I know this scene, all over the fandom and beyond, has so many sexual connotations and hype. I know that. I’ve joined in with some of that and laughed and adored it.
But, this scene is so fucking fantastic and more than that, I can’t even comprehend it. I don’t think many can or will. I don’t want to spew my ramblings over your dash, but this scene is one of my favourite Sherlock/John scenes.
John is in immediate danger, as is Sherlock, but that seems irrelevant somehow. John, Sherlock’s John, is in immediate danger. Sherlock reacts. Sherlock is so, incredibly worried here, in this particular scene.
It’s difficult to see it in this gif set, but we have all watched this scene to death. It’s the way he says what he says.
~”All right, are you all right” or whatever.
The way he says it with so much desperation, it pulls my heart in so many different directions, and John, wonderful John, he’s so incredibly relived and shocked.
He reacts like “What the hell are you doing? Calm down, I’m fine!” and he is fine, John Watson is always fine and in this scene he sees Sherlock waver; Sherlock isn’t fine. He’s not fine one bit, Sherlock could see the fallout, he could see the worst and he was scared. That reaction, the desperation and immediate transformation to “I must protect” is faultless. It’s their relationship in a nut-shell. It’s desperate, it’s frantic, it’s frustrated and it is completely fine.
It’s all fine.
