hey boo, so if you have all that free time to waste telling a korean idol that he should kill himself, then you have enough time to read this post and realize exactly what youâre talking about. its time you stop getting your facts by word of mouth and you realize exactly what the whole âi hate namjoonâ rhetoric is about.
I usually start these posts with disclaimers, basically clarifying things that might be misunderstood. I have since decided that if you cannot be bothered to read the post in its entirety or decide to take things out of context, then I cannot be bothered with your complaints. That said, if youâve read the whole post with a reasonable mind and you still have questions, then please, by all means message me! I doubt you will though because this post is more that 6k words of evidence in Namjoonâs favor (also, on the subject of citing evidence, this post does draw off of @parkjiminhateblog âs great post from approximately a year ago).
In addition to citing evidence, I will also be adding a personal analysis. I understand that most people have not followed Namjoon as closely/long as I have, so I will be touching on aspects of him that Iâve personally observed and believe to relevant to this discussion. They however will be presented as a personal analysis and the difference between evidence/fact and personal opinion will always be apparent. There will be no doubting the validity of evidence as I will directly quote interviews and cite sources. I will also cite the year as much as possible so you can observe a clear timeline of everything mentioned in this post.
Now to the main event. There are four main accusations against Namjoon. Because the hatred against him actually stems from a lack of understanding in the extent of these problems â word of mouth has done him so much harm; people need to stop relying on this âwhy i hate namjoonâ telephone game and learn to research on their own â I will also be explaining exactly what he did so there is no misunderstanding.
The main accusations are: racism, colorism, sexism, and ableism. In the case of problematic idols I believe in a reasonable approach towards the âeducate themâ push. That is, they should only be educated if 1) the mistake was a first time thing 2) there is reason to believe that they are truly ignorant in this case. I do not believe in âcome on guys lets just educate them!â if theyâre already made the mistake before and received backlash. I also believe the time of the occurrence and where they were in their career as an idol are big factors in understanding what truly happened. As parkjiminhateblog said in their post, he hasnât ever repeated the same mistake. Every time he is called out, he apologizes, educates himself, and never repeats it. That at least speaks to his character of whether you at all doubt things were done out of ignorance.
Racism
What happened: mimicked âtalking blackâ in this interview (2011), said the n word (2014) in covering this Shinwah song (note that the n word was already part of the lyrics) and cultural appropriation in wearing black hairstyles in debut (2013).
None of these have real excuses. Nothing makes what he did okay. I want to make this clear. The accused can claim ignorance or whatever, but that will never make the crime acceptable. Me claiming that he was ignorant will never take away what he did, will never change that people were hurt, will never make these accusations okay for anyone to do ever.
For âtalking blackâ: he spoke in aave, presenting the dialect as gimmicky and in that way it was really disrespectful. Why is it rude to mimic aave? Black Americans who speak aave have been dismissed and mocked for their accents, have experienced real discrimination simply for how they speak. Getting passed up for jobs, having their intelligence undermined, generally disrespected as less only for their accent. Its problematic. To turn aave into a way to âlook coolâ is so incredibly ignorant when black people have suffered for it. (Hello white american privilege!!) Now Namjoon using that as a âspecial skillâ is not okay. But what needs to be considered is that aave appropriation is a primarily american/western-english-country-speaking phenomenon. Other people in the west have become more aware over time by interacting with american culture, but Korea is far more removed. His âtalking blackâ more likely came from a place of âi grossly misunderstand and am bastardizing black culture and hiphop culture in generalâ rather than âi live in a place of privilege and i am contributing to the negative stereotypes against black people in americaâ. Make no mistake, he was contributing towards negative stereotypes koreans have about black people but this is removed from american stereotypes. I will repeatedly ask you all to remember how korea is ethnically/racially homogeneous while america is incredibly diverse. Read: exposure. Let me quote a past post of mine to explain this further:
âGlobalization only began for them around the 1960â˛s after the korean war, while the western countries have been in active contact with each other for a very long time. We know so much about each other and lately know a little bit more about the east (really, not that much and unfortunately views tend to be biased and narrow), Korea it still new to the concepts of western culture. They were not with america, observing us through years of racial segregation, and they werenât really affected by anything in America except for when we were involved ourselves for either militant/political or monetary reasons. We are very much foreigners. They should be respectful of all races and racial discrimination must be addressed, but we cannot address it with the same level of hatred we would an ignorant person in America. Their culture is still growing and teaching is still the way to go. They have no obligation to match america â westernization often strips beautiful cultures of what makes the unique â but we do have the obligation to explain to idols what is problematic and the subtleties of their colorism and racism. Now, if they continue after being taught then you may write them off as truly racist.â
Rather than calling him âracistâ for this, I would focus on how he took a culture that he wanted to be part of â being hiphop/rap culture, which came from the black american community â and disrespected it. This is a case in which I believe he should have educated himself. He didnât understand the significance of aave, in his mind its was just an accent. To a korean who doesnât speak great english and doesnât really interact with the intricacies of american culture, aave might seem more like âhey look at my british accentâ rather than âiâm mocking a marginalized peopleâ. Again, it wasnât alright.
But he is educated now. On hip/hop rap culture in general; I include cultural appropriation in this (ie his debut hairstyle and general attempt at a âthug rapperâ aesthetic). Two different 2015 interviews support this:

Q: You recently released a collaboration song with Warren G⌠but I had the thought that those who are more interested in rapmon than in bangtan would really enjoy that song. How was it like working with Warren G?
There are two things that Warren G told me that I will never be able to forget. The first is, hip-hop is open to any one. Despite what your race is or where youâre from, hip-hop is a type of music that is always ready to give you space for anyone who enjoys hip-hop. So, donât restrain yourself behind any type of prejudiced thought, and the other one was youâre doing well, so no matter what others say, believe in yourself and do what you want. Although itâs something that anyone says, I think it touched me even more because he was the one to say it to me. He has a habit of saying, âitâs so good.â but I think that it became a sort of spell. Something like hakuna matata. âitâs so goodâ, when I think of that phrase lately, my hearts becomes at rest a bit more.
Q: Although hip-hop is a genre of music, it seems like a type of religion and philosophy. Just what is hip-hop? Just what is it that guys seem to go crazy over it?
Defining hip-hop is the same as trying to define love. If there are 6 billion people in the world, then there are 6 billion definitions of love, and like that, each definition of hip-hop is different for each person. Of course, itâs possible to give a dictionary definition. In 1970, there was a person called dj herc in south bronx. At a party that he was hosting, he set breaks on a beat and during that break, someone would be rapping, someone would be dancing, and someone else would be doing graffiti⌠thatâs how hip-hop was born, and they call that the 4 elements of hip-hop, but dictionary definitions like these is something anyone knows, but to explain that spirit⌠in one word, itâs something that canât be explained. Itâs a way that expresses me as well as being a meaning for freedom and rebelling. Because itâs something where people play and have fun with, it can have messages of peace and love placed in it. If you compare it to a pokemon, itâs like a ditto. Personally, hip-hop to me is the world. The world that Iâm living in⌠itâs difficult, right? To be honest, itâs still hard for me too.

Q: Maybe itâs because I donât know much about hip-hop, but there are many aspects of hip-hop culture or clothing that Iâm unable to understand easily. The hanging gold necklaces, gun fires, images like that⌠I also donât really understand the term âswagâ that is used often.
The culture of shooting guns and doing drugs is not the actual self of hip-hop. Itâs just become a by-product that appeared around hip-hop music, itâs not the actual self of hip-hop. Although thereâs a certain image that pops up clearly when you think of hip-hop fashion, thatâs also becoming something thatâs more broad. Look at a$ap rocky or kanye west. They donât wear pants that drag around any more. To understand âswagâ, you need to understand what kind of meaning âmaking it on your ownâ has in hip-hop. Making it on your own is a very cool and important concept in hip-hop. Iâll use jay-z as an example. Jay-z was a drug dealer. Heâs someone that sold drugs on the rooftop of a very large stadium called barclays center, but he succeeded and bought that building. After buying that building, he dressed up in hip-hop and then went up to the rooftop and looked down at that building. Then they took a picture of that and posted it. After seeing that, everyone died. Kya⌠just how cool is that? Jay-z had a song a long time ago that was called â99 problemsâ, but he raps âIâm someone with a lot of problems, but I donât have any problems with women? [actual lyrics]â, yet he ended up marrying beyonce later. Isnât that amazing? Starting off as a drug dealer, becoming the best wealthy person, and marrying the most amazing woman in the world. I think that gives dreams and hopes to men. Showing that off and revealing it to the world is called âswagâ. Even when they show it off very openly, you canât hate or dislike it. Because they started from the bottom and made it on their own.

Q: I heard that you received a lot of mentoring from Warren G.
I wanted to ask Warren G a lot about hip-hop. Like Warren G stated, things like âshooting guns, doing drugs, robberyâ arenât things that are hip-hop itself, but a negative side thatâs included within hip-hop. Itâs like an uninvited guest that shoved its way into hip-hop, but people said that thatâs hip-hop. He also told me that hip-hop is something thatâs open to everyone despite what race you may be or what language you may speak. I heard a lot of great things from him besides those as well. Although it may seem like a very obvious thing, but the weight of it just felt different when Warren G said it. And after everything he would say, Warren G attached âItâs all Good.â When I heard those words from the side, then my mood felt really good. Should I compare it to the feeling of a grandfather telling good stories next to you (laughter).
Q: You shouted, âWestside Till I Dieâ during âIf I Ruled The Worldâ.
Thatâs well⌠I was really wrong then (laughter). After the album came out and I listened to it, I thought âAhâ. I think I was immersed in the emotions while recording and ended up shouting like that.
Q: Whatâs the specific reason why you feel you were wrong?
First off, I didnât even live in the âwest sideâ⌠And even if that song had a G-Funk sound, what I shouted wasnât the way to respect the west coast hip-hop musicians. I believe there are many meanings inside the words âWestside Till I Dieâ. Sweat, struggles, pride, etc. Isnât it a phrase that compressed all these factors of life.
Q: Are you saying that you overlooked the weight and complex undertones that the phrase has within hip-hop?Â
Thatâs right. I believe itâs different from words like âYo!â or âCheck It!â. As a result, I was thoughtless.
Q: Are you admitting it to be a mistake?
Further than a mistake, it was a wrong. I have nothing to say.
On his discussion with Warren G he learned about the essence of hiphop. I donât think he truly elaborates, but being the ever learning person he is, Iâm willing to bet that he questioned Warren G in a real attempt to educate himself. Personal commentary here, but if youâve followed Namjoon for a while youâll see two things 1) he always wants to learn. He doesnât have that mindset where he wants to stubbornly stay as is and finds education bothersome. Namjoon really wants to be as well educated as possible on things he realizes he lacks knowledge in. And 2) he is a genuinely kind and humble person. You can see it above. Namjoon always accepts responsibility for his mistakes, he always takes time to think on how his actions affect others and he takes the time to reflect on how he might help others over himself. He would never hurt someone on purpose.
Now for usage of the n word. This the strongest accusation against him. It is also the most misunderstand, the most exaggerated, the most bastardized by word of mouth accusation against him. Using the n word? Horrible. Seriously. This is a racist slur and unless youâre black, it doesnât belong in your mouth. Not white people, not other poc, not because âoh my one black friend doesnât careâ or âno I mean it in a friendly wayâ. If you arenât black, that word is racist and you have no business using it. I need to make that totally clear.
What also needs to be understood are the circumstances of the incident. This was early 2014, before AHL or Namjoonâs collab with Warren G, before they got a real international fanbase, before Namjoon spoke good english â he said recently in the vlive chatroom that in 2014 his english was so shaky and he was so shy that he couldnât get out more than 2 sentences â before any of the educating took place. Thatâs important to know. Why? It shows his ability to learn and how he does actually care once educated. Itâs also important to consider that 1) he didnât write the lyrics or choose the song. This was a cover of Shinhwaâs song T.O.P. assigned by BigHit and Show Champion for their Shinhwa tribute. And 2) it was performed in Korea and broadcasted on Korean TV. The fact that he said it wasnât okay, but in these circumstances I really wonder how well Namjoon knew that that was wrong. He was told to, backed by everyone, his personal understanding of the word was derived from learning english while listening to rap and watching friends â i.e., he heard the n word used a lot by rappers but with no instruction manual saying âjust for black peopleâ â and on top of that it was broadcasted on Korean TV. If heâs the criminal, BTS, BigHit, ShowChampion, Shinwha (the ones who fucking wrote it in the first place), and all the koreans that watched the broadcast without saying anything are all accessories. Its a sticky situation. I really would call this ignorance because Namjoon isnât the type to purposefully disrespect someone, and if he was being okayed by everyone around him, I donât think he actually understood that it was wrong. It was bad. I agree. But look at the situation.
Now where is my apology you ask? He has apologized! But it was 2017 and he never directly addressed the what, talking more on how he had to educate himself and change his mindset⌠a very good, long talk. I have it written out below. For a more specific apology honestly, there was a tweet. Iâve talked to older fans and they all remember it. But its been deleted or something because itâs nowhere to be found. Iâm not sure why. I know in everyoneâs minds, despite the sincerity of his 2017 apology (more on that later!) and how everything he said was really⌠exactly how people should react to accusations about being problematic, people still want him to do something more specific. I understand that â though I believe just going through a list of apologies is much less sincere than what he already did â but I donât believe thatâs exactly possible. I think it was @chimchams (i might be wrong lol) that said something along the lines of âheâs probably not allowed to bring it back up againâ. I hadnât thought of this before. We tend to forget, especially BTS fans because BigHit is nicer than SM or the other two big 3, that idols are extremely micromanaged. Currently, the Namjoon hate is finally starting to calm. For those who are newer fans, it was literal hell being a Namjoon stan until recently. It still sorta is. People were cruel, they sent death threats, they attacked him whenever he so much as breathed. Idols could do some of the most racist shit ever and tell fans they didnât give a fuck, and somehow âBut Namjoon!â would come up. Because at one point, for whatever reason, he became the epitome of racist idols. Makes absolutely no sense. Hell, these people were calling him racial slurs and telling him to kill himself. New fans know this: hating Namjoon is a kpop sub-culture. Yes, it really is. The hate grew so large that it didnât matter what he actually did, people hated him. To them, these accusations were just a justification for their hate rather than their reason. More on that later, but if you donât think Namjoon is hated or that he got off easy you are so so horribly mistaken. The point is, they donât want him bringing that back up. They donât want to go back into that Namjoon hate periodâŚ. you can sort of see a hinting towards this in the 3rd paragraph of the below transcription of the vlive. Iâm sure that he was told to not talk about it.
I mentioned it above, in the vlive âRMâs hello 2017â (at 6:40) Namjoon addressed how his mindset in the past has been problematic:
âI had a lot of thoughts. I did, in the beginning. When others talked about me in a criticizing way, rather, when others gave unforgivable feedback, it could be advices. Or criticism. It could be condemnation. When I heard so, I felt like this in the beginningâŚÂ âWhy? Why?â. Because I thought, I have been like this. I thought Iâve never caused any trouble or inconvenience to others. Iâve never thought that way. Because I studied hard when I was young, I worked hard on music, I performed hard. I liked playing games. Thatâs what consisted of my life. At school I was an obedient student. I did well at school so teachers liked me. I never fought with classmates and I was around with friends.
Iâve never thought that my behaviors or music or words could hurt others, or cause inconvenience to others. Iâve never thought that way. As I went through the year 2016 I came to think about that. My words or behaviors, regardless of my intentions, could cause troubles or hurt others feelings. In the process, I thought I need to hold responsibility for that and I need to think about such things. What I said or did would not be undone. I thought so. Then I learned how to admit myself. It was hard to admit that I could hurt othersâ feelings. It took a long time. I didnât like to admit that I was wrong. Rather than I was wrong, it was hard to admit that I could hurt othersâ feelings. It was hard to admit because Iâve never felt that way.
In the beginning, when I was faced with such criticism, I thought like, âWhy? I did it for a reasonâ. Now, as I said, I feel much better about my feelings and emotions. Now, when I hear something about me, even if its a criticism or condemnation, I am able to think about what made them say so. âWhat did I do wrong? What I did caused others to feel uncomfortable? What made them criticize me?â I am now able to think like that. For now, I canât talk about what was changed in detail. Still, I may have another chance to talk about later. Anyways, to become a better person, I need to hold responsibility for what I do. I need to change my mindset. I need to change my way of thinking if its wrong. Thatâs why I was able to release âAlwaysâ. The lyrics are very defensive. I wrote that a year ago when I felt stressed. A year ago, or so. I wrote the lyrics back then. I am now able to release it because I no longer feel that way. Now I feel relaxed.
In a recent interview with Joongang Ilbo, I talked about how I feel about myself and my attitude. I talked about this in detail in the interview. As there were many interviewees, what I talked about wasnât covered in full. I guessed so, but I talked about it anyways. In the past, I was so youthful that I stuck to my attitude or way of doing. About music or words too. In a bad way I insisted I was right. Last year, I went through some tough times in which I wrote âAlwaysâ. I fought with myself and I kept asking âWhy? I think like this, whatâs wrong? Why do others not think like me?â After going through this, I came to think about, âIs there anything I did wrong?â I had lots of thoughts. âOh, this is not good for me,â I came to think. Anyways, now or in the future, I want to be an artist that has good influence. I hope my music would help others. So, I decided to go in a better way. My goal for 2017 is to be mature in many ways, including my way of thinking. I want to become a person who thinks more righteously, and make greater music. Those are my goals.â
And then March 2017 he released the Change music video which touches on racism in America and the BLM movement. It gets better â Namjoon was the driving force behind this. Billboard interviewed/wrote about them multiple times and I will cite all three. In this billboard interview:
Speaking of solo songs, âChangeâ recently came out. Rap Monster, you and Wale are talking about different-but-similar issues when South Korea and America are both having interesting political times. Did you guys have a chance to discuss your different viewpoints?
We didnât have the time to get into it deeply, but Iâm always watching the news about Trump and America; I always watch. When he first suggested a collaboration, I was like, âWhat should we do?â We could just do you know, a common hip-hop song, but I wanted to do a little more special. We have our political situation in Korea and the students are very angry. So, I think, if we talked about whatâs going on, then weâll have a real special collaboration. I think my guess was right and it became special.
In this billboard interview (itâs a video and I wrote this part out by ear. forgive me for paraphrasing):
âI wanted to do something special with him⌠not just some party song or love song. So we have our situations in Korea and they have their situations in America. I thought it would be the best collaboration to talk about our situations⌠political and social.â
And from the billboard article:
ââChangeâ features Rap Monster, dubbed âRMâ for the release, and Wale trading off verses about societal ills, primarily those currently causing divisiveness in the U.S. With the duo criticizing the âalt-right,â Twitterâs ability to âkill,â âracist policeâ and declaring âno faith in the government,â the unrestrained hip-hop track is one of the most progressive songs yetâŚ.. Though most K-pop acts shy away from politicizing their music, or even touching on seemingly controversial topics, the Rap Monster-led K-pop act has addressed politics and cultural issues in their songs on multiple occasions, with a particular focus on youth-related issues such as mental health, bullying and suicide.â
I will continue saying it. Namjoon doesnât just educate himself. He takes on the cause and makes himself a proponent for change.
Colorism
Considering my writing of this post in relation to recent âscandalsâ you might be thinking of the mess with the Japanese Magazine where Namjoon, Seokjin, Yoongi, and Taehyung were all quoted saying they prefer pale skin over tanned skin. If you have questions on that, read this post.
Namjoonâs other accusation of colorism comes from when he is quoted saying something along the lines of (this was translated over) âwhen i first saw Hoseok and Taehyung they were too dark to seeâ referring to their tan skin color. This interview has been grossly misinterpreted, and I believe thatâs because we are all interpreting it as westerners. In America that shit wouldnât fly. That sounds racist as fuck. In Korea, that falls under colorism, which by the way is not the same as American colorism. American colorism is race based. Colorism in Korea isnât related to race because it refers to color within their shared race. In America its a standard of discrimination. In the way that itâs been explained to me by Korean mutuals, pale/tan is more of a beauty standard. Itâs an ugly beauty standard I agree, but itâs largely accepted and if we are to criticize him for it, then we need to criticize him from the standpoint of Korean culture, not American, because its different. I would also like to add the fact that Namjoon is as dark as Taehyung and Hoseok. I think he might actually be tanner than Hoseok. This isnât just a âIâm pale skinned and think Iâm more attractive than tan peopleâ. This is an instance of actual internalized colorism. He wasnât right to say that, but I donât think we are interpreting it correctly. He was making a colorist joke with two friends of the same skin color. This doesnât make colorism okay, but it does make his circumstances different than a white guy in america saying âi donât think women with darker skin are attractiveâ. That has racist implications because he lives in a ethnically/racially diverse country where when he refers to âwomenâ you donât assume a specific race. In Korea there are none of those implications. Again I believe Namjoon has since learned since he doesnât make those jokes/remarks any longer and appears to have personally embraced his tan skin.
Sexism
Iâm gonna be honest. I find these accusations generally whiny. Maybe its because the horrible bs that is white feminism has made me skeptical of feminism in general, maybe its because everyone puts the blame on Namjoon when the whole group is guilty of it. Probably because his response on the issue has been so great and so horribly overlooked that I canât even entertain the claim any longer. In this, Iâm only going to discuss his lyrics since while all sexist accusations fell on Namjoon, the majority of sexist lyrics were the group lyrics (and one of them was a statement made by Yoongi in a tweet which people tend to âaccidentallyâ forget).
So he had the sexist lyrics in his song Joke, released as a track from his mixtape RM in the beginning of 2015. (quote taken from soompi since they mentioned the wordplay)
Yea, youâre the best woman, being bossy. You do so f**king well, being bossy. But now that I think about it, you were never the boss. Instead of boss Iâll say gonorrhea.â
(Note: This is also wordplay, as the words for âbeing bossyâ and âgonorrheaâ are only different by one syllable.)
Now in my understanding, Namjoon was using âwomanâ as an insult to the rappers he calls out in Joke. Hey wow thats not okay! Agreed. But this is actually a really shitty side effect of rap culture. Rap music has this gross undertone of sexism, and while Namjoon has never gone as far as most rappers, this was an example of how he engaged those negative traits of rap culture. This part is more straightforward. A fan got angry and called them out. BTS released an official apology, so that end was taken care of.
But Namjoon, because he is who he is, sought further education. The person he met with MOTâs eAeon (an openly feminist person from my understanding) described their encounter in tweets, translations of which I took from soompi (2016):
â1. Recently Namjoon (Rap Monster) and I met privately and had a serious long talk about the issue of misogyny. Namjoon felt shame and guilt because of the controversy and revealed to me that he is distressed and unable to sleep well due to it.
â2. So I said that misogyny is not a label or stigma that cannot be erased, but rather an obstacle in the right path that can exist within anyone. Rather than feeling like itâs unfair or painful, itâs a matter of deciding to fix it or not after discovering it within oneself.
â3. I talked about how I am also in the process of continuously fixing myself whenever I discover something I am lacking. Namjoon listened attentively and understood better than other people I have spoken to about similar topics with.
â4. Iâm glad and relieved after seeing Big Hitâs statement in Donga Ilbo. Because I think the members and the company are moving toward a proper direction. Whatâs important is not the past or current location but rather what direction one is moving toward.â
And in another interview quoted by allkpop, which took place in later 2015 after the mixtapeâs release:
The interviewer commented, âSome rappers express hip hop by dissing others, demeaning women, or harsh cursing,â and Rap Monster revealed his point of view. He said, âThe hip hop culture can be very open, but if you look at it another way, itâs a closed culture that only those within it could understand.â
Rap Monster continued, âThe public needs to respect that culture in part, but I think that the demeaning of women needs to be subdued.â
Namjoon didnât stop there. See, when I speak to his character, this is what I mean. He didnât just educate himself and then decide to not make the mistake. He continued to educate himself in his limited free time â in a picture of his room/ryan plushies the book âBreaking out of the Man Boxâ can be seen. A summary of the book from amazon as follows:
This book tackles the collective socialization of manhood and provides an in-depth look at the experiences of boys and men. In an effort to understand the many aspects of âwhat it means to be a man,â Porter suggests the topic is worthy of being rethought, challenged, and even redefined. This book will help menâfathers, husbands, brothers, coworkers, etc.âunpack and correct those realities.

Porter provides an honest and transformative experience, empowering men to create a world where men and boys are loving and respectfulâand a human race where women and girls are valued and safe. On the heels of national movements and initiatives such as the NFLâs NoMore.org, this book provides men with the knowledge and understanding to explore how to create that world.
And then on top of that, Namjoon wrote 21st Century Girls, armyâs fav feminist anthem, and Not Today which mentions the âglass ceilingâ. The glass ceiling is âan unofficially acknowledged barrier to advancement in a profession, especially affecting women and members of minorities.â (cred google lol)
Namjoon is not a person that simply learns about his wrong doings and moves on. Namjoon learns and then continues to learn so to become a proponent of change.
Ableist
I donât think this accusation has a leg to stand on. People call the Joke MV an âableist messâ. People who call it that clearly 1) donât understand the concept of symbolism and should be kept away from all and any forms of art and 2) donât give a shit about Namjoon (youâll see why). So how is this symbolism? Itâs in keeping with the major themes of RM (Namjoonâs 2015 mixtape): identity confusion, mental illness, personal value and loneliness. I believe the Joke MV is symbolic of both the identity confusion and mental illness themes. First of all, I suppose I need to explain that Namjoon suffers from depression. It always shocks me that somehow the entire fandom managed to understand Yoongiâs issues with mental illness from just him mixtape while they remain oblivious to Namjoonâs⌠though heâs been mentioning it since before debut. He released a track, Always, written early 2016 talking about how he was giving up on living. Heâs not some neurotypical making a âlookâ out of mental illness. Again, you all would know this if you werenât so busy talking out of your ass and actually spent time educating yourselves so you donât sound like a fool talking shit. Sorry for the anger, but if anything infuriates me, itâs how antis â even within our own fandom â will continue to bully him when he openly told us that the hate and pressure piled atop his problems with mental illness was causing him horrible depression. You arenât telling some asshole to kill himself. Youâre telling a guy who is doing his absolute best to be a good, kind, humble person who stands up for others, a SUICIDAL person, to kill himself. Disgusting.
Back on subject. Before I go into how this is all symbolic, I want to quell any objections. No Iâm not reaching too deep. Do you really believe that Namjoon, the mind behind all of BTSâs crazy symbolic concepts, the one who does all the philosophical reading and bases MVâs off that reading, the king of poetic rap, would do all that just for looks? Absolutely not. Now for how the MV is symbolic.
Notice how in the music video Namjoon isnât only the patient, heâs also the guard and the doctor. This is the telling bit. People with mental illnessâ in Korea are not treated well. A friend of mine who lives in Korea â sheâs Korean, not some white koreaboo, donât worry â was telling me how people can lose their jobs for openly having mental problems and getting mediation for depression and things like that is really difficult. I elaborate on this because you need to recognize that Namjoon went everything by himself. He had to work as a leader, writing music and participating group practices, be part of the group promoting, carry all of his heavy responsibilities while pretty much having to take care of himself. I have issues with depression and personally I donât want to even imagine having to go through that all at the same time⌠having depression, 6 people who rely on you to help achieve their dreams and you cannot fail, and then no support system. So what is the asylum symbolic of? Its symbolic of how he did everything alone. How he was his doctor, his guard, the patient. He was alone.
And thats why I say those specific allegations have no leg to stand on. People continue to reach in their quest to rip Namjoon apart.
So let me recap.Â
Namjoon was accused of racism. So he educated himself on rap culture. He adjusted his mindset to understand that despite intentions he could still hurt people and never did those things again. He collabed with Wale to make a song that touched on racial issues in America. Namjoon was accused of sexism. He apologized. Then because he felt it was not enough, he met with a feminist and asked questions and learned about his wrong doings. He, in his spare time, bought a book on sexism and educated himself. Then on top of that, he wrote a feminist anthem AND spoke of the glass ceiling in Not Today. I will now add that Namjoon has also, consistently and at his own expense, supported LGBT rights and the general acceptance of mental illness. Since before debut (I canât cite every instance, youâll just have to go through all of his discography since theres so many) he has openly shared his own problems with mental illness. He openly supports gay rights. From allkpop:
âWhile listening to the popular LGBTQ anthem song âSame Love,â by Macklemore, Rap Monster left this tweet alongside it after reading the lyrics: âItâs Rap Monster. A song about homosexuality. I heard this song before but I didnât know the lyrics, now I know them and I like the song twice as much. I recommend Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Same Love.ââ
And more recently he, in the vlive chat, brought up the french film âBlue is the Warmest Colorâ and how much he enjoyed it. For those who donât know, itâs somewhat sad movie centered around a lesbian couple.
I conclude the âproblematic namjoonâ part of this.
The following now are general things to consider on the subject.Â
I no longer discuss accusations against him and now discuss things that in relation to this whole situation I believe to be relevant.
An extreme bias against Namjoon: if youâve been part of Army or the kpop scene for a while you may have picked up on the âBUT NAMJOON!â excuse that fans like to bring up whenever their favs are being problematic. If youâve read through the whole post you will now know that 1) you should only be bringing Namjoon up if you want an example of how problematic idols should act and make up for their actions and 2) Namjoon is actually not an example of a really problematic idol. Actually, in comparison to many idols, Namjoon is rather mild⌠yet his response has been one of the best in Kpop. I donât understand why it is that idols can be blatantly racist and yet somehow people will continue to bring Namjoon into the discussion. As if his past actions which he has apologized for and fixed are an excuse for their problematic favs. Why is it that I CONSTANTLY hear about Namjoon whenever an idol does something wrong? Why is it that idols can do blackface, sometimes in a way that CLEARLY mocks black people, and people still end up screaming âNamjoonâ? Why is it that I receive messages saying ânamjoon said the n word a bunch of timesâ (a lie) or ânamjoon is really racistâ (a lie) or ânamjoon is an assholeâ (also a fucking lie) when all the evidence says otherwise? I stated above and I will repeat it. There is a kpop sub-culture of Namjoon hate. Itâs encouraged and accepted. People donât bother to look into the issue further and instead make blind accusations against him. Nobody questions accuracy. This needs to stop.
How/why people bring up âproblematicâ Namjoon. The large majority of Namjoon antiâs arenât ever black people hurt by his words⌠its often times problematic, self righteous koreaboos. Why is this? Well as I touched on it briefly above, these people donât actually care about the issues. These people are the types that only care about poc issues when its time to bring down Namjoon. Racial equality isnât a movement that they actually support. Racial equality only matters to them when they want to justify being anti. These people donât care about any the social issues they bring up in hating Namjoon. All that these issues are good to them for is fandom wars. These people pretend that their idolsâ past fuck ups donât exist (these people exist within army! donât be mistaken.. no member in BTS is without a past of shit! but we pretend this doesnât exist for some reason!) while continuing to act like some social justice savior for hating Namjoon. Thats not how it works. These movements are for the benefit of marginalized groups. To use them for petty fandom wars is incredibly privileged and disrespectful. Bullshit. Stop it.
