T-15. Still stuck in the first idea we have as a team. Hide and Seek hasn’t been born yet.
Initial brainstorming. T-30 days before we came up with Hide & Seek.

Review on Kathleen Chao’s Financial Literacy
Kathleen’s interview on her project Financial Literacy provided a window of opportunity for financial education for young people. I think the topic provides opportunity to change the subpar level of financial literacy, and tackle some key issues in it. I think her study of lack of any mandatory curriculum requirement is very strong for her statement. Also, I think the issue Kathleen is trying to tackle is very relevant for all youth across the world, and an applicable solution has the scope for changing the status of financial literacy worldwide.
Being a financial illiterate myself, I would have loved to understand the topic a little more. I would be interested in knowing what does financial literacy mean for college students. What would they have to know to be considered financially literate? I think that would have helped readers understand what are some tangible solutions Kathleen is striving to devise through her research. Also, the interview regularly mentions the underuse of resources to gain financial literacy. An insight to what Kathleen thinks are some reasons for it could also have been a great insight. Lastly, Kathleen mentioned how young people gain financial literacy through their parents, and how schools should make personal finance management a mandatory part of their curriculum. I would have loved to understand how these two literacy methods impact financial literacy, and which method would Kathleen prefer?
Research Methodologies
Narrative Inquiry
Narrative inquiry aims to study how stories are structured by studying various narrative media. It also analyses who produces them, and breaks down what do they mean when they produce the content. The method also studies how media is consumed, and why they are silenced, contested, or accepted. I am particularly interested in this method because it can be a very useful to study how stories are created, and how people react to it. It can also be used to test how people react to a new content, especially an immersive one, to study and analyze the thesis question.
Longitudinal Analysis
Longitudinal Analysis is the study of data across time. It is generally used to study a hypothesis which cannot be proven using data from a single point in time. The data collection needs to be continuous over time, or in regular interval for longitudinal analysis. The analysis will consist of inquiring linearity in data across time to test the hypothesis. I am interested in this methodology because it might be used to analyze the trend of media consumption when it is first introduced for the first 10 years. It might be used to analyze the thesis statements which relate to the consumption of immersive experience, and how people react to it when a new immersive experience in introduced.
Media Content Analysis
Media Content Analysis involves deconstruction of pieces of media for quantitative and qualitative analysis. It analyzes ideologies of people who produce them, and how they try to spread that ideology. The methodology looks at the communication aspect of media production and consumption. I am interested in the methodology because it would help me study how an idea or a story with an ideology is spread among the consumers. I am interested in studying the impact of positive, reinforcing stories on the behavior of people especially through immersive content.

Object/Interaction Research
This week I got the opportunity to play with the Hololens for the first time. Although, the product itself is going through various alterations, and it is not the most ideal hardware to use augmented reality, I wanted to comment on the improvements for it since augmented reality is a huge part of the utopia/dystopia project me and Mayukh are planning for. Hololens still seems bulky and very hard to wear/use/or walk around with.
Why does it need to be easier to use/portable?
- Augmented reality has a lot of utility is multiple industries. If the hardware is wearable and portable, we would be able to use the technology in day to day life for various purposes.
Why does augment reality have a lot of utility?
- The key feature of augmented reality is to add elements to the current reality by providing either more information, showing aspects which might be invisible to naked eye, or make a static object more interactive. Unlike virtual reality, AR can find its use much more beyond entertainment and storytelling. There already have been a lot of experimentation in AR in fashion and retail.
Why is it essential to add elements to the current reality?
-Addition of elements to basic reality allows customization of message or utility of the product depending on a person’s requirement.
Why is it essential to customize the message or the utility?
-For e.g. orange juice is important to hydrate a person, is a good source of vitamin C, and also can be used to create amazing cocktails. When a person walks in the department store, there can be more information on a orange juice’s package as per the need of the person, which will allow people to make better decisions.
Why do people need to make better decisions using augmented reality?
- More than being about making better decisions with augmenting reality, it is about getting more information about a product/service/situation to make an informed decision. Augmented reality can allow that addition of information in every real life situation, making it possible to make well-informed decisions in everything that they do.
Narrative improving the current product/experience
My utopian/dystopian world has replaced the hololens with an augmented reality projecting contact lens. The lens is easy to use, and is accessible for everyone. By 2050 (the time in my project’s world), the lens has become part of almost everyone in the world, as are mobile phones today. The narrative timeline shows the details of its utility in context of the whole narrative.
