Iceburgh Calls the Penalties (from iceTIME, Game 22 vs. Detroit Red Wings 01/13/17)
George Carlin's wife died early in 2008 and George followed her, dying in July 2008. It is ironic George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent and so very appropriate.
An observation by George Carlin
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.
We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.
These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.
Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.
Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away.
George Carlin
It is a tragedy of American history that LBJ had inherited the Vietnam War from the previous president and because of it he is not so strongly remembered for The Great Society.
An amazing bird and wonderful photography.

Trump and Xi’s Beijing deal may have looked like a major economic victory — but for Canada, it triggered one of the sharpest strategic responses of the year. In this video, we break down how the North American Manufacturing Priority Act, new U.S. incentives, and massive China-U.S. agricultural contracts were framed as a direct threat to Canada’s manufacturing base, critical minerals sector, and export markets.
Heads up from a Southern Californian that it is time to buy any fans and/or KN-95 masks for the summer NOW, before the start of summer and wildfire season!!!
If you wait until your AC goes out to make sure you have enough fans, there will not be fans available for you to buy. If you wait for a wildfire, no one will have KN-95s for you to buy. They will all be sold out, especially as climate change makes summers more and more severe, and fire season longer and longer.
Other tips for keeping cool in extreme heat:
Do not ever leave a child or a pet in the car while it is off. Ever. Not "just for a few minutes," nothing. Kids have died from being trapped in hot cars in temperatures as low as 70 degrees F (21 C)
Especially if you live somewhere that doesn't typically get hot, make sure you own at least 2 tank tops and 2 pairs of shorts if at all possible. Thrift them or search them on Buy Nothing/something similar if you don't have them already. You will want the option
Cotton fabric evaporates moisture quickly and sheds heat fast. Cotton clothes are great for the heat for that reason, and if you're really desperate for relief, get cotton shirts/towels/cloths wet and either wear them or hang them up in front of a fan. The fan will blow the cooler, moist air throughout the room, cooling things down
Open windows and doors on opposite sides of rooms to create airflow
Hydration tablets and electrolyte drinks are magic for dehydration. You need to replace the salts you're sweating out. Salty trail mix is also great for this (you eat it on hiking trails for a reason)
Make sure your pets stay cool! Cold packs inside fabric can be really good for this (and for you!)
Most efficient place for a cold, wet towel to cool you down is the sides of your neck, your hands, and the soles of your feet (but NEVER put ice against your bare skin!)
Don't really expect anything of yourself between 1pm and 4pm - that is the hottest part of the day, and so it's the time you need to be the most chill (ba-dum tss). Movement creates heat (hence why you shiver, hence why exercising warms you up), so try to do as little as possible, and especially try to save errands and exercise until dusk
Many places now have heat shelters. Look them up in your area. The public library is often a spot for these, and if not, still a really good and FREE place to stay all day with AC
Plants cool things down. Standing on the grass will leave you measurably cooler than standing on the asphalt two feet away. Stay on plants, stay in the shade, and do what you can to add plants and green spaces to your area, to help keep it cool
If you live in a wildfire hotspot, try your best to get an air filter or air purifier now, because there will be none left by the time you need one
If you do end up near a wildfire zone: any smoke you can smell is smoke that can affect your lungs. Leave the house as little as possible (except to evacuate, which you should do as soon as an evacuation is called for your area). Duct tape the seams around windows and exterior doors to help keep out the smoke. And pack a go bag (change of clothes, toiletries, important documents, medications, spare food and water, essentials for pets or kids)
My qualifications: Lived in California my whole life, most of it in Los Angeles, and half my adult life living in buildings without AC. One time I went to a baseball game in 117 degree weather (47 C) and genuinely had a good time. I know things about keeping cool

Here’s another terrible tale of genocide, so buckle up. The British conquered New Zealand, Australia, and Tasmania, exterminating cultures and people in the process. Truganini, believed to be the last “full blood” Aboriginal Tasmanian, died on May 8, 1876. It’s important to note that terms referencing blood percentage have a racist history; this tale utilizes terminology of the time under examination.
—On This Day in History Shit Went Down: May 8, 1876—
In the 1760s, Captain Cook voyaged to Australia and said this shit is ripe for colonizing. The following century the region was not a good place to be Indigenous Australian, because 90% of them died and the survivors suffered brutal oppression.
The inhabitants of Tasmania had been living there for 42,000 years and were isolated by rising sea levels in 8,000 BCE. In the 18th century, the population of Aboriginal peoples in Tasmania was estimated at 7,000. Then these sun-sensitive fuckfaces showed up and started the killing. And killing. And killing.
Truganini was born around 1812, shortly after colonization began in earnest. She was the daughter of the chief of the Bruny Island people. When she was 17, her mother and uncle were murdered by soldiers, and her sister abducted by seal hunters, never to be seen again. Then loggers took a break from cutting down trees to cut down Truganini’s fiancé in brutal fashion, followed by repeatedly raping her.
The following year, 1830, she was involuntarily transported to Flinders Island with the last Aboriginal Tasmanians, which now numbered only a hundred people. Massive colonization, murder, war, disease, and destruction of their lifestyle and habitat had all but obliterated the people. Those few who survived were subjected to missionaries trying to indoctrinate them into a western lifestyle and religion, but they became increasingly melancholic, refusing to bear children, choosing death as the only escape from their oppressors.
Eight years after the relocation to Flinders, Truganini said fuck this place and fled to mainland Australia to join an Indigenous Australian resistance under a freedom fighter named Tunnerminnerwait. She fought with them, receiving a head wound from a gunshot, until the group was captured in 1841. Tunnerminnerwait was executed in 1842 while Truganini was forcibly returned to Flinders. The Indigenous Tasmanian population continued to dwindle, and she was relocated to Oyster Cove near Hobart in 1856. By 1873, she was the only one left alive. She died three years later.
Knowing her body would be defiled for “scientific” reasons, she begged to be cremated and scattered in the ocean. But she was buried instead, and two years later the colonizers dug her up and put her skeleton on display at the Tasmanian Museum. A full century later her remains were finally given the treatment Truganini requested.
There is debate as to whether Truganini was the last full-blood Indigenous Tasmanian. Fanny Cochrane Smith, who died in 1905, was the last fluent speaker of the Tasmanian language. Two years before her death, Smith made recordings of Aboriginal songs, which are the only audio recordings in existence of the Tasmanian Aboriginal language.

This is largely the result of one man's petulance and sense of omnipotence. Tariffs and attempting to belittle a leader and an entire country have consequences.
Canada has been a staunch ally and dependable trading partner for decades. The US' deluded despot has poisoned the well and things will never be the same.
