2.5 million light-years away lies the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). Andromeda is estimated to contain up to one trillion stars, whereas our own Milky Way contains 200-400 billion. It is also the closest large galaxy and is actually approaching the Milky Way at 250,000 miles per hour, fast enough to travel from here to the moon in one hour. In about 4 billion years, it will actually collide with our galaxy yet stars inside each galaxy are so far apart that it is unlikely they will collide with other stars during the encounter.
