I can't believe I left off at the Blue Mountains!
My experience had barely started at that point, but I'll try and write it all down in pieces, mostly for my memories sake. So an Australian friend, Jared, let us stay at his place in The Blue Mountains and showed us around.
After the Blue Mountains, we were invited later to go to The Snowy Mountains by our friend Pat. He's legendary. Anyways, we go there and he has the coolest house and the coolest doodle looking dog named Milou. We spent the weekend hanging out, eating weenies of sandwich bread and hiking the actual snowy mountains. It was about 10k's to the blue lake. It was amazing.
After this trip Kat, Caroline, Kasey and I began our spring break endeavors. We began our trip by going to Young to spend Easter with our friends and their families. Josh let us stay at his house and his whole family took us in and treated us as if we were their extra kids. They even got us all candy. Cadbury! Anyways, Our friends Josh and Sarah took us to these falls in Young, NSW and showed us all around. It was amazing. I got stuck on the side of a cliff. Anyways this trip was the one where I realized one of my friends was totally not crushing on me and was in fact driving in the lane, if you know what I mean. But I let him continue to pretend he liked me. It all came out later, and my goodness am I so happy for him. ANYWAYS. After our stay in Young Joshy drove us to the train station at around 4 in the morning. (Oh also his dad totally walked in on Kat in the shower, LOL) We went to Sydney and a girl that K,K and C met at surf camp met us at the Red Fern station and let us stay in her tiny, rather disgusting apartment. It was nasty. And four of us crammed into one double bed and managed to sleep while Kat cuddled me and Carolyn tried to punch me. It was lovely. We basically just explored Sydney and tried to find cheap places to eat.
The day came that we went to Fiji! FIJI. How cool is that? Super cool. It was amazing. We flew into Nadie, and stayed at a nasty hostel that smelled like pee. We met a funny South African (?) sky dive instructor though. He was about 7 foot tall and almost albino he was so fare. He told us about a really hot customer that had strapped onto him and she farted and he wanted to just push her out of the plane. He also greeted Carolyn by saying she looked like his next ex girlfriend. This guy was quite a card. The next day we hopped on a boat that took us to MantaRay Island. It was a three hour boat ride with stops at all the islands for little dinghies to come transfer the visitors. One boat full of Germans flipped. It was pretty sad to see their soaked cameras get dove for. Finally we made it to our island.
That boat ride was my turning point of coming out of my shell though, I asked them to turn on the wifi so I could tell my parents where I was and that I was fine. I also ended up texting my Aussie love interest, which was quite cute.
Fiji was amazing. We played this weird circle game where one person holds the other and you push a rock as far as you can without touching the ground inside of a circle..If that makes sense. So I met a Danish guy and he decided the way to win was to stand on my foot. Which would have worked if a seven foot tall lady didn't join last second. He also left permanent bruises on my foot. That's a thing. Permanent bruising. Anyways. I ended up catching a cold and going to bed early most other nights. But I did snorkel the reefs. The current in these waters was so strong that Michael Phelps would have stayed in the same place paddling. It was amazing. I also snorkeled with manta rays! One got so close to me that I could have touched it. I also did a tube sunset cruise which was a creepy dude taking all the hostel guests to a little cove area with a bunch of crappy floats and tossing us a beer or two we bought from the island. It was cloudy and cold.
Oh and the hostel! It was so cool and wooden and open. It was the only thing on the island. and each bunk had a nice little mosquito net. Quite cute if you ask me. We made a bunch of friends, and went on a village tour. There was about 200 people living in a village and island or two away from ours and that's where most of the hostel staff was from. I met people from Fiji, London, Denmark, and Norway!
Upon getting back to Wollongong we had many more adventures and I will go into detail eventually.
What's up blog world?!?
So obviously I've been back from Australia for a while, and clearly quit blogging. But! those non-blog days are over for this current span of time because I'm going to start logging some thoughts going through my now worldly-expereienced head.
Here's bullet points of my life to catch you up:
Left for home June 27, 2014, after almost missing my flight.
Arrived in Minnesota.
Came home to my bff/future roomie and then kind of boyfriend.
Got back with said boyfriend due to fears of being alone in this now forgien world of Minnesota and worked all summer.
Culture shock still very evident.
Moved to Minneapolis for my last year of school.
Got an internship at an advertising agency, and catered on the side.
Broke up with lame boyfriend.
Found a new one a day later because he was always at my apartment anyway. It was convenient..
Finished the semester, and had Christmas with my family back home.
Moved back down town and started my last semester as an undergrad, and turned out I only need 6 credits to graduate in May!
Became a member of the Love Your Melon Campus Crew at the U.
Got a Campus rep job working for bobble.
Broke things off with that new guy just in time for valentines day.
AND!
All along I've been working out and slowly building up my fitness levels again. Which feels great. So now my blog is destined to turn into a motivational area for healthy lifestyles all around.
The Blue Mountains
A couple of friends decided to take about 30 international students back to their home town of The Blue Mountains and show us around! It was absolutely beautiful! The mountains and caves were majestic, along with the waterfalls and cliff jump spots. This is a picture I took from a place called Flat Rock. I don't know if I've ever seen a spot more enchanting.
Wollongong Update
Sorry I haven't updated in a while! I've been so busy with uni (classes) and trying to be social! Me, social, i know it's crazy. I haven't done much worth blogging about lately, no travels, or shopping, just enjoying the city I'm living in. Wollongong is beautiful, and the people are so friendly. I've met so many people that I hope I can see again one day after I leave. The funniest thing about my encounters with people here is the only reason that anyone knows where I'm from in the states is because they watch How I Met Your Mother and remember that the character Marshall Erikson is from St. Cloud, Minnesota. I love that. I think that's enough reason to convince my new friends to come visit me when I get back. We'll see.
I'm hoping that this experience is going to really make me come out of my shell, but I'm starting to get homesick again. It's like a roller coaster of awesome to kind of down days and back to awesome. I miss my family and friends, and my boyfriend. It's so hard to stay in touch, but I know everyone understands with the 17 hour time difference and all.
So, Uni! My classes are all going pretty well. My favorite class is easily photography. I love working in a darkroom again, and I think my professor adores me. The photo lingo they use here is so different from the lingo I was taught on. I told my professor this and he changed the rubric of the next assignment to a photo word I had used instead of his, and as he read the instructions out to the class he made sure to announce that he added the word "combinations" just for me.
I have one rather abstract class that is becoming increasingly difficult for me to understand the point of. I met with the professor for clarification, but it turns out he's kind of abstract as well. BUT, he adores me now too. I ran into him on campus and he shouted my name across the student area and as I'm expecting to hear that I did a project so terribly wrong that I should just drop out, he starts laughing. He told me that he had been listening to student seminars all day and the students were saying all the wrong things about America, but he felt he couldn't correct them so I should. Honestly, I wasn't sure how to respond other than to laugh and tell him I'd get on it as soon as I could.
Look at me, making friends with peers AND professors. Even though I'm homesick and I can't wait to get back into all the arms I love being in, I know this experience is going to make me who I will be for the rest of my life and I'm so thankful for it.
Since I mentioned making really awesome friends here, attached is a photo of me and my favorite Aussie of all time that I will make sure visits me in Minnesota. Especially because he looks just like Ted Mosby, Marshall Erikson's best friend on How I Met Your Mother, so it only makes sense.
The Opera House is unbelievably gorgeous! I'm falling in love with Sydney.
Today I went to the Future Music Festival in Sydney, Australia with some of my amazing friends. We caught a train at 8:46 this morning, and arrived in Sydney in about two hours. We then walked to a friend's, roommate's, mom's house! She let us rent a bed for 10 bucks each! Which is amazing considering the fact that every hotel and hostel in the city are booked out or in the hundreds per person. I feel like a real back packer. :) anyways! The concert was amazing! My favorite acts were Pharrell Williams, Dead Mau5, Phoenix, Hardwell and OF COURSE MACKLEMORE!! I may have teared up a little when he introduced Same Love. It was a great day! Now tomorrow will be spent exploring Sydney! I'm FINALLY going to make it to the opera house! Cheers!
