things that make me feel old (wip):
- we don’t call everything discourse casually (my college group chat was legit named “the Discourse™️” lmaoo
- it’s -core now instead of aesthetic
- growing up in the obama hope era. we had our first black president and women were breaking the glass ceiling and multiple states legalized gay marriage (and weed haha). things weren’t perfect by any means but i think everyone can agree they were better times (even bush was a better time jfc). all that to say that i was always under the impression that once we’ve won that level of right, that it wouldn’t possibly be taken away. the idea of repealing roe v wade would’ve been incomprehensible. i can barely comprehend it now.
- “this all used to be trees/fields when i was growing up”
- “it never used to get this hot growing up (20 years ago)”/any weather talk
- people my age having kids and getting married and that’s a perfectly normal age. in fact, it’s the average age”
- “last time i saw you, you were so little.” it’s true!
- no one talks about the whole british “keep calm and carry on” stuff
- no one talks about hipsters!!!!
- pre-censorship google 🥴 i don’t think the idea occurred to them to censor things and adults were all boomers+ so they had no clue.
- pre-censorship tumblr. i see kids on tiktok be like “oh it’s worse now!” baby, you don’t Get it. the algorithm wasn’t bad. it Did Not exist! there wasn’t any need for coded language. like if i wanted eating disorder content, i just directly searched anorexia diet, purging 101, thinspo, etc. people used to post videos teaching people how to shoot up. straight up cutting pictures. tumblr didn’t censor text at all and i don’t think they do that now. literally half my posts are me being suicidal haha
- pre-chat snapchat. my entire “friendship” with my rapist was through snapchat but had to take pics and put text on them and send 20 billion parts. (did we go to the same school? yes. was i his therapist? yes. did he acknowledge/hang out with me in person? no
- sometimes i slip up and say skype instead of facetime or zoom haha
- “that’s new. they didn’t build it until right after i left for college” baby, they’re celebrating their 10th anniversary.
- mall nostalgia #rip. forever 21 was era defining
- a restaurant that makes me nostalgic for my childhood closed. i remember being seated in the non-smoking section…
