So, I'm starting a project where I draw chibis of K-pop idols I like. First of the series: Exo. It's unfortunate what's happening to the group right now, because I think Exo might just be the complete and perfected package of K-pop boyband goodness SM can offer (so far). Not only talented and beautiful, getting into the fandom is very entertaining. Why? They have superpowers...! What more can a nerd ask for. SM has had presented many experimental concepts through their idol groups in the past, going back as old as HOT or DBSK's "warriors from the future" fashion concept and performances. SHINEE was the only exception of SM boyband that didn't take the "space warrior concept" tradition (wait.. what was it during Lucifer?). As funny as it seems, I think Exo's behind story on their superpowers is very interesting and well executed into performances and into products. If you wanna know what I'm talking about, check out the videos from their concert, The Lost Planet. Next in the series is SHINee, my favorite SM boyband :D
Printed, laminated, and cut Steven Universe chibis. They are bookmarks, believe it or not. The most difficult part of the process is tying little ribbons on. This is it. This is how I go blind. Goodbye, eyesight...!
I’m so in love with this series!
This is an old one. Drew it probably back in 2008 or 2009? Found it while going through the old art folder to set up a Storenvy with ekllips
Beast sandwich! I love these guys >_< And their super original logo, which came from the Korean spelling of the group’s name: 비스트. It’s so fun seeing their Instagram update these days :D
Sailor senshi charms I made with Ekllips. Can you tell the differnce in styles? They're supposed to be audio jack plugs/cellphone charms, but I've put them up on a corkboard above my desk because they're so precious to me...
How Are You Feeling Today - ATLA version is so old I don't remember when I drew it. I remember I was a Junior in college and I completed the piece in Ekllips's apartment while we drank Monster energy drink to stay up all night. We no longer drink that shit.
And the Korra version was done last Friday. Only after I finished it I realized it was supposed to be 5 x 6, not 5 x 5 :p Oops. I can't believe I only sold one of these at AOD.
Some old watercolor paintings I didn't upload on Tumblr yet for some reason. The picture quality is crappy since these are taken from my cellphone under the yellow light, while the paintings are under plastic covers of my portfolio, and while my hand shook like an old lady I am.
Almost a year ago, I started drawing a webcomic series for Kiyat Games. These are the initial character designs which gradually changed as the series went on. I had to stop drawing the comic at its 10th episode when I got a full-time job, but it's been a fun experience.
You can read Welcome to the Kiyat Games from Tapastic. They just got a new artist to continue the series! :D
Episode 2
I'm actually quite embarrassed how childishly silly this series is (again, in my defense, I was young when I drew these). I'm just gonna link the rest of the episodes so my Tumblr followers don't unfollow me for spamming their dashboard ;p
(Click link to see more) ep 3, ep 4, ep 5, ep 6, ep 7, ep 8, ep 9
I used to draw cartoon strips titled Mongo Story since high school. The very first ones I drew are in Korean, and from its season 2 (yes, I called it season 2…) I started uploading them on my DeviantArt account and edited dialogues in English on Photoshop. This is even before I had my first tablet! Ironically, I stopped drawing them after buying a tablet and took them off of DeviantArt.
I thought I lost the cartoon files when my old PC crashed (I have a Mac ever since). But then I found them stored in old external harddrive! Yes!
These are from 2004-2005. Almost a decade old! If anyone wonders, my nickname Sukyan comes from the character of this cartoon series. ‘-Yang’ is honorific suffix in Korean for girls. My friends have been calling me ‘Sukie’ ever since middle school. So if you say ‘Sukie-yang’ fast enough, it becomes ‘Sukyan’. The other 3 main (colorful!) characters you see in Mongo Story are my high school friends.
And lastly, the title ‘Mongo Story’ (it’s really hard for me to admit this) comes from the high school I attended: Montgomery High School.
Yeaaahh… get a good laugh. I was 17 when I titled this series!
So here goes, everyone. I sincerely hope the silly-ness of it cracks you up as much as it did for 2013 me.
1st Episode, maybe?
So, hopefully no one did Call Me Maybe/You have 7 days joke.
Ekllips and I always wanted to start our own comic strip. Maybe this could be the first of many episodes?
Suki is one of my favorite characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not only because we have the same name- but because she rocks the Kiyoshi warrior makeup!!! (which would look like clown makeup if others do it)
So I'm about three years too late on drawing Suki fanart.. but oh well, better late than never.
I was so excited to have a print that's not chibi, but this print only sold three, hahaha.
The Fire Ferrets trio from Avatar: The Legend of Korra. I was able to print them out on shrinky dink films successfully, in 50~83% opacity. The first picture is right after the initial bake of inkjet-printed shrink dink films; they look near perfect. I was super excited to put them out for sale at Fanime 2012. The very last step was to coat them with glaze and bake once more; but the printer ink had very bad reaction to the glaze.... as can be seen on the second picture TT___TT Apparently, ink printed on shrinky dink film starts to melt and bubble when the powder glaze starts to melt on top of it. So, I ended up only having a handful of chibis that looked good enough to be sold. =(
Now, one might think that I learned my lesson and will make better shrinky dink chibis next time. Well, no. I don't think I'll ever make shrinky dink chibis for sale anymore. They require too much time and effort than how much profit I can make out of them. It was fun though =]
Test print on shrinky dink film: I printed the original out with 50% opacity, and it turns out 50% is too light. When the film shrinks down to one third its size, color also is supposed to get that much darker. But I guess... next time I should try printing them out in 70% opacity instead =(
There is a penny to compare sizes =] I wanted to put a quarter, but I didn't have one... Unfortunately I had less than 25 cents cash in my wallet.
