Rinse, Repeat is a one-off event exhibiting the work of 10 artists, all of whom utilise elements of repetition in their methods as a way of finding resolution. The show is situated in a former Victorian house with a strong physical presence of time and refrain. Student Initiative Fund: Live art interventions take to the streets… From East to the BARBICAN

On 22 - 23 August 2015, Saturday and Sunday, Something Human presents From East to the BARBICAN: a two-day live art programme as part of INTERFACES in partnership with Fish Island Labs and the Barbican Centre.

With thoughtful reflections on democratic uses of public space, artists as citizens, explorers and activists utilise digital streaming and connectivity to playfully re-configure our understanding of the city. Enacting ceremonial processions, tracing alternative routes and activating dead spaces, the artists cross the City thresholds into the historical and financial heart of London, to join an exciting live art programme at the BARBICAN. In the surrounds of this iconic labyrinthine space, visitors are invited to explore new territories re-mapped by digital projections, online technologies, performance installations, and intimate interactions.

Domestic SciFi

The 10 participating artists would like to thank everyone who came to the opening for the exhibition “Domestic SciFi” at The Rag Factory on 25th June.   

There was a mix of work on display in the gallery, in a variety of media, reflecting the different specialisms of the artists.  These included the drawings of Aurelie Poux, painting by Philip Williams, sculptural work of Graham Clemie and 3 video installations by Kerry O’Connor, Adam Patterson and Rachel Olivia Christian.

As well as the work on display there were 3 performance pieces held at various times in the evening.   Lucie McLauglin presented her spoken word piece “Be Down Here”, the collaborative duo Aidan Strudwick & Andy Chaplin emerged from a multi-tiered wedding cake to give their interpretation of modern relationships and Andrew Saunders engaged the audience with his participatory puppet theatre.

FROM ARCHWAY WITH LOVE

“A whole year of art and life turned into an exhibition. A one-night-only show, where the inner thoughts, the dreams, the needs, the ingenuity and the naivety of ten young artists were palpable and clear.

Ten first-year Fine Art students at Central Saint Martins set up this exhibition all by themselves. The works exhibited had no labels and some changed during the exhibition. In fact, this was not an end point of a year, but the beginning of a long march. The excitement and fervour of the artists setting up the show was equaled only by the respect with which the audience looked at their works. It was an exhibition for exhibition sake all the focus was on the works, unspoiled by the vices of big shows where all that matters are the incomes and the name of the artist.

The works ranged from paintings to karaoke machines, from video installations to storm clouds, from pseudo advertising billboards to video games, and, of course, two puppet dogs. All were the produce of a path. Even the least mature, roughest works talked to the viewer, and took him/her in the world of the artist.”

Space Nuggets | 15 June | Harts Lane Studios | 6-9PM | SIF Fund

Space Nuggets is a temporary show exhibiting works by Central Saint Martins Fine Art students Elliot Hewgill and Molly Bridgwood, and Camberwell Sculpture students Rosie Ward and Tom Francis. 

The exhibition explores the complexities of technological advance and the wonders and perils that come with it.  Social media and technology promise us an easy and efficient closeness, but are we moving further away from each other?

What will sex be like in the future? What if we have to learn to live alongside a whole other race of beings? The exhibition endeavours to give a comedic perspective on these radical advances that our world is starting to face. The theme of space will be juxtaposed with very real, close-to-home objects to initiate a dialogue between the present and the future.

It’s a well-known fact that reading a book makes you 98% more attractive, you just don’t get that kind of appeal with a Kindle.

 The library have had a clear out and have given us a mountain of their books with the request that we fundraise for something that you would all enjoy. So – we’re having an end of term DJ night in the Platform Bar next Friday, and every single penny we raise tomorrow is going to go towards it. We’re hoping that we raise so much that you don’t have to put your hand in your pocket all night.

 All books will be between £1 and £2 (where else are you going to find course books for that? Move over – Amazon) and once they’re gone, they’re gone – so get yourself down and hook yourself up.

Because the Internet | The Rag Factory |  Private View, 22 May, 6pm - late | 23 – 24 May, 12pm – 5pm

Six brilliant artists from UAL are taking part in an exhibition titled Because the Internet which opens this Friday at the Rag Factory in Brick Lane. Their works explore the impact of the Internet on everyday experiences and cultural production through engaging with the body, memory, commerce, terrain and ethics.

 The impact of the Internet on everyday realities is something we have unanimously adopted as ways of life – the adaptation of emojis to IRL expressions, our ceaseless “swiping”, “updating” and “messaging” all a testament to new modes of communication and production. The Internet has always occupied a tricky terrain; often seen as a mirror to “reality”, we are instead proposing that it is simply a tool that extends our existing reality.

 We have seen a sudden rise in exhibitions about the Internet recently and the postinternet art movement (if it can even be called that) seems to have reached ripening grounds with the publishing of You Are Here: Art After the Internet by Omar Kholeif earlier last year. Instead of curating a serious exhibition full of screens and net.art throwbacks, Because the Internet challenges notions of what art about the Internet can look like (hint: it need not be full of screens) without taking itself too seriously (to prove our point we have stolen our title from Childish Gambino’s album).

 A slightly less boozy and more participatory counterpart to the private view night on Friday is also happening on Saturday night with WWW.LOVE.XXX, an “intellectual sex party” featuring performances, workshops, talks and participatory art. Participants are encouraged to come with open minds to meet like-minded strangers and contribute freely to a discussion of what it means to fall in love in the digital age.

 Because the Internet is opening at 6pm on Friday, 22 May 2015 at the Rag Factory in Brick Lane. The project is initiated by Adeeb Ashfaq and Megan Miao and made possible with the generous support of SUarts.

Anonymous Reflections is UAL’s first anonymous collective and we’re seeking submissions for our publication.

  Our intention is to create an open, non-judgemental platform for a truly free expression of thought, while also giving UAL students the opportunity to reveal a creative aspect of their identity that has previously been concealed. Any medium will be accepted and all submissions will be published in a book to be held in the Central Saint Martins library.

  So, go! Upload your hidden poem, your secret drawing, your forgotten photograph that lies redundant in a lost file. Get it published in book and leave your anonymous footprint at UAL for others to discover.

Lecture Day: The Legacy of Walter Gropius

  Need some cultural brain food during the Easter holidays? Well, this is happening at Impington Village College. If you're into that sort of thing:

Saturday 25 April, 10am – 4pm, Impington Village College, Cambridgeshire

This special lecture day will take place in the Grade 1 Listed Building at Impington Village College – the only public commission in the UK by Gropius.

Walter Gropius (1883 –1969), Architect and founder of The Bauhaus School, is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture.  The lecture day will bring together experts from different fields to discuss the influence of Gropius’ work at Impington and how his work which penetrated the wider world is still significant today.  There will be presentations on the built environment in the 1930s, conservation principles and the impact of modernist architecture on practice today.  Speakers include leading Architectural Historian Dr Alan Powers, English Heritage and RIBA Architects.  There will include a tour of the building, an introduction about Henry Morris and panel discussion.

Last week, MA Screen Acting/Directing and MA Character Animation hosted a networking event in the Platform Bar after MA Character Animation student, Samira Tristani-Firouzi, applied for the SU SIF fund:

"On Thursday March 5th, a small lunchtime event was hosted for MA screen Acting and MA Character Animation. This event was born out of a chance meeting between the two course reps, and blossomed into a full event for students from both courses to mingle and meet one another. The event outline was very simple; get a spread of food and drinks in the Platform Bar and watch the students make friends. Luckily it really was that simple! Turns out when two groups of people are keen to talk to one another, all they need is a small push to do so.

We had a budget of £50.00 and booked two tables in the bar for two hours. Invited were both the 1st and 2nd years of Character Animation and the 1st year of MA Screen. Roughly 50 students attended, which is fabulous considering both courses are fairly small. After mingling, I created a joint Facebook group so we could all keep in touch. For there a few collaborations have already taken place.

I believe this event was so successful because both courses were genuinely interested in each other and both feel like they have a lot to offer the other side. The animation students can offer MA Screen a chance to learn about a different side of film and let loose and go over the top. The screen actors can provide reference video and voice acting, something really crucial to animators (especially for the 2nd years who are working on their graduation films). I'm thrilled that this event was able to take place thanks to the Student Initiative Fund."
