his brow quirks quizzically as the next slide in this pair's presentation turns out to be a... unicorn. and in blaring rainbow letters: TESTY SLIDEY.

yuyu freezes, eyes going wide and mouth worleddly mouthing a repition-testy slidey. okay. okay, she has this. she can handle this. she wets her lips and plants her hands on her hips with absolute confidence. confidence she didn’t really have.“which brings us to, uh, this! so the really interesting thing about the text is that it, uh, well the writer is english, right? and, like, uh, the heraldry for the united kingdom utilizes a unicorn because of… england?” she sees amakiji pull a withering, empathetically embarrassed expression from his seat. he’s always a good measure to go by-if he’s embarrassed, you’re probably wrong, “i mean scotland! and it’s a symbol of the unification of both. the text, uh, deals a lot with turmoil. you know, with the girl moving in with her estranged father. so it’s like-the complicated unification of england and scotland, right?”could this be going any worse? she was running out of horseshit to shovel, “and the unicorn and rainbows are both associated with femininity, but, uh. the "test” part, well. the arrangement with the protagonist’s father was, uh, meant to, uh, be a temporary thing. like a test!“ but on the other side of the screen, hadou finally broke into hysterical giggles. yuyu broke, too, doubling over and clutching her hands to her mouth to try and stifle the laughter.

he has so many questions. there's so much they want to learn. ❝ how did you get it? one for all. did you get it for a reason? ❞

the admiration and marvel in this child’s aura is almost touching— how it doesn’t immediately occur to him, that it’s never been one grand plan, that it’s always a gamble, and sometimes choosing the lesser devil. he was both.

in death he’s come to understand the nature of this power perhaps better than alive. that is fair, as much as he wants to see their enemy vanquished. and young izuku here has a circumstance none of them ever had— youth, time, and more support than was ever accessible to any of them. it was toshinori’s purpose to pass his long experience and vision onto someone who can rise higher with them. and it had been their collective purpose to enable him to do that. 

gosei nods at izuku’s question, and his arm extends to address him. because of you, young izuku.

his outstretched palm then curls into a fist, and they’re suddenly in a small storage room. gosei peeks inside his grasp, and there lay a single strand of hair. then, in desperation, he looks again at the dying man beside him.they’re not safe, they don’t have much time— and yet, insistence is more prominent on the man’s visage than dread of any kind. gosei feels only horrible guilt as he swallows the hair, as the resulting expression of relief is obscured by tears, as he has to flee without proper farewell or last stand.

to think he passed the power forward in the same fashion. haphazard, necessary. out of sentiment. however, in hindsight, he’s glad. he’s glad he was given purpose. he’s glad they found izuku.

the words pierce the dreamscape like a finger across misted glass, a window of clarity in which the desperation quiets, even if just for a moment. he heard him. he finally reached him. gosei will find in hindsight, that he could never have experienced enough of this. so many questions unasked, to himself, to those who relied on him or loved him or guided him. he didn’t have enough time, and he doubts anyone with this kind of power has. 

his palm clasps around the frail fingers stretched towards him ( they’re delicate but strong, in the way hope and faith are ) and for the first time, the man’s features appear in plain sight. the contact of their hands is skin to skin, warm and alive and real, a comforting, grounding thing in this strange place. but that obscure foundation begins trembling again soon, as his own doubts and skepticism crawl back in. how is he going to use this precious, limited time?

i don’t know--- the thought smudges the space around them, weighs them, something humid that makes his grasp grow slippery. gosei realizes this mistake, a cold pang of urgency, and with it the sensation lifts a little and he clutches on. he uses that as a springboard to gather his thoughts, to communicate at least part of what haunts him, to have at least one of his million questions asked. i think i was rather given it out of necessity. but i’ll do anything i can to fill these shoes. i want to, so badly, so desperately--- i never knew i could feel this way. but there isn’t time. a shadow is already falling over the city. you know it, don’t you? isn’t it the one you fought?

despite the lurching confirmation that yes, she really had approached him, his eyes wander to confirm the fact, drifting down onto her cleavage his bicep where the contact was first imminent. then, in desperation, to take in her expression ( which, as expected, only supports her stance. and he dared to hope otherwise. )  fire-alarms go off in his mind, a quick widening of his eyes, and he takes a sharp step to the side, turning to face away. his ears, peeking out from beneath dark hair, glow red.

he offers a shy nod in response. he’s quick to resume normally despite the distraction ( the blush remains, but it does no harm. he’s a professional adult and at work so he ignores it ) and reaches to pick an additional cup from the cupboard. he hands it to her with a polite smile.

He can remember seeing through the eyes of his closest confidant (his only friend) and he can remember when the spark of One for All left him for someone new. For years and years he’s travelled from hero to hero, and each time it’s a new experience.

Without life, he exists in horrible loneliness, accompanied only by specters of the people he used to reach for so desperately. It’s only on nights like this he can receive even some semblance of company. Junichi stretches his hand out towards his successor, the thoughts swirling around them, buffeting him like a strong wind. He nods. 

His lips move, though his words sound no louder than a whisper. It would be all too easy for them to be drowned in the desperate storm of Gosei’s thoughts. “You wield the power that was forced onto me. It was not given to you- you earned it.”

gosei glances at his colleague from where he's preparing coffee in the teachers' lounge. she's just out of hero training class, and wearing--- that. that outfit. it's outrageous ( is it not? ) glasses and modest clothes look so endearing on her, especially when she's immersed in paperwork. what a contrast. he turns his attention back on the coffee machine. make haste, please.
