"Aw, thank you!" Mille smiles genuinely at Chara; she's so used to being called silly for her taste in high-quality desserts, and maybe it does seem silly, in the world she's from (a dog-eat-dog world, where resources are scarce and people struggle to survive). But here, it seems like her idea of a perfect cafĂŠ order is simply considered wise. What a refreshing change of pace!
"Oh, your Papa owns this place?" Millie is careful not to let herself get too loud. "He's doing a wonderful, wonderful job! I could swear I stumbled into a little slice of heaven, here. Plants, books, and coffee--it's like a dream come true! Everyone here loves you so much; you must be a great help and inspiration to your papas!" She's delighted. This child is delightful. This cafĂŠ is delightful. Everything about today is delightful. Millie feels the beginnings of peace start to settle over her heart. There's a little bit of home in the air, and she might need to cling to it.
Her order comes up soon enough, and Millie suppresses a noise of glee--it still comes out of her, just muted. "Oh, thank you! Oh these look lovely! Ya'll do such a good job here; thank you so much!"
Millie decides now's as good a time as any. As the barista is handing her her Ceylon tea, she leans over and whispers. "I messed up earlier--I made the owner's kid drop their chocolate cake, and I feel so, so bad about it! Is there any way you could get them another slice? I'll pay for it if I need to."
Millie looks back at Chara, to see their reaction--she knows she's been observed. She knows she's not sneaky, but she's not trying to be anymore. She's just trying not to make a big deal about it. She shoots Chara an apologetic little smile...and then considers.
The child seems well loved, and well-taken care of, here. But they also...seem far too skinny. Not that Millie has never seen an underfed child before, but still. The workers here love them, but the workers are working. Their fathers aren't here. No one is taking care of them right now. And yet, they flinched when Millie got too loud, and made motions that were too big. Is staying and looking after them the right call?
It only makes sense to leave it up to Chara.
"Thank you so much for bringing me here!" She means that. Her cake and tea look and smell incredible. Her mouth is watering. "Would you be okay keeping me company for a little bit? Maybe we can eat cake together! It seems a lot safer eating it here. I would cry if I saw another piece of cake in the snow. That was so, so sad." She's one hundred percent sincere.
"Oh! Silly me! All this time and I never introduced myself! I'm so sorry."
"I'm Millie Thompson, and it's a very great pleasure to meet you!"
