For this project, I followed the renewable energy brief set by Regen SW. I collaborated with Hannah Petherbridge, who is fashion student. We covered the 3D aspect of this project using the jewellery she hand-made using wood. Â This photoshoot focuses on the jewellery she made, including 3 rings and a head-band made out of a string, a safety pin, and a conker.
Collaborating with another person meant that during the process of this project our idea changed several times, from a sea pollution focused dress made out of plastic-free materials to suede flair trousers to promote the importance of soil- in our different courses we were constantly being inspired by different things, so it was great when we got to work together and brainstorm. The idea of suede trousers changed at the last minute to jewellery as we realised what would be cost and time effective- Hannah also had to make proto-types and attempting to make two pairs of successful trousers in a week wasnât wise. We also thought that by changing our idea from soil to deforestation, we could be more creative with the product and our ideas flowed easier with a slightly less specific focus. Â The idea of brown trousers to suit brown soil changed to beautiful jewellery using trees to promote awareness of deforestation and how often it is used in society- what great demand there is and how unsustainable that is.
The ideas this photoshoot focused around was being at one with nature, as oppose to fighting against it and using it excessively.  As a race, we need to start working together with nature, recognising its needs and becoming equal with Mother Nature.  It is Islamic belief that you look after earth and it will look after you. This is also a Hindu quote; âFor, so sustained by sacrifice, the gods will give you the food of your desire. Whoso enjoys their gift, yet gives nothing, is a thief, no more nor less.â-Bhagavad Gita 3:12. Hinduism teaches that a natural balance needs to be maintained so not to be selfish, and that resourcesâ becoming scarce is a product of karma.
This was my first attempt at a fashion shoot, Iâm used to taking portraiture but always focusing on the person and not an object attached to them.  I think the shoot was successful, Iâm content with the photographs and they focus on our 3D creations as well as the existence and the relationship we should have with nature. Hannah was completely comfortable as my model and I could direct her in the photos, positioning her occasionally and using my hand in the air to guide her eyes/head position. My inspiration for and during the shoot was purely our surroundings. I looked around and certain areas, trees and flowers grabbed my attention and got my ideas flowing. Our shoot plans and storyboards had been ready for completely different objects and themes, so this shoot depended on spontaneity and improvisation. Â
The Regen SW brief required us to create a 2D piece of artwork that explores an aspect of sustainable energy. Trees create renewable and sustainable energy- sustainable as long as we use it in a responsible way. The rings Hannahâs made has been of recycled, completely natural materials, and promotes awareness of the many ways in which we use wood, how incredibly unsustainable this is and how re-using materials is the way forward. Trees are a massively important aspect of renewable energy, and without using it properly its whole existence may eventually cease. The photos encourage an audience to use natural sources properly and not abuse them. The photos will be submitted in 2D to meet the 2D problem solving unit, and the creations are 3D to meet the 3D problem solving unit.
