The Oscar Goes To…

Like every year, the Academy Awards presents the fashion obsessed with a grand overview of the best and a little of the worst from the industry.  There were a few favorites that I saw saunter along the red carpet including: Kerry Washington draped beautifully in a custom Jason Wu- her stylist choice of minimal accessories was the perfect way to showcase her baby bump;  Amy Adams Tightly wrapped in Gucci kept her classically poised to perfection; and Lupita Nyong’o stole the crown with her show stopping princess dress by Prada with the most amazing pleating! The pleating in her dress gave her the illusion of gliding up the staircase when she went to receive her Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actress.’  Oh and I must say, she delivered the most inspiring speech of the evening as well!  Don’t you agree?!

       The carpet was full of trends like white pastels and metallics, but the one I found most surprising was the flux of classic black!  Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie and Charlize Theron all wore their black gowns with perfection, especially Charlize who was my ultimate favorite of the evening!  However, the classic black did not save every lady though.  Specifically, Julia Roberts wore an ill fitting Givenchy that not only aged her, but it made her look like a witch from the cast of Harry Potter!  Similarly, Anna Kendrick’s J. Mendel gown was a bust!  All the features disrupted her silhouette and in the end, the dress wore her instead of her wearing the dress.

Waiting and Wanting.

The month of February always seems to be the month of wait–waiting for the snow to melt, waiting for the days to be longer, and waiting to bust out some fierce spring fashion!  While we wait let’s talk spring trends.  My favorite trend of the season is bold prints aka art pop prints. There is something about the ‘in your face print’ that screams spring!  Now there are a few ways to inject this into your wardrobe and here are a few tips:

1. If you are scared of print and the thought of wearing it all over makes you run for the hills, then accent yourself with an art pop printed scarf.  This will keep you on trend while still keeping true to your own personal style.

2. If you’re gonna do it then do it on a dress!  I recommend finding a dress where the backdrop to the print is light in color.  This will keep the print from weighing you down visually.  Our Eva Franco dress is a prime example, seen here on our CEO Laura!

3. Keep it to one item.  There is no need to walk around looking like a gallery so do not over do it!  A great casual way to strut the art pop wave is with a t-shirt.  Keep your look balanced by pairing it with a casual blazer or bomber jacket and your favorite pair of jeans; minimizing the accessories will keep the focus on the t-shirt.

Kiss Me!

With love’s big event coming in a few days, I am sure there are a thousand things on your mind and the perfect outfit is one of them!  Now there are a lot of questions on your mind--where is he taking me?  Is it dressy or casual?  Is it outside?  Will there be dancing?  Most men don’t realize the amount of information women have to think about on this day.  

I would start off by talking to your man.  If he insists on making it a surprise, then demand to hear a few of the details!  I would definitely ask if is it dressy or casual... inside or outside?  Now I am sure no matter what the setting, you want to look and feel your most fabulous, so here are a few hints to help calm your nerves and set you on the right track.

1.  Remember it’s just Valentine’s Day, not your wedding!  Plan a couple outfits a few days ahead.  This will give you a few days to add and subtract parts of your outfit.  We all dress best if our outfit matches our mood, that’s why I recommend deciding on the day.

2.  Don’t complicate your outfit with a theme!  Some of you get so Hallmark about the day that you start to get “all themed” with your look...  STOP right now!  There is no need to cover yourself in red lace and bedazzled hearts-he gets it!  On Valentine's Day there is no need to look like red and pink threw up on you.

3.  Love yourself!  The best way to start the day is to be your own valentine!  Sip on a red velvet frappuccino and nibble on a few decadent pieces of dark chocolate.  Take a moment in the day to love your closest friends with a few old school Valentine cards!

4.  Give yourself enough time to get ready.  Ladies are notorious for the late date start and that can kill the mood before the night even starts.  Remember: getting ready is only half the fun! Think of all his senses when you are getting ready and I guarantee he will melt into your lap.

The Superb Bowl

Yes!  It is that time of year when the boys go into a frenzy over their team making it to the Super Bowl and when they seem to forget that you are the most important touchdown!  I say, just let them have their fun and join in by making it a Superb Bowl!  Rock his favorite team’s colors in a fashionably fabulous way.  Pick up some “cheap and cheerful” accessories and put together your own team spirit.  I know some of you ladies love the game as much as they do, but there is really no need to wear an oversized jersey- making you look like that sack of potato chips on the coffee table!

                                         Don’t go overboard!  The goal is to pull off a fabulous tackle not a faux pas... tacky!  Keep it comfortable and chic with a pair of your favorite jeans, an on-trend box cut top and a few accessories to match his favorite team.

Hats Off to The Grammys

Last night the music industry’s spectacular showcase was definitely one to watch! Whether you tuned in for the music or the fashion, there were plenty of hits and misses!

                            The red carpet was covered metallic like a disco ball at the discoteque! Rita Ora killed it with her Lanvin cocktail dress!  The ever-changing color and shimmer kept the photographers shooting her every angle and those rings she wore...let’s talk about those rings! The rings brought the perfect rock n’ roll edge that one would expect from the Grammys!

                             Continuing the metallic scene, Taylor Swift was chained down with a beautiful Gucci metallic dress that fit her like a glove and amazingly paired minimalist accessories. I must say, this was a perfect decision her stylist made. Taylor Swift did a great job on the red carpet, now if only her performance was a hit! Too bad the dress didn’t chain down her head during her performance! I swear she was going to flip her head right off.

         Stars were also draped with royalty--royal blue that is! Alicia Keys marvelled the cameras with her plunging Giorgio Armani gown and Anna Faris kept it classy in a Fitriani dress for her FIRST Grammys!

                                                 Another trend spotted on the carpet were the accessories. Headgear went from the old world to the future with these stars: Pharrell sported a hat the looked like he stole from Arby’s; Madonna took her hat from The Planter’s Peanut; Yoko Ono and her son Sean looked like they traveled with an old time circus; and Daft Punk came back from the future--who knew?!    

             All in all the Grammys were the Grammys.  There were amazing performances--you go Beyonce! There were some that fizzled out on their high expectations and some surprised me!  Thank you Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Madonna for your spectacular movements of equality that moved me beyond!

Winter Survival

Now that the holiday season is over, the luster of a winter white dusted scene with holiday cheer has turned into the polar vortex.  Here are a few tips to keep the last winter months bearable and fabulous:

1. Layer your knits!  No reason to hide in all your cashmere and fine wools!  Layer those luscious  knits like a scene from Game of Thrones.  Wanna fabuluxe it up?  Now throw on some fur—vegan or real—and strut girl!

2.  Speaking of strut, strut in a killer boot… by the way, enough with those ugly Australian made “but they’re cozy” boots that make you look like you have cub feet!  

3. Don’t wait for spring, start rocking the season's biggest trends now!  Just because it is not officially that time of the year, don't have a tissy.  Instead, I recommend you bust out that graphic style print scarf or that college collared shirt immediately!

Britney-the come back... just like fashion.

It seems like we, collectively as a schadenfreude-gratification based society, are always ready to tear down a celebrity that's having a bumpy moment in their career (ok, like you never shaved your head in a fit of rage?).  Well, perhaps we haven’t shaved our heads, but we have all had a moment that we are thankful wasn’t broadcast across news outlets around the world.

With Britney's new Las Vegas extravaganza about to begin, it made me wonder about fashion comebacks. I remember 1990 fed us those fleeting über-trends-of-the-moment like MC hammer pants, and before we could banish those to the annals of history, here comes Bieber throwing it back in our face. Perhaps then, trends need to be treated with a soft heart and we need to just let the younger generation enjoy a thrill like we did.

So with that in mind and remembering my New Years resolution to ease up on my judgment of the younger generation I am going to embrace a few of the coming spring trends with an open mind.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Happy New Years Resolution!

A new year has begun and as a tradition we alway set a resolution but rarely do we ever stick to it.  But, when it comes to a fashion resolution you might have a chance keeping it with a little honest advice!

1. Pick a trend that is you.  With as many trends going on as there are personalities, it’s easy to make the right fit.  Boost your confidence knowing that your strut is the envy of the office.

2. Save some cash by buying accessories.  Buying a whole new ensemble can hurt the wallet, especially when you promised your partner that you would cut back on buying fashion…(yeah right!)  Accessories can redefine last spring’s hottest trend into this season’s latest.  Take the whole black-and-white mega trend of spring/summer ‘13. Load it with some oversized, bold colored and large “art” print accessories and you transformed it to the Art Pop trend of 2014.

3. Alway look fabulous! I’m tired of seeing ladies looking less than fabulous in public. Yes, I know you were “just running to the store”, but sorry, it’s not an excuse to be seen in your pajamas or whatever you wear in the privacy of your home. I get that they’re comfortable, as I can live in my sweat pants when I’m at home.  You never know who you could run into -- a client or that hot guy in the neighborhood whose attention you’ve been seeking.  What you wear is a representation of you.

4. Plan your wardrobe beforehand.  It sounds like a lot to go through your wardrobe at the beginning of each season but it will help keep you looking fabulous all season long.  Check that last spring season wardrobe fits you properly, as “some things” can change during the winter months.  

5. Repair your loved items. After having your base wardrobe spend seasons in your closet, natural wear and tear will occur. Go find a seamstress and make them your best friend, keeping these items to their optimum shape will keep you look sharp and save you from early replacements.

5 Tips to Keep you Holiday Party Fabulous!

With all the pressures of getting ready for the Holiday Season, the last thing we need is to have it all fall apart at the grand finale Holiday party!  Here are five tips to keep you fabulous all night long.

1. When picking out your ensemble keep it glamourous with a hint of comfort.  There is nothing worse than someone watching you do the “constant adjust the dress dance” when you should look like an effortless holiday goddess!

2. Don’t have final say on your man’s outfit.  Now there needs to be a compromise with this one.  Don’t make him look ridiculous all dolled up like a magazine editorial.  Let him be comfortable but well put together, That includes proper fitting clothes, not holes or tears and most of all that he does NOT match your outfit!!  One, couples that match look absolutely ridiculous and second why would you want to share the spotlight?

3. Keep a holiday first aid kit handy, if you’re the host these would be good things to make available in your guest powder room.  Double sided tape, lint brush, tide stick, antacid pills, sewing kit, spare hosiery, clear nail polish and light vanilla spray.

4. Little bites sprawled all over the house is tradition for the holiday party but they also hold a huge responsibility!  With hectic holiday preparations sometimes we forget to eat before we get to a party and two quick glasses of wine can go straight to our head. So to prevent us from dancing on the ceiling before dinner is served, best to put a little nibble in the belly.

5. Lastly spend money on your lipstick!  Find a fabulous color that stays on your lips. One of the biggest cringe moments is seeing a woman’s lipstick everywhere, on the wineglass, napkin, everyone’s cheek and especially on her teeth!

Jingle Bells Batman Smells…

The holiday season brings about a special kind of kitschy love... the Christmas sweater! Now, yes -- I know they can make you cringe, but let’s all stop being a grinch and throw our fashion sensibility out the window to enjoy the humorous side of Christmas.  You may be wondering “Why does this holiday season trend keep growing every year?”.  One reason could have something to do with those nostalgic memories of waiting for Santa and our Mother’s baking sweet delights in the kitchen.  Yet another could be the pure delight of getting a laugh from our friends at the Christmas party.  Either way, I say “wear it anyway," but remember on December 26 that it becomes a painful reminder of how many spiked eggnogs you had at the company party and will be quietly and quickly time to tuck that sweater at the back of your closet until next year.

               Let’s go through a few styling tips to keep that sweater acceptable in a stylist eyes. First, Christmas sweaters don’t need to be three sizes too large!  Find one that fits your fabulous body, there is no need to look frumpy and kitschy at the same time. Second, look for a sweater with one theme on it, whether its snowman or Santa Claus -- one is enough, as too many and your sweater suddenly looks like Christmas threw up on you. Lastly, don’t make your partner wear a matching sweater! The point of the Christmas sweater is not to make fun of it but to have fun with it!  Let your man find the Christmas sweater that speaks to his own inner elf!

I Like You.

Everyone is always up in arms about how many likes they receive on social media sites, what about in person?  It is all fine and dandy to brag about how many people like that uber cute picture of you, but wouldn’t it be so much more satisfying to have complete strangers on the street love your look.

To begin, make use of your senses and smell fabulous!  There are a pleather of scents out there and you have the option of spritzing one or many.  The key is finding the scent that represents you in that very moment of time.  To me, musky fragrances elude to a more mysterious evening event, whereas floral scents enhance the ever so joyful step to an afternoon of laughs!  Remember to have a hint of fragrance not an overbearing stink bomb that will bring nothing but dislike!

Be a sight for sore eyes, do not make eyes sore!  Your likes will increase exponentially when you are rocking a killer outfit!  Make sure you are dressing to your body shape and accentuating your best parts.  The key to turning heads is when you walk past and give that glare, you exude confidence; sometimes jealousy is a good thing.

Lastly, smile!  You will be amazed with how many amazing personal interactions you can have in a day by just smiling!  No one wants to hang out with a pouting girl… plus it makes you look ugly and get wrinkles!

Seven Steps to Cool

You know when you are walking down the street and you spot that chick with great style and all you can think in your head is, “Bitch, she looks amazing!” Well here are seven things to always keep in mind and to help you be cool.

1. Drop the yoga pants! Unless you are working out there is no reason to be wearing them- yes I get it, they’re comfortable, but they are essentially jogging pants… so not cool.

2. Smell good but not like the whole garden. There is nothing more beautiful than a hint of a fragrance on a woman, keyword… HINT!

3. Flip flops are not shoes! Chilling on a beach? No? Then there is no reason to be sporting them.

4. Rocking the business suit? Leave the walking shoes at home! There is nothing more visually painful than a gorgeous power woman strutting her stuff to work and wearing a pair of comfortable running shoes… FAIL! If your feet can’t handle the walk then take a cab.

5. Know your skin tone! Ever have someone ask if you’re feeling okay when you feel fine? It would be best to check the colors you are wearing, you could have it all wrong!

6. Dress your body shape! Nevermind about the whole dress your age bullshit, if you got legs for days (that would make a girl half your age die with envy) then rock it girl!  

7. Keep your trends in check! Trends are known to flood our market and trick us with huge flashing gimmicks.  All I am saying is make sure it works for you, not against you.

Work it Girl

Oxford, geek chic call it what you want all we have to say is our follower, olyarostov is killing this look!

A simple white button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, in our eyes is sexier than ever!  The mix of oversized slightly corky glasses and ankle gripping platform heels are the perfect juxtaposition to make us say “Work it GURL!!!!!”.

Work it Girl!

I’m sure you guessed it, it is all about mixing patterns.  Patterns come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and the thought of mixing them may seem like an idea way too complicated for your already complex life!

Let me start with two basic rules to make this trend easy as pie.  First try to pair a dominant color- if you look at Jessica’s outfit notice how each individual pattern has a constant color of royal blue; incorporating this consistency will let the viewer’s eye relate the patterns.  Second, keep patterns close in size.  When patterns have a similar ratio in size the brain categorizes them to be the same.

These two rules are are all you need to pull off this trend. Yes, I know, you have come across ladies that pair together small and large prints. Pairing small and large prints is possible but it takes a bit more technical thinking to achieve.

Work it Girl!

Miranda Kerr

We are starting a new weekly segment called “Work It Girl”, giving you a breakdown of celebrity looks and why they look so fabulous!  Here is Miranda Kerr looking fabulous with her son Flynn.

There are so many reasons why she looks ever so chic.  First is that she is dressing right on trend with a leather biker jacket, this season’s take from the ‘Grunge Era’. Note that the colors she is wearing have a vibrancy about them; it is the use of complementary colors that I adore.  Like I mentioned on my post about color, when you wear complimentary colors the viewer’s eyes will automatically be intrigued by the combination.  Another big plus to Miranda’s look is her balance of loose and fitted. Notice how, even with her bulky top layers, her figure is not lost? That is because her form-fitting denim reminds us of where her figure lays. The last thing I would like to point out are the accessories she is wearing.  The classic sunglasses, uber warm scarf and the denim shirt (nonchalantly tied around her waist) are enough to layer her look with interest. Had she piled on jewelry on her top half, it would have resulted in the Christmas tree effect- over decorated!

Tip No. 1

Keep the Boxy Balanced.

Boxy tops are a huge trend this season and with the need to feel cozy during these cooler months, I would say the trend is just on time!  A quick tip on how to wear boxy tops: always pair them with a slim bottom.  You don’t always need to resort to a skinny jean or legging, just remember that your bottoms should lay close to your body; think of it as a yin and yang relationship- loose on top and fitted at the bottom.  This tip works in reverse as well. If you are wearing a loose bottom keep your tops formed to your frame.  This will keep the loose relaxed look in check without making you look frumpy!
