Review on Kathleen Chao’s Financial Literacy

Kathleen’s interview on her project Financial Literacy provided a window of opportunity for financial education for young people. I think the topic provides opportunity to change the subpar level of financial literacy, and tackle some key issues in it. I think her study of lack of any mandatory curriculum requirement is very strong for her statement. Also, I think the issue Kathleen is trying to tackle is very relevant for all youth across the world, and an applicable solution has the scope for changing the status of financial literacy worldwide.

Being a financial illiterate myself, I would have loved to understand the topic a little more. I would be interested in knowing what does financial literacy mean for college students. What would they have to know to be considered financially literate? I think that would have helped readers understand what are some tangible solutions Kathleen is striving to devise through her research. Also, the interview regularly mentions the underuse of resources to gain financial literacy. An insight to what Kathleen thinks are some reasons for it could also have been a great insight. Lastly, Kathleen mentioned how young people gain financial literacy through their parents, and how schools should make personal finance management a mandatory part of their curriculum. I would have loved to understand how these two literacy methods impact financial literacy, and which method would Kathleen prefer?

Narrative Inquiry

Narrative inquiry aims to study how stories are structured by studying various narrative media. It also analyses who produces them, and breaks down what do they mean when they produce the content. The method also studies how media is consumed, and why they are silenced, contested, or accepted. I am particularly interested in this method because it can be a very useful to study how stories are created, and how people react to it. It can also be used to test how people react to a new content, especially an immersive one, to study and analyze the thesis question.

Longitudinal Analysis

Longitudinal Analysis is the study of data across time. It is generally used to study a hypothesis which cannot be proven using data from a single point in time. The data collection needs to be continuous over time, or in regular interval for longitudinal analysis. The analysis will consist of inquiring linearity in data across time to test the hypothesis. I am interested in this methodology because it might be used to analyze the trend of media consumption when it is first introduced for the first 10 years. It might be used to analyze the thesis statements which relate to the consumption of immersive experience, and how people react to it when a new immersive experience in introduced.

Media Content Analysis

Media Content Analysis involves deconstruction of pieces of media for quantitative and qualitative analysis. It analyzes ideologies of people who produce them, and how they try to spread that ideology. The methodology looks at the communication aspect of media production and consumption. I am interested in the methodology because it would help me study how an idea or a story with an ideology is spread among the consumers. I am interested in studying the impact of positive, reinforcing stories on the behavior of people especially through immersive content.
