Lida! 🌟
Little thing I was meant to finish in time for Ash's birthday. No idea when/if I'll finish it
.
The bathroom door opened again, letting clouds of steam flow into the living room. Misty wore a loose tshirt and Starmies track shorts, her hair still wet and dripping onto the towel draped on her shoulders. A drop fell onto her collarbone; Ash’s trailed its journey till it disappeared behind her neckline.
“What are you doing here?” she asked. “I didn’t even know you were in Kanto.”
“Surprise!” he said, meeting her eyes again. “I happened to be close by.”
“Pikachu-pi!” Pikachu yelped, jumping into her arms.
“Oh, I’m happy to see you too, Pikachu,” she said. Then to his trainer, she added, “Give me a heads up next time! You don’t know what it’s like to be a girl living alone thinking there’s an intruder in the house.”
Ash raised an eyebrow, nudging the plates of eggs and bacon he’d prepared closer to the stool end of Misty’s kitchen island. “What kind of intruder would stop to make breakfast?”
“I don’t know! Maybe he was hungry. It’s definitely something you’d do.”
She chuckled when Ash rolled his eyes. Pikachu climbed onto her shoulder and jumped onto the counter when she moved to sit down. When Ash took a seat next to her, she punched him in the arm.
“Happy birthday, Ash.”
She gave him that small, private smile that she seemed to do more and more often, as if she knew it set off the butterfree in his stomach and chest. He leaned over and nudged her shoulder with his.
“Thanks, Misty.”
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: The Pokeshipping E-Zine!
Hello, folks!
You might be wondering why we're posting in April - or at all. Didn't we say last November that we were done with Pokeshipping Week as it has been?
Well, we're excited to announce that this year, we are instead launching our first pokeshipping e-zine, to be published November 7, Pokeshipping Day! And we want you to be a part of it!
The theme for this inaugural effort of ours is "Sparks on the Water." We have a few artists and writers we've invited to contribute, but we are also accepting submissions from now until June 15th. Accepted entries will have until October 6 to finalize their entries. That'll give us a month on our end for assembly, and then the final product goes live on Pokeshipping Day! It will be in the form of a free PDF posted here and at the regular pokeshipping Tumblr.
Some ground rules for submissions:
Please keep all submissions in the PG/PG-13 range. You can age characters up, get romantic, be clever with implications, but we would like to keep this zine accessible to a wide age range. That and, you know - it's Pokemon.
Submissions for artwork should be at least a rough sketch suggesting the final composition. Submissions for fan fiction should be a rough draft or an outline.
Finished artwork should have a resolution of 300 DPI.
Finished fics have a hard word count limit of 3,000 words.
"Sparks on the Water" is a broad theme open to a wide interpretation, and we encourage everyone to get creative, but do please work within the theme.
Please make all submissions standalone works done for this zine, not part of a series.
Final submissions will be chosen by the staff of the Pokeshipping Discord based on adherence to these ground rules and our own judgement. Any refusals are not personal, and those submissions not chosen are more than welcome to be shared elsewhere.
That's all there is to it! Submissions should be sent via this link to our Google Form. We can't wait to see what you all can do!
“Okay everyone, take your seat, we’re going to go ahead and get started.”
Misty sighed and politely wrapped up her conversation with Janine, grabbing a pastry from the snack table and taking her seat with a yawn.
The Gym Leader Conference was held at Indigo Plateau three times a year, and the mid-year meeting was always the most boring. Everyone gave their little updates and reports, gossip was either dispelled or confirmed, and Misty always left feeling just a bit more dead inside than she arrived.
Lance stood at the front of the room behind a podium, waiting patiently for all the gym leaders to settle down, an unfamiliar young man at his side. The newcomer looked intense, dark eyes under shoulder-length purple hair glaring out at the rest of them, his entire vibe giving a mixture of indifference and self-importance.
“Who’s the new guy?” Misty asked Forrest, sliding in next to him at their usual table.
Forrest shrugged. “I’m not sure, maybe the new Viridian Gym Leader? I heard from Erika that they finally found someone.”
Lance cleared his throat and a hush fell across the room and conversations faded so he could speak. “Good morning, Kanto Gym Leaders,” he welcomed them. “We have a lot to cover today, so let’s jump right in. First and foremost, it is my pleasure to introduce our new Viridian Gym Leader, Paul. Paul comes to us from Veilstone City in the Sinnoh region. He has completed in numerous regional leagues and competitions, and is quite highly regarded for his no-nonsense battling style. I hope you’ll all joining me in giving him a warm welcome.”
They all clapped politely as Paul took to the podium, his expression remaining carefully neutral. “Thank you,” he began. “I look forward to working with you all and running the prestigious Viridian Gym to the best of my ability.” He bowed, and immediately stepped down off the stage to sit at an empty table at the front of the room.
“At least we know he’s not just a personality hire,” Misty said dryly, causing Forrest to snort out a laugh.
The rest of the morning passed by uneventfully. Misty’s gym update went fine; no news was usually good news when gyms were concerned, and it was easy to feign interest in the other presentations when she had something much more interesting to focus her attention on in her RotomPhone.
Ash: Hope the conference is going well! Look at this little guy I found the other day! I thought you would like it!!
Misty smiled fondly at the text from Ash and the accompanied picture of him beaming and holding up a little blue shellos.
(She was a bit horrified to realized she actually thought Ash was cuter than the shellos. Ridiculous.)
She was back at her table, picking at her catered lunch and catching up with Ash’s texts. He was somewhere in Sinnoh, apparently. When she asked where specifically, he sent her another picture of himself and Pikachu surrounded on all sides by trees, shrugging goofily along with his “lol idk”.
He was adorable, and she wanted more than anything to be our lost in the woods with him instead of in that stuffy conference room, eating a mediocre sandwich.
“You know Ash?”
She yelped, nearly falling out of her chair to spin and face the source of the unexpected question, finding herself looking up at Paul and his intense glower. “What?” she gasped.
He pointed at her phone with the hand not holding his own sandwich. His expression never changed. “Ash. You know him?”
“Oh, yeah,” she answered, still recovering from her surprise. “We’re good friends. We traveled together for a few years, through Kanto, Johto, and the Orange Islands.”
He seemed to take a moment to process that, then, after a long moment, nodded toward the phone again. “You have a thing for him or something?”
“What?!” Misty shrieked, blushing, more than a few heads turning their way curiously. “No!” she hissed, a bit quieter. “Why would you think that?!”
Paul shrugged. “I don’t know. You were just sitting there staring at his picture, so I assumed.”
Misty felt her face get impossibly redder. “I—I was looking at the shellos!” she stammered.
Paul stared at her for a long moment, then stuck his hand casually into his pocket. “Whatever,” he said, like he hadn’t just blurted out Misty’s deepest secret to all of her colleagues. “Anyway, I guess I’ll see you around,” he said, walking back to his own seat.
Forrest chuckled the moment he was out of earshot. “Oh man, he clocked you immediately.”
“Shut up, Forrest,” she snapped, grabbing her phone and immediately opening up her conversation with Ash, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she willed her face to cool back down.
~*~
Ash felt his phone vibrate from inside his pocket and grinned. “I wonder what Misty thought of that shellos,” he said to Pikachu with a grin.
Misty: OMG In don’t know who this Paul friend of yours is Ash, but tell Sinnoh to TAKE HIM BACK.
“I guess Misty met Paul today,” he mused with a chuckle.
“Pika…” Pikachu said with a cringe.
“Right?” Ash snorted. “Good luck to both of them.”
Considering that Kanto is basically a snapshot of the 90s and Ash has been proven to do a bunch of other things like use payphones and read analog clocks, it’s not a stretch to assume that he writes in fucking cursive, which could be really funny in SuMo when he probably has to turn in written homework regularly.
“May I have this dance?”
Misty looked up at the hand being outstretched towards her, following it up to the man it was connected to, smiling crookedly and looking devastatingly handsome, and sighed.
“Ash, what are you doing?” She asked him tiredly. His smile didn’t waver.
“Asking you to dance. Isn’t that what these benefit ball things are supposed to be about?”
He wiggled his fingers, and against her better judgement, she took his hand and let him lead her to the dance floor. He wasn’t a good dancer, but they managed to keep a somewhat acceptable beat as they awkwardly swayed and twirled to the classical music.
“Why are you pretending to be a well-mannered adult man?” she asked finally.
Ash snorted. “I am a well-mannered adult man.”
“Oh please,” Misty laughed. “Wasn’t that you trying to burp the alphabet on your mother’s couch three days ago?”
Ash did bark out a sudden, small laugh at that, which he quickly bit back when a few of the other party-goers looked their way in annoyance. “Yeah, and I did it too,” he boasted with a ridiculous and goofy grin.
Misty rolled her eyes but settled into their dance, simply shaking her head.
“You look beautiful tonight,” Ash said quietly after a bit, breaking the comfortable silence they had fallen into.
She stiffened. “Don’t start, Ash,” she said, the edges of her voice sharp in warning.
“I’m not starting anything,” he insisted. “It’s a compliment. I’m not allowed to compliment you?”
“Not when you’re only doing it to soften me up so we’ll talk about the other night.”
He frowned, a familiar look of irritation creeping over his face. “Well, we gotta talk about it at some point.”
“Do we?” she asked, meeting his gaze with her own. “I already told you, it—”
“It was stupid,” he quoted teasingly, raising an eyebrow. “We were just caught up in the moment? It was a one time thing? It meant nothing?”
She clenched her jaw, not enjoying hearing her own empty lies mockingly repeated back at her.
Of course it hadn’t meant nothing, it had meant everything. But it had been so sudden, so impulsive and born from passion and lust, it had happened before she could think rationally, to think about everything she was throwing away, everything she had kept hidden for fifteen years.
They hadn’t exactly talked much afterwards either, obviously, so she had no idea what Ash had thought of it all, and at that point, she had made up her mind that it was probably best not to know.
She couldn’t lose something she never had in the first place, afterall.
“Yup,” she answered simply, challenging him to argue. “A dumb, reckless, one time thing.”
“Never to happen again,” he agreed.
“What were we even thinking?” she answered with a chuckle.
“Exactly.” Ash nodded, looking over her shoulder rather than meeting her eyes as he leaned forward and whispered in her ear, “So…I’ll see you tonight, then?”
Her heart skipped a beat, her inhibitions evaporating in an instant as a blush bloomed across her cheeks.
She blinked up at him in surprise, but as soon as she saw the look in his eyes, she bit back a grin and squeezed his hand once in confirmation. “My room or yours?”
He grinned roguishly and her twirled her into a spin.

It’s early enough in the morning that the air is still cool, and Misty wraps the knitted blanket she nabbed from the back of the Ketchum’s couch around herself just a bit tighter as she watches Ash train from her spot on the porch.
He’s instructing his dracovish to do… something… She’s not exactly sure what. Whatever it is, it involves Ash throwing himself around like an idiot, and even Dracovish looks concerned by the whole display.
“So, that’s what you’re into, huh?” Brock asks from behind her, the smirk obvious in his voice.
Misty groans to herself. “Please don’t start,” she grumbles, but Brock saunters up and rests against her chair to observe Ash’s antics himself.
She always kind of figured he knew how she felt about Ash, but was too respectful of her secret to say anything. Unfortunately, after being trapped next to him alone on a plane for hours on the way to Alola a while back, he decided he was done being nice and managed to badger it out of her.
He’s been insufferable about it since.
“I’m just saying,” he continues, “I just think it’s interesting that Misty, the internationally known beauty, the Tomboyish Mermaid, one of the four Sensational Sisters of Cerulean City, is down bad for that.”
He punctuates the sentence by gesturing to Ash and Dracovish, who at that exact moment, water guns Ash in the face and knocks him face first into the dirt. He looks a little shell shocked for a moment, before his face splits into a grin and he laughs jovially, hopping up and hugging Dracovish, who bits his head affectionately.
“That also happens to be a champion and world monarch,” she reminds him dryly.
“Fair,” Brock admits. “So, is that why you like him so much?” he asks, knowing damn well it isn’t, but delighting in hearing her say it.
Ash says something to Dracovish, who nods excitedly and stands up tall, determinedly. Ash beams an copies the pose, his eyes sparkling in the sunlight.
“Nah” she admits, her heart fluttering at the sight. Sometimes it’s worth it not to rise to the bait. She smirks. “But it certainly doesn’t hurt.”
