Things I think more people need to know about self-harm:
Disclaimers:
• “Self-harm” here means pathological self-harm, not religious self-harm.
• This post is meant to educate, not give anyone ideas.
• The lists of examples given are not exhaustive.
1. Cutting yourself with a knife is not the only form of self-harm that exists.
If you do something to deliberately cause yourself pain (physical or emotional), no matter what it is, it is self-harm.
Cutting yourself with something that’s sharp enough to hurt but not sharp enough to break your skin is still self-harm.
Forcing yourself to throw up because you know it’ll hurt and/or you feel like you don’t deserve to be nourished is still self-harm.
Doing something you know will make you uncomfortable for the sake of (as opposed to in spite of) making yourself uncomfortable is still self-harm.
Eating foods you are allergic to or that have a texture or flavor you know you can’t take to put yourself in pain or physical discomfort is self-harm.
If you are a victim of trauma, putting yourself into situations that mimic your original trauma to trigger yourself is self-harm.
Triggering yourself on purpose is self-harm.
If you are harming yourself on purpose, it is self-harm regardless of what it is and whether or not other people can see it.
2. Self-harm is still self-harm regardless of why someone does it.
Self-harmers who do it…
• For attention
• On an impulse
• Because they think they deserve it
• Because someone else thinks they deserve it
• To punish themselves
• For no reason at all, actually
• And always regret doing it afterwards
• And aren’t necessarily hooked on it
• And are capable of stopping
• And only do it in certain situations
• And have personal limitations for what kind(s) of self-harm they will engage in
• And don’t have a depressive disorder
• And aren’t suicidal
…are still self-harmers, because they have harmed themselves. Saying they didn’t just because they didn’t do it for the “right reasons” is like saying you didn’t actually break someone’s plate because it was an accident and not done out of spite. (Use that one on whoever owned the plate and you would be laughed out of their house.)
3. Invalidation of self-harmers because the forms of self-harm they engage in are something other than what you think self harm is, or because you think they don’t do it “for the right reasons” needs to stop.
When you say this to self-harmers, here are some examples of what we will hear:
• “You’re not putting yourself in enough pain and I dare you to put yourself in more.”
• “Your personal struggles aren’t enough of a struggle.”
• “I don’t care about what you’re going through.”
You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think these aren’t dangerous things to say or imply. I’ve almost attempted suicide because people have said these things to me, and being told I’m not putting myself in enough pain has caused me to “up the ante.” If you care about the person’s safety, you will not invalidate their self-harm.
If you are a self-harmer and reading this:
• Your pain is valid.
• You are justified in feeling hurt by what you’ve been hurt by, even if it’s something others might perceive as “small” or “trivial.”
• You deserve just as much help as any other self-harmer.
• Anyone telling you you’re not “really” self-harming is an ableist and needs to shut the fuck up.
• The mods of @disablesian-club are more than willing to listen and give you validation, if you feel like you need to talk. We can’t promise that we can help your situation but we will certainly hear you out!
• I hope you feel better soon. ^_^
>> But if you don’t, it’s okay to be hurt for however long it takes.

I am Taiwanese
Most people in the world take it for granted that they have a country that they can proudly talk about. We don’t. We’re not allowed.
Outside our island, we can’t display our flag. We can’t sing our anthem. We can’t even mention the name of our birthplace. Do you know how it feels to watch your team, whose name is not even your country’s name, win in the Olympics, and in the ceremony carrying a flag that’s not your’s and singing a song that’s not your’s?
When I was a kid who knew nothing about Taiwan’s situation, I got mocked by some of my Mainland Chinese classmates for replying “Taiwan” when asked “where are you from”. I became scared to answer that question. I thought it was a shameful thing to be born in Taiwan, because that must be why they bullied me.
Taiwan itself is really divided over whether we should give up “Republic of China” and just become independent as “Taiwan”. Most of you get to proudly answer where you’re from. We not only don’t know which name to use, we get labeled “traitor” either way because the “proper” answer is “People’s Republic of China”, a country that many of us, especially the younger generation, have zero attachment to.
Being recognized may not seem that big of a deal to most people. But mind you we didn’t even have it to begin with. I don’t think people have the right to tell us to “get over it”. Not when you’ve never experienced the shit people give you for being yourself. “Hello, I’m from England, nice to meet you”. Switch that to “Taiwan” and suddenly you get attacked, as if it was “FUCK YEAH I’M TAIWANESE AND I’M GOING TO START A REVOLUTION AGAINST CHINA”. We’re so desperate for recognition that we have news about western news mentioning Taiwan. Isn’t that pathetic.
A 16 year old girl was forced to apologize for introducing herself as a Taiwanese on Korean TV. Some Chinese netizens said it’s already too late to apologize; they will not forgive her. But why should she apologize? Why does she need anyone’s forgiveness? Why should she be forced to identify herself as something she doesn’t identify with?
Forget about politics. No one has the right to decide someone’s identity for them. We share the blood of the same race, so what? I am the only one who can decide who I am, and I have decided I that I identify as a Taiwanese.
I want to know the joy and pride of watching your country’s team win in an international competition. I want us to be able to keep our flags up and flying when a Chinese official visits our island. I want our efforts in contributing to the world be recognized. I want to be able to proudly tell you my origin without getting shamed on.
We shouldn’t have to apologize for being Taiwanese.
The news about a 16 year old Taiwanese K-pop idol apologizing to China/the Chinese disgusts me. I respect China and have no input about the whole Taiwanese independence situation, but seriously, bullying a 16 year old, calling her a dog, telling her to die is just--unacceptable. She never did anything that insulted China or the Chinese and she definitely did not take a stance on Taiwanese independence. I find it so sad that we cannot call ourselves Taiwanese or wave a Taiwanese (Nationalist) flag without getting harassed by others. Once again, this is definitely not representative of the entire Chinese population, as it is just a certain sector. My Chinese friends are extremely nice and I respect them. “We shouldn’t have to apologize for being Taiwanese.”
ok im going to talk about this for the last time… this is not some copy and paste shit from a wiki page, every single word was typed by my bitter taiwanese hands.. this is for all you international fans (especially non-taiwanese).
taiwan has its own culture and yes we have our own government!!
we even read and write differently.
pro taiwan independence isn't some extreme political view in taiwan, most local taiwanese (本省人) want independence from china.
taiwan is a small country with no real connections, and in order to not upset china most countries do not recognize us at all.
during international events, we are forced upon the name “chinese taipei” and to carry a flag that is not our own.
SO EXCUSE US WHILE WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN OUR CULTURE AND OUR SMALL COUNTRY honestly what else can we do when the rest of the world tells us we dont exist and tries to erase our identities?!! and with all this bullshit happening to tzuyu it hurts to see so many international fans trying to dismiss us once again. like honestly how do you think tzuyu felt when jyp changed her nationality to china on her profile lmao fuck jyp fucjk grown ass adults who should know better fuck the “fans” who think tzuyu made a mistake
Don’t bother me, I’m trying to nap.
Yummmm
You would be surprised with how many people in your life could be going through depression at this very moment. People hide it like a paper bag over their heads out of fear of being judged, made fun of, seen as weak, or just not taken seriously. Depression should not be taken lightly, it holds us down from our purpose and potential in life. Those who tell you that it doesn’t exist have never experienced depression in their life, therefore not understanding the symptoms and how it’s something that cannot be fixed in a day! So if you think you are depressed or if you think you know someone else who is, please talk to a friend, a family member, or anyone else in your life that you trust - never overlook the possibility of seeing a doctor for more professional help!! Your feelings are real, your feelings are shared upon millions. Don’t hide it, talk to someone about it. With the right help, you can rediscover your confidence and begin life anew with our undying love and support! We are right here!!
