on the couch. that trains your brain to be alert in those places and makes it harder to relax/fall asleep. at least during online lectures, try and eliminate distractions that wouldnât be present in a regular classroom (like tv or netflix playing in the background, or having your phone out)
â dress for success!
dress in the way that makes you feel most productive. if youâre one of those people who usually rolls into class wearing sweats and still kills it, good for you! if youâre one of those people who needs to put on a full face of makeup to feel alive and ready for the day, do that! even at home!! i personally never wear makeup but if i try to be productive in pjs⊠disaster. iâve also found that cute workout gear makes me feel badass while still being comfy.
â create a schedule
now more than ever you need to figure out how to manage your time. you can use a planner, bujo, google calendar, the forest app, whatever. just make sure you keep track of things like
due dates and TIMES
exam dates
lecture times
hours spent studying
meals (pls eat 3 if possible)
water intake
sleep schedule
â pack your bag like you usually would
i know this probably sounds so dumb, but when youâre done working clean up after yourself. pack everything up like you would at school, to sort of signal to your brain that academic time is over for now. and then unpack and set up when youâre ready to get to work again. this is just another way to trick your brain into that school mindset while youâre stuck at home.
â donât overwork yourself
break up your studying into chunks. being cooped up all day can make us feel like weâre wasting time, but be sure to schedule breaks and reward yourself after a solid study session. iâm a big fan of the pomodoro method, and it can be customized really easily to allow for more or less study/rest time.Â
â maintain a healthy sleep schedule
now is the time to develop that healthy sleep schedule we all dream about. staring at a computer all day is exhausting and hard on the eyes and brain, so make sure to give them enough rest and time to recover each night. also, consider investing in glasses that block blue light, even if you donât usually use glasses. this will keep our eyes young lol.Â
â communicate with your teachers and classmates
most of us are making this transition to online learning together. any time you have questions, email your professor. reach out to your classmates at the beginning and exchange emails/phone numbers/social media so you can build a support system. if something goes wrong, screenshot it immediately and reach out to your professor. technology isnât perfect, and mistakes can happen, just communicate them.
â turn things in early
this is my biggest tip. when you are relying on online submissions for assignments and digital lectures, you always want to allow extra time to fix any errors you might encounter. your professor will also be much more willing to help you fix a problem two days before a deadline rather than two minutes before a deadline. eliminate that uncertainty by playing it safe with online submissions.Â
â
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!! YOU GOT THIS!! WE GOT THIS!!
How to Really Comprehend a Scientific Paper
**credit to my research advisor, sheâs an amazing mentor and I aspire to be just like her someday :)
Read the abstract. Write down what the paper says it is going to be about.
Read the introduction. Write down what the paper says it is looking to accomplish and how.
Read the conclusion. Write down what the paper actually did accomplish.
Go through and find all the pictures, graphs, or diagrams. Write notes explaining these images to yourself.
Read the whole paper start to finish. Write a summary of the paper as though you are explaining it to a layperson, and then another summary as though you are explaining it to a colleague.
Throughout all of the above steps:
If there are words you donât know google them and write down the definitions
If the paper defines a formula, law, variable, etc in a certain way write that down
If there are references to or recommendations of other literature write those down. After the last step if thereâs anything youâre uncertain about or would like more information on look to that list for further reading
things i learned during finals season because it was rough
start as early as you can, especially for subjects that are cumulative like calculus. you need to understand the basics before you can understand other concepts.
learn how to recognize when you need a break. are you struggling to focus? are you not really engaged with the work? are you actually retaining the information youâre learning?Â
donât get too discouraged if youâre not understanding things right away. yes, itâs annoying and frustrating but donât give up on it so quickly. if the answer key is provided, look at the answers/steps and try to understand why that answer is correct. give yourself a 5 minute break and try the problem again. practice makes perfect. youâre 100% capable of understanding it, even if it feels like you arenât.
if anyone says itâs easy, theyâre lying. everyone is struggling with something.
make your room somewhere where you want to study. light a candle if you need to, open a window, have a warm drink, make sure the lighting is good, wear comfortable clothes, etc.
take advantage of all of the resources available to you. youtube videos, practice quizzes, old tests, office hours, free tutoring if your school offers it, etc. there are so many resources available and there are so many people who are willing to help you succeed; but you have to approach them first.
after finishing yet another finals season (which was also rough) i thought i would add on to the list đȘđ€đȘŽâšđŠ
donât force yourself to be a early morning studier if your max productivity time is in the evening. waking up at 6AM wonât make a significant difference in your actual test results/exam experience, itâll just make you more tired. prioritize sleep so that your work period is as productive as possible.
donât talk to certain people about the test/class subject. some people are fantastic friends but make you more scared for the test. know who you can talk to without getting more nervous. itâs nothing against that person, just do what keeps you the most calm.
pomodoro doesnât always work the best. download an app like flipd where thereâs a stopwatch, and challenge yourself to stay focused for longer periods rather than waiting for 20 minutes to pass by.
make (or find) a good study playlist. time goes by a lot quicker <3
the study resources your professor provides are not the only resources available. search your class subject on google, keep scrolling (be persistent with this) and youâll find so much.
i keep forgetting i have a studyblr đ so here is a reblog of my post :)
Abnormal Study/Work Things that Actually Help Me
Scrolling through Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube, etc. for study vibes. Lots of people would say this is a waste of time, but getting in the mood to study significantly helps me. As someone that rarely has the motivation to do things and struggles with low-energy levels daily, seeing aesthetic pictures or watching study-with-me videos gives me the inspiration and motivation I need.Â
Multitasking is my best friend. If Iâm interested in what Iâm working on, this isnât always necessary, but usually, having multiple things to do at once is helpful. Jumping between similar assignments, working 20min on one long assignment or chore, then finishing a smaller one, then going back to that longer thing, etc. It helps me avoid burn-out and taking breaks that turn into just giving up.Â
On the subject of breaks, taking breaks isnât always the best for me. I know a lot of people rave about the pomodoro method, and while it works to help me get started on something, I eventually let go of that timer once Iâm in the groove of working. Taking a breakâ long or shortâ will usually just incentivise me to stop working altogether because that âbreakâ is sooo much better than working. I much prefer long hours or scheduled out work vs play times.Â
Having multiple drinks on my desk. This is another form of multitasking to me. Water is always a necessity, but juice, coffee, tea, etc. is a needed addition. Similar to chewing gum, it helps stabilize me and prevent burn-out since my brain has multiple forms of stimuli.Â
Long to-do lists. I will literally have 20-30 things on a to-do list typically. Sure, I donât always finish it all in a day, but writing out that to-do list helps get my mind organized and keeps me focused. Plus, it also helps to avoid procrastination. If I only write out 5-6 things, Iâd think âSure, I can wait to do those. Thereâs only a fewâ whereas 20-30 things pushes me to work as soon as possible.Â
A lot of people would disagree with how I work, or tell me that thereâs a better way, but these are just some things that work for me. Some of us are wired a bit differently, and thatâs perfectly fine. Do what works best for you.
How to survive finals
I just finished my first college finals and let me tell you I didnât have a good time. I did learn a few valuable lessons in my suffering and so here I come sharing them with you so you donât need to learn stuff the hard way.
Passing your finals isnât worth sacrificing your health -You may get carried away with anxiety and just go down the wrong path. You stop taking care of yourself, you promise yourself that the next study session will have breaks and you will take better care of youself next time. NO! You will take care of yourself now! You need to make your health a priority. Always. Bad health will ruin your life and might make your studies so much more difficult in the future. Keep yourself healthy and sane
Breaks arenât negotiable -It might seem like youâll get more done without breaks but youâre wrong (and you know it too). Your brain will not accept the information you give to it and all the time invested will not be worth it. With breaks you spend less time studying while learning more!
Start early -This one is more difficult than it seems and for some people it might be impossible. But if you can, itâll really help to get a head start. You might simply start a week early or study through the semester. Not seeing the materials for the first time before the exams helps significantly!
Keep your notes and materials somewhat organised -By the end of the finals month, I was drowning in disorganised papers, not being able to figure out where all my materials are. All my notes were useless because I just didnât know where they are. It sounds funny now but it wasnât funny then⊠Try to keep all your materials in folders at least.
Donât add too much to your to do list -Try to figure out how much you can actually get done in a day and then stick to that amount no matter how much work you have overall. You wonât be able to do insane amounts of work in a day and long ass to do list will only stress you out.
Reward yourself at the end of every intense study session -Working with no rewards will get way more exhausting way quicker. I recommend some fun activity as the best reward. I like to make time to play video games or watch something after every intense day
Move your body -I donât know how to make you understand that this one is one of the most important tips I can give you. PLEASE DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR BODY! Exam time at my college is over a month long and that really took a toll on my body. Make sure to walk, work out and stretch at least multiple times a week.
You need to sleep enough -If the importance of resting isnât enough for you as a reason on its own, then I have another: sleep is when your memory saves the information. If you donât sleep well, you wonât remember what you learnt as well and youâll need to study longer
Stay social -Loneliness is a bitch and itâll make you feel more stressed than you need to be. Also seeing others struggle in the same way you do can be quite calming and bonding experince. Youâre not alone in this and you have to remind yourself.
Get as much help as you can -You donât have to do things alone. Iâm someone whoâs afraid to ask for help and I pay for this flaw every damn time. Help people out and ask for help back. They wonât mind helping.
Keep your space clean -Cluttered or dirty space will add to your stress. Take the time to keep your surroundings pleasant to be in.
You canât learn it all and itâs normal -Make conscious choices when it comes to the work youâre doing. You canât learn and remember everything so choose what you study carefully. Youâll end up learning better the important stuff instead of memorising meaningless details.
I wish you all the best in the upcoming exam time and have a nice day! If you have any extra tips I didnât mention, feel free to add on and help others out.
